śamasya nirvikāratvān nāṭyajñair naiṣa manyate |
śamasyaof śama, the settled stillness of the mind genitive — whose quality the next word statesशम का — जिसके स्वभाव की बात आगे कही जा रही है
nirvikāratvātbecause it undergoes no change of feeling ablative of reason — this is the objectors' whole ground; vikāra = the stirring, swelling movement a rasa is supposed to haveक्योंकि वह निर्विकार है — उसमें विकार, अर्थात् वह उभार और हलचल नहीं होती जो रस में होनी चाहिए
nāṭya-jñaiḥby the men who know nāṭya, the science of drama instrumental of agent with the passive manyateनाट्यशास्त्र के ज्ञाताओं के द्वारा
na eṣaḥ manyatethis one is not accepted [as a rasa]यह (शान्त) रस नहीं माना जाता
śamasya — of śama; nirvikāratvāt — because it undergoes no change of feeling; nāṭya-jñaiḥ — by the experts in drama; na eṣaḥ manyate — this one is not accepted
The drama experts do not accept śānta as a rasa. Their reason: śama is stillness, and stillness does not change. A rasa is supposed to swell and stir; śama by definition does not.
The objection is the standard one from the Sanskrit dramaturgists: a sthāyi-bhāva must be capable of vikāra — visible modification under vibhāvas and anubhāvas — and śama, being cessation of movement, looks disqualified.

śāntyākhyāyā rater atra svīkārān na virudhyate ||
śānti-ākhyāyāḥof the one that goes by the name śānti genitive agreeing with rateḥ; ākhyā = 'called, named' — the name matters, because what is accepted is a rati, not bare śamaजिसका नाम 'शान्ति' है, ऐसी — यह विशेषण आगे की रति का है; नाम पर ही बल है, क्योंकि यहाँ केवल शम नहीं, रति स्वीकार की जाती है
rateḥof rati — love, the settled affection for the Lord genitive governed by svīkārāt, 'because of the accepting of it'उस रति का — 'स्वीकार' के साथ सम्बन्ध में
atrahere — in this system of oursयहाँ, अर्थात् इस शान्त रस में
svīkārātbecause it is what we accept [as the sthāyi] ablative of reason, answering the ablative nirvikāratvāt of line 1 point for pointक्योंकि उसका स्वीकार किया गया है — यही उत्तर उनके 'निर्विकारत्वात्' के ठीक सामने रखा गया है
na virudhyatethere is no contradictionइसलिए कोई विरोध नहीं आता
atra — here, in our system; śānti-ākhyāyāḥ rateḥ — of the rati that goes by the name śānti; svīkārāt — because that is what is accepted; na virudhyate — there is no contradiction
But here what we accept is not bare śama. It is a rati — love for the Lord — that carries the name śānti. Since love is what stands as the sthāyi, the objection does not touch us. Nothing contradicts.

And Bhagavān himself defines the word: 'śama is the mind's being fixed on Me.' Not stillness in the abstract — stillness set on Him.
Why cited: cited to fix the meaning of śama itself: the Lord's own definition makes śama relational — fixity on Him — which is exactly what lets a rati stand behind it.

tan-niṣṭhā durghaṭā buddher etāṁ śānta-ratiṁ vinā ||
tat-niṣṭhāthat standing firm on Himउनमें (भगवान् में) वह ठहराव

buddheḥfor the mind genitive — whose fixity is at stakeबुद्धि का — किसका ठहराव, यह बताने वाला सम्बन्ध
etām śānta-ratim vināwithout this śānta-rati vinā takes the accusative; etām points back to the śānti-named rati of line
buddheḥ tat-niṣṭhā — the mind's being fixed on Him; etām śānta-ratim vinā — without this śānta-rati; durghaṭā — is hard to bring about
Now finish the reasoning. The mind cannot settle on Him without love for Him. So if Bhagavān calls śama a fixing of the mind on Himself, then a rati is already inside his definition. Śānta-rati is what makes that fixity possible.

Jīva explains the single word 'here'. Let them attack a śānta-rasa taken bare, with nothing but stillness in it — fine, he grants that. But 'here' means: in our view. And the śānta-rasa we hold has a rati inside it. Against that one, their objection has no purchase.
'kevala' is load-bearing: the target of the dramaturgists is śama with nothing behind it. Jīva concedes their case against that and denies that it is the case in front of them.

iti bhāvaḥthat is the thought behind the lineयह भाव है
tatra hetum āha śānty-ā- iti — for that he gives the reason with the words beginning śānty-ā-; hi śrī-bhagavad-rati-mātrasya rasatvam pūrvam eva sthāpitam — for it was already established earlier that rati toward Śrī Bhagavān, just as such, is a rasa; iti bhāvaḥ — that is the import

Now Rūpa gives his reason, in the words beginning śānty-ā-. Jīva supplies the thought behind it: we established long ago that rati for Bhagavān — any rati for him, simply as rati for him — is a rasa. So once a rati named śānti is on the table, its rasa-hood is not a fresh claim at all. It follows from what was already proved.

kārya-dvārāby way of the effect instrumental of means — dvārā, 'through the door of'; the effect named is the mind's fixityकार्य के द्वार से, कार्य के माध्यम से — यहाँ कार्य है बुद्धि का ठहर जाना
rati-rūpam kāraṇamthe cause, which is rati itselfरति रूप कारण
lakṣyateis pointed to indirectly lakṣaṇā, not direct statement — the verse names the effect and lets you infer the causeलक्षणा से जनाया जाता है — सीधे कहा नहीं गया; श्लोक कार्य कहता है और कारण का अनुमान छोड़ देता है
tan-niṣṭhā itithe line beginning tan-niṣṭhā pratīka for the fourth line'तन्निष्ठा' इत्यादि — यह चौथी पंक्ति के लिए है
tatra hi — for in that [utterance of the Lord]; kārya-dvārā — by way of the effect; rati-rūpam kāraṇam lakṣyate — the cause, which is rati, is pointed to indirectly; iti āha tan-niṣṭhā iti — so he says, with the line beginning tan-niṣṭhā
Why does Rūpa add a fourth line? Because the Lord's sentence names only the effect — the mind fixed on Him. The cause is not stated; it is pointed at through the effect. And the cause is rati. So Rūpa spells that out in tan-niṣṭhā durghaṭā: the fixity cannot happen without the love that produces it.
The move is a standard one: you name a kārya and let the reader infer the kāraṇa. Like saying 'the river is in flood' to indicate that it rained upstream — the rain is never mentioned.

One gap remains. The Lord's words yield only rati in general — love for Him, unspecified. They do not by themselves say śānta-rati. So how do we land on the particular one? Jīva answers: because in this case śama in its ordinary well-known sense is present so abundantly. That abundance is what settles the reference on śānta-rati and nothing else.
