दास तो वे हैं जो विनम्र रहते हैं और सदा कृष्ण के आदेश के वश में रहते हैं।
The verse defines the dāsa class of devotees, the ālambana (support) of prīti-bhakti-rasa (dāsya, the mood of servitude); the lead-in reads atha dāsāḥ, 'now, the servants.'
यह श्लोक भक्तों के दास-वर्ग का लक्षण करता है — जो प्रीति-भक्ति-रस अर्थात् दास्य (सेवा के भाव) के आलम्बन (आश्रय) हैं; आरम्भिक वाक्य 'अथ दासाः' अर्थात् 'अब दास' है।

nideśe sva-sva-yogya-karmaṇi"in nideśa" means: in the task suited to each one pratīka nideśe + gloss; locative; sva-sva = each his own'निदेश' अर्थात् अपने-अपने योग्य कर्म में (सप्तमी)
yā śrī-kṛṣṇasya ājñānamely, whatever is Śrī Kṛṣṇa's order [regarding that task]जो श्रीकृष्ण की आज्ञा है
tasya yaḥ vaśaḥ icchāof that order, the vaśa — that is, the wish behind it Jīva glosses vaśa (in the compound) as icchā, 'wish/will,' not 'control'उसका जो 'वश' है, वह इच्छा है — (जीव 'वश' का अर्थ इच्छा लेते हैं, नियन्त्रण नहीं)
svataḥ eva ruciḥa spontaneous liking, arising of its own accord svataḥ eva = of itself; ruci restates icchā — the servant's own eager relishअपने-आप ही (उठनेवाली) रुचि — यह 'इच्छा' को ही दुहराती है, अर्थात् दास की अपनी उत्कट रुचि
tatra vartituṁ śīghraṁ yeṣāṁ tethose who are quick to act on it — they [are the vartiṇaḥ] unpacks the -vartiṇaḥ of the bahuvrīhi; śīghram = quicklyउसमें प्रवृत्त होने की शीघ्रता जिनमें है, वे — यह बहुव्रीहि के '-वर्तिणः' को खोलता है
nideśe sva-sva-yogya-karmaṇi — in each one's own fitting task; yā śrī-kṛṣṇasya ājñā — which is Kṛṣṇa's order; tasya yaḥ vaśaḥ icchā svataḥ eva ruciḥ — the vaśa of that order, i.e. the wish, a spontaneous liking; tatra vartituṁ śīghraṁ yeṣāṁ te — those quick to act on it
nideśe sva-sva-yogya-karmaṇi — निदेश अर्थात् अपने योग्य कर्म में; yā śrī-kṛṣṇasya ājñā — जो श्रीकृष्ण की आज्ञा; tasya yaḥ vaśaḥ icchā — उसका जो वश, वह इच्छा; svataḥ eva ruciḥ — अपने-आप ही रुचि; tatra vartituṁ śīghraṁ yeṣāṁ te — उसमें शीघ्र प्रवृत्त होनेवाले वे
"Under the sway of his command": nideśa is Kṛṣṇa's order about the task fitted to each servant. And vaśa here Jīva reads not as "control" but as the wish behind that order — which the servant takes up as his own spontaneous liking. So the dāsas are those quick to act on Kṛṣṇa's wish.
'निदेश' का अर्थ है अपना-अपना योग्य कर्म। उसमें जो श्रीकृष्ण की आज्ञा है, उसका 'वश' अर्थात् इच्छा। वह इच्छा अपने-आप ही (दास की) रुचि बन जाती है। उसी में शीघ्र प्रवृत्त होने का स्वभाव जिनमें है, वे ही दास हैं।
Jīva turns the compound nideśa-vaśa-vartiṇaḥ away from the flat sense "acting under the control of his command": he glosses vaśa as icchā/ruci — the master's wish, which the servant makes his own eager delight. The next two sentences supply lexical proof for reading vaśa as "wish."
जीव 'निदेश-वश-वर्तिणः' को उस सपाट अर्थ से हटा देते हैं जो 'आज्ञा के नियन्त्रण में काम करना' बताता है; वे 'वश' का अर्थ इच्छा/रुचि करते हैं — स्वामी की इच्छा, जिसे दास अपनी उत्कट प्रसन्नता बना लेता है। आगे के दो वाक्य 'वश' को 'इच्छा' पढ़ने का शाब्दिक प्रमाण देते हैं।

vaśaḥ kāntau iti amaraḥ"vaśa is [listed] in the sense of wish/will (kānti)" — so says the Amara-kośa quote; kānti here = wish/desire, licensing vaśa = icchā'वश शब्द कान्ति (इच्छा) अर्थ में' — ऐसा अमरकोश कहता है
tathā hi — for so; vaśaḥ kāntau iti amaraḥ — the Amara-kośa: "vaśa in the sense of kānti (wish)"
tathā hi — जैसा कि; vaśaḥ kāntau iti amaraḥ — 'वश कान्ति अर्थ में' ऐसा अमरकोश
And the lexicon backs this: the Amara-kośa records vaśa in the meaning of kānti — "wish, will." So reading vaśa as "his wish" is proper.
जैसा कि अमरकोश में कहा है — 'वश' शब्द 'कान्ति' अर्थात् इच्छा के अर्थ में आता है।
Why cited: Cites the Amara-kośa to prove that vaśa can mean "wish/will" (kānti), licensing Jīva's gloss vaśa = icchā/ruci in the previous sentence.
क्यों उद्धृत: अमरकोश को इसलिए उद्धृत करते हैं कि 'वश' का अर्थ इच्छा/अभिलाषा (कान्ति) हो सकता है — इससे पूर्व वाक्य में जीव का 'वश = इच्छा/रुचि' वाला अर्थ सिद्ध होता है।

