kṣetre kuroḥ kim api caṇḍakaroparāge
kṣetre kuroḥon Kuru's field, at Kurukṣetra locative of place; kuroḥ is a genitive held apart from kṣetre instead of compounded — 'the field of Kuru'कुरु के क्षेत्र में — सप्तमी स्थान बताती है; 'कुरोः' षष्ठी समास में न मिलाकर अलग रखी गई है, इसलिए 'कुरु का क्षेत्र' ऐसा पृथक् सम्बन्ध सुनाई देता है
kim apisomething you cannot put a name to goes ahead to mahaḥ in the next line; kim api here is not a question but 'some indescribable something'कोई अनिर्वचनीय वस्तु — यहाँ प्रश्नवाचक नहीं; आगे की पंक्ति के 'महः' से जुड़कर उसका विशेषण बनता है
caṇḍakara-uparāgewhen the sun with its fierce rays was under eclipse locative of time; caṇḍa-kara 'fierce-rayed' names the sun, uparāga its eclipseजब प्रचण्ड किरणों वाले सूर्य का ग्रहण लगा हुआ था — सप्तमी काल बताती है; 'चण्डकर' अर्थात् तीखी किरणों वाला सूर्य, और 'उपराग' उसका ग्रहण
kuroḥ kṣetre — on Kuru's field; caṇḍakara-uparāge — at the time of the sun's eclipse; kim api — something beyond naming.
The scene is set first. It was at Kurukṣetra. It was during an eclipse of the sun. And what appeared there was something the speaker cannot name.
An udāharaṇa of the pārokṣya kind of śānta — the 'not face to face' half of the twofold division stated at 3.1.38, śānto dvidhaiṣa pārokṣya-sākṣātkāra-vibhedataḥ. The lead-in yathā vā, 'or again, as follows', marks it as a second illustration of that same kind; Viśvanātha closes his comment by naming it parokṣya. A solar eclipse at Kurukṣetra is the traditional occasion for a great pilgrim gathering, which is why the two details are given together.

mahaḥa light, a mass of radiance neuter; this is what kim api of line 1 modifiesतेज, प्रकाशपुञ्ज — नपुंसकलिंग; पहली पंक्ति का 'किम् अपि' इसी का विशेषण है
pathi vilocanayoḥright on the path of my two eyes — straight in my line of sight vilocanayoḥ is a dual genitive with pathi; the eyes have a 'road' and the light came down itदोनों नेत्रों के मार्ग पर — 'विलोचनयोः' द्विवचन षष्ठी 'पथि' से जुड़ती है; मानो आँखों का अपना एक रास्ता हो और वह तेज उसी रास्ते से भीतर उतरा
yadāsītwhen it was there / which was there written as one word and splittable two ways — yadā āsīt 'when it was' or yad āsīt 'which was', answered by tat in line 3. Jīva marks yad āsīt as the wanted reading (s1); both are left standing hereएक ही शब्द में लिखा है, पर पदच्छेद दो प्रकार से हो सकता है — 'यदा आसीत्' अर्थात् 'जब हुआ', अथवा 'यद् आसीत्' अर्थात् 'जो हुआ', जिसका उत्तर तीसरी पंक्ति का 'तत्' देता है।
sāndraṁ mahaḥ — a thick radiance; vilocanayoḥ pathi — on the path of my two eyes; yadā āsīt — when it was there (or: yad āsīt — which was there).
A thick mass of light stood right in the path of his eyes. Read one way: when that light was there. Read the other way: that light which was there — and line 3 picks it up with 'that'.

The cloud's dark sheen is the standard of beauty being outdoneजो मेघ की कान्ति को भी जीत लेने वाला है — 'नीरद' अर्थात् जल देने वाला मेघ; '-जयि' उसी 'तत्' का विशेषण।
smaradas it keeps remembering it smarat, present participle agreeing with manaḥ in line 4 — the mind is the one doing the rememberingस्मरण करता हुआ — 'स्मरत्' वर्तमान कृदन्त, अगली पंक्ति के 'मनः' का विशेषण; स्मरण करने वाला मन ही है
utsukaṁrestless with longing also agreeing with manaḥ; the state the remembering leaves it inउत्कण्ठित, व्याकुल — यह भी 'मनः' का ही विशेषण; स्मरण उसे इसी दशा में छोड़ जाता है
memy genitive going with manaḥ in the next lineमेरा — षष्ठी, अगली पंक्ति के 'मनः' से जुड़ती है
me manaḥ — my mind; tat nīrada-dyuti-jayi — that light which outshines a rain-cloud's glow; smarat — remembering it; utsukaṁ — restless with longing.
That light outshone the sheen of a rain-cloud. His mind keeps going back to it. And the remembering leaves the mind restless with longing.

His mind used to rest happily in the inner Self. It does not rest there any more. One glimpse of that light has spoiled it for anything else.
pratyag-ātman is a Vedāntic term: at home it names the Self turned inward, the innermost Self as against everything outward. Viśvanātha takes it in exactly that sense here and glosses it as brahman — the speaker is a sage whose settled ground was brahman.

”sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathīti yad āsīd iti dyuti-jayī” ity ata eva pāṭhās tv iṣṭāḥ ||
"sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathi" itithe reading 'sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathi' iti marks off a quoted stretch of text, not a sense — this whole segment is about wording'सान्द्रं महः पथि' — ऐसा (पाठ); 'इति' उद्धृत शब्दों की सीमा बाँधता है, अर्थ की नहीं — यह सारा प्रसंग पाठ का ही है
yad āsīd itiand the reading 'yad āsīt' — 'which was', split with the relative yat rather than yadā 'when''यद् आसीत्' — ऐसा (पाठ), अर्थात् 'यदा आसीत्' नहीं
dyuti-jayī itiand the reading 'dyuti-jayī''द्युति-जयी' — ऐसा (पाठ)
ata evafor just this reason eva tightens it: precisely on the ground already given, nothing furtherइसीलिए — 'एव' कसकर बाँधता है: जो हेतु ऊपर कहा जा चुका, ठीक उसी के बल पर, और कुछ जोड़े बिना
pāṭhāḥ tuthese readings, as against the others tu sets them off from rival wordings that are in circulationपाठ तो — 'तु' इन्हें चलती हुई दूसरी पाठ-कल्पनाओं से अलग करके दिखाता है
iṣṭāḥare the ones we want, the preferred onesअभीष्ट हैं, यही माने गए हैं
ata eva — for just this reason; "sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathi" iti, "yad āsīt" iti, "dyuti-jayī" iti pāṭhāḥ tu — but the readings 'sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathi', 'yad āsīt' and 'dyuti-jayī'; iṣṭāḥ — are the wanted ones.
Jīva is settling the text of the verse. Three wordings are the ones he wants: 'sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathi', 'yad āsīt', and 'dyuti-jayī'. He says it follows from the ground already given, so he does not argue it again.
The mūla as printed here agrees with the first two: sāndraṁ mahaḥ pathi vilocanayor yadāsīt, which can be split yad āsīt. On the third the printed line has jayi (neuter, agreeing with the radiance) where Jīva's preferred wording is written jayī.

yadwhich the relative, answered by tat in line 3 — this reading fixes the split as yad, not yadāजो — यह सम्बन्धवाचक है, जिसका उत्तर तीसरी पंक्ति का 'तत्' देता है; इस पाठ में पदच्छेद 'यद्' ही ठहरता है, 'यदा' नहीं
adhvanion the road adhvan stands where the verse has pathi; same sense, different wordमार्ग पर — जहाँ श्लोक में 'पथि' है वहाँ यहाँ 'अध्वन्' रखा गया है; अर्थ वही, शब्द दूसरा
vilocanayoḥof my two eyesदोनों नेत्रों का
ayāsītcame aorist of yā 'go, come', where the verse has āsīt 'was' from as. The variant makes the light come along the eyes' road instead of merely being thereआया — 'या' धातु का लुङ्, जहाँ श्लोक में 'अस्' से बना 'आसीत्' अर्थात् 'था' है।
śrī-mukundaḥ — Śrī Mukunda: sāndraṁ yat — the thick light which; vilocanayoḥ adhvani — on the road of the two eyes; ayāsīt — came.
Jīva now records a second wording of the line, transmitted under the name Śrī Mukunda: 'sāndraṁ yad adhvani vilocanayor ayāsīt'. It says 'road' for 'path' and 'came' for 'was'. He sets it down and leaves it standing beside the reading he prefers.

”tan-nīrada-dyuti-mahaḥ” iti pāṭhaḥ ||
"tan-nīrada-dyuti-mahaḥ" iti'that rain-cloud-glow radiance' the quoted wording puts mahaḥ, 'radiance', where the verse has jayi, 'outshining' — so the light is called the cloud's own glow instead of being said to beat it'तन्-नीरद-द्युति-महः' — ऐसा (उद्धृत पाठ); जहाँ श्लोक में 'जयि' अर्थात् 'जीतने वाला' है, वहाँ यह पाठ 'महः' अर्थात् 'तेज' रखता है — तब उस प्रकाश को मेघ की अपनी ही आभा कहा जाता है, यह नहीं कहा जाता कि वह उसे जीत लेता है
pāṭhaḥis another reading in circulation(ऐसा भी) पाठ है
"tat-nīrada-dyuti-mahaḥ" iti pāṭhaḥ — 'tan-nīrada-dyuti-mahaḥ' is a reading.
A further variant of line 3 is recorded: 'tan-nīrada-dyuti-mahaḥ'. It ends the compound with mahaḥ, 'radiance', in place of jayi, 'conquering'. Jīva only notes it; he does not choose between them here.

Viśvanātha names the nameless thing. The thick radiance at Kurukṣetra is Śrī Kṛṣṇa himself. The mind keeps remembering him, and so it no longer settles in the inner Self — which he glosses as brahman — the way it once did. Then he classes the verse: the whole thing happens with Kṛṣṇa out of sight, so this is the pārokṣya kind of śānta.