tad etat-lakṣaṇa-anusārātso, in keeping with this definition ablative of ground; etat-lakṣaṇa = the definition just givenउस अभी दिये गये लक्षण के अनुसार होने के कारण (पञ्चमी)
rūḍhi-vṛttyā dāsatvena āśabdyamānāḥthose called "dāsa" by the word's conventional sense rūḍhi-vṛtti = the settled conventional meaning; āśabdyamānāḥ = denoted by the wordरूढि-वृत्ति (प्रसिद्ध रूढ अर्थ) से जो 'दास' शब्द से कहे जाते हैं
śrī-kṛṣṇa-gaurava-viṣayāḥ viprādayaḥ apieven the brāhmaṇas and the like, who are objects of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's own reverence api = even; viprādi = brāhmaṇas etc., those Kṛṣṇa himself honorsश्रीकृष्ण के आदर के पात्र ब्राह्मण आदि भी
yoga-vṛttyā gaṇayiṣyantewill [also] be counted [as dāsas] by the word's etymological sense yoga-vṛtti = the derivative/etymological sense, opposed to rūḍhiयोग-वृत्ति (व्युत्पत्ति-मूलक अर्थ, जो रूढि से भिन्न है) से (दासों में) गिने जायेंगे
dāsyate dīyate kṛpayā tat-tad-vāñchitaṁ sampādyate yebhyaḥ iti nirukteḥbecause of the etymology: "dāsyate means 'is given' — [dāsas are] those to whom the various wished-for things are bestowed out of grace" ablative nirukteḥ = 'on the strength of the etymology'; derives dāsa from the root meaning 'give''जिनको कृपा से वह-वह वाञ्छित दिया जाता है, सम्पादित किया जाता है' — इस निरुक्ति (व्युत्पत्ति) के बल पर (पञ्चमी)
tad etat-lakṣaṇa-anusārāt — following this definition; rūḍhi-vṛttyā dāsatvena āśabdyamānāḥ — [beyond] those conventionally called "dāsa"; śrī-kṛṣṇa-gaurava-viṣayāḥ viprādayaḥ api — even brāhmaṇas and others whom Kṛṣṇa reveres; yoga-vṛttyā gaṇayiṣyante — will be counted by the etymological sense; dāsyate ... yebhyaḥ iti nirukteḥ — because of the etymology "dāsyate = is given..."
So, following this definition: by ordinary usage "dāsa" names those we plainly call servants. But by the etymological sense the count widens. Even the brāhmaṇas and others — whom Kṛṣṇa himself treats with reverence — will be reckoned as dāsas. This rests on the etymology: dāsyate means "is given"; a dāsa is one to whom the various desired things are bestowed out of grace.
Two ways to fix a word's meaning: rūḍhi-vṛtti, the fixed conventional sense (as "paṅkaja" just means "lotus"), and yoga-vṛtti, the sense built up from the root (as "paṅkaja" = "mud-born"). Here the ordinary sense of dāsa catches only obvious servants; the root-sense (√dās, 'to give') stretches the word to include even honored brāhmaṇas, who receive Kṛṣṇa's gracious giving. Jīva grounds the root-sense in the next two citations.

dāsṛ dāne |
dāsṛthe verbal root dāsṛ (dās) cited as it stands in the grammarians' root-list (dhātu-pāṭha)'दासृ' (धातुपाठ में जैसा उद्धृत है वैसा ही धातु)
dāne[is taught] in the sense of "giving" locative naming the root's meaning-slot: dāna, giving'दान' (देना) अर्थ में — यह सप्तमी धातु का अर्थ-स्थान बताती है
dāsṛ — the root dās; dāne — in the sense of giving
dāsṛ — धातु 'दासृ'; dāne — 'दान' (देना) अर्थ में
The root itself: dāsṛ is listed as meaning "to give." So dāsa can properly be derived from "giving."
'दासृ' धातु 'दान' अर्थात् देने के अर्थ में है।
Why cited: Cites the grammarians' root-list — √dās = "to give" (dāne) — to ground the etymology of s4 that derives dāsa from "giving."
क्यों उद्धृत: वैयाकरणों के धातुपाठ को इसलिए उद्धृत करते हैं — 'दास्' धातु 'देना' (दान) अर्थ में — ताकि पिछले वाक्य की वह व्युत्पत्ति सिद्ध हो जो 'दास' को 'देने' से निकालती है।

And the Bhāṣā-vṛtti is cited on this very point, with the phrase "the brāhmaṇa is the dāsa of the virtuous" — showing the word dāsa applied even to a brāhmaṇa.
और इसी में भाषा-वृत्ति में यह प्रमाण दिया गया है — 'गुणवानों का ब्राह्मण दास होता है।'
Why cited: Adduced from the Bhāṣā-vṛtti as grammatical authority that "dāsa" attaches even to a brāhmaṇa (an honored one), confirming the yoga-vṛtti extension of the word in s4.
क्यों उद्धृत: भाषा-वृत्ति से यह व्याकरण-प्रमाण लाते हैं कि 'दास' शब्द ब्राह्मण (एक आदरणीय व्यक्ति) पर भी लगता है — इससे चौथे वाक्य का योग-वृत्ति द्वारा शब्द का विस्तार पुष्ट होता है।
