L1definition
śānto dvidhaiṣa pārokṣya-sākṣātkāra-vibhedataḥ ||
śāntaḥthe śānta rasa (the peaceful mood)शान्त रस
eṣaḥthis one, the mood just describedयह, जिसका अभी वर्णन हुआ
dvidhācomes in two kindsदो प्रकार का (होता है)
pārokṣya-sākṣātkāra-vibhedataḥbecause they split into two — one where the Lord is out of sight, one where he is seen face to face ablative in -taḥ giving the ground of the division; pārokṣya is "being beyond the eye", sākṣātkāra is "having him right before the eyes".क्योंकि पारोक्ष्य और साक्षात्कार का भेद है — अर्थात् आँख से परे रहना और आँखों के सामने आ जाना, इन दो के अन्तर के कारण
eṣaḥ śāntaḥ — this śānta rasa; pārokṣya-sākṣātkāra-vibhedataḥ — by the split between his being out of sight and his being seen face to face; dvidhā — is of two kinds
śāntaḥ — शान्त रस; eṣaḥ — यह, जिसका अभी वर्णन हुआ; dvidhā — दो प्रकार का होता है; pārokṣya-sākṣātkāra-vibhedataḥ — पारोक्ष्य और साक्षात्कार के भेद के कारण।
This śānta rasa comes in two kinds. In one, the Lord has not yet been seen — he is only heard of, held in the mind. In the other, he is there in front of the eyes. That one difference makes the two divisions.
यह शान्त रस दो प्रकार का है। भेद का आधार यही है कि भगवान् दृष्टि से परे हैं या आँखों के सामने हैं। पहले भेद का नाम पारोक्ष्य है, दूसरे का साक्षात्कार।
pārokṣya is built on parokṣa, "beyond the eye"; sākṣātkāra is the opposite, "bringing him before the eyes". The verse that follows is the illustration of the first kind — the lead-in says atha parokṣyaṁ, yathā, "now the out-of-sight kind, as follows."
'पारोक्ष्य' शब्द 'परोक्ष' पर बना है — जो आँख से परे हो। 'साक्षात्कार' इसका उल्टा है — उसे आँखों के सामने ले आना। आगे आने वाला श्लोक पहले ही भेद का उदाहरण है; अवतरणिका कहती है 'अथ पारोक्ष्यं, यथा' — 'अब परोक्ष वाला भेद, इस प्रकार'।

mahat-tapaḥ — my great austerity; kim — will it; saphalatām prayāsyati — go on to bear fruit
prayāsyati — क्या पहुँचेगी; mahat-tapaḥ — बड़ी तपस्या; saphalatām — सफलता को; kim — क्या; aṣṭāṅgikā — आठ अंगों वाली।
Will my great austerity ever bear fruit? The eightfold one —
प्रश्न यही है — क्या यह बड़ी तपस्या सचमुच फल तक पहुँचेगी? 'अष्टांगिका' स्त्रीलिंग है, इसलिए वह 'तपः' का विशेषण नहीं बन सकता। वह अगली पंक्ति के 'योग-चर्या' से जुड़ता है।
An udāharaṇa of pārokṣya-śānta, the first of the two kinds just defined in the line above: the speaker has never seen the Lord, and the whole verse is spoken out of that not-yet-seeing. He is a practitioner addressing a senior sage.
यह अभी-अभी परिभाषित दो भेदों में से पहले, अर्थात् पारोक्ष्य-शान्त का उदाहरण है। बोलने वाले ने भगवान् को कभी देखा नहीं; पूरा श्लोक उसी न-देखने की स्थिति से निकला है। वह एक साधक है और किसी वृद्ध मुनि से पूछ रहा है।

munīśvara purātanī parama-yogacaryāpy asau |

munīśvara — हे मुनीश्वर; purātanī — पुरानी; parama-yoga-caryā — सर्वोत्तम योग की साधना; api — भी; asau — वह प्रसिद्ध।
— O lord of sages, this ancient eightfold practice, the highest yoga there is. Even that.
हे मुनीश्वर! वह प्रसिद्ध, पुरातन और सर्वश्रेष्ठ योग-साधना — वह भी। यहीं से प्रश्न का पूरा रूप बनता है।
api is doing the work of the verse. The speaker is not running down yoga; he is saying that even the best of it may fall short of the one thing he is asking for.

The speaker's Brahman is not featureless. He names it paraṁ brahma and in the same breath gives it a human form and a raincloud colour. That is the point Jīva picks up below.
वक्ता का ब्रह्म निराकार नहीं है। वह उसे 'परं ब्रह्म' कहता है और उसी साँस में उसे मनुष्य का रूप और मेघ का रंग देता है। नीचे जीव गोस्वामी इसी बात को पकड़ते हैं।

vilocana-camatkṛtim — नेत्रों के चमत्कार को; kathaya — कहिए; kiṁ nu — क्या भला; nirmāsyati — रच देगी।
— will it ever give my eyes that shock of wonder? Tell me. He has done the whole eightfold discipline. What he wants from it is not liberation. He wants to see that dark human form with his own eyes.
बताइए तो — क्या वह साधना मेरी आँखों के लिए वह चमत्कार रच देगी? अर्थात् क्या वह उस रूप को सचमुच मेरे सामने ले आएगी?
This is why the verse illustrates the out-of-sight kind of śānta: the seeing has not happened yet. The mood is there, the Lord is not yet before him.
इसीलिए यह श्लोक शान्त के परोक्ष भेद का उदाहरण है — दर्शन अभी हुआ ही नहीं। भाव तो है, पर भगवान् अभी सामने नहीं हैं।

na vyākhyātam — व्याख्या नहीं की गई; śrī-mukundaḥ — श्री मुकुन्द; śānta iti — 'शान्तः' यह पद; rasaḥ — रस।
Nothing is explained here. Then Śrī Mukunda's word is given: śānta in this line means the rasa. That is, the mood in its finished form, the thing the whole chapter is about — not a loose word for calmness.
इस स्थल की व्याख्या नहीं की गई। श्री मुकुन्द कहते हैं — 'शान्तः' का अर्थ है शान्त रस।

prayāsyati iti prathama-darśanārtham utkaṇṭheyam |
prayāsyati ition the words "will it reach" pratīka — the opening word of the illustrative verse, quoted to say what the whole question is.'प्रयास्यति' — उदाहरण-श्लोक का पहला शब्द, प्रतीक के रूप में उठाया गया, जिससे पूरे प्रश्न का तात्पर्य बताया जाए
prathama-darśanārthamaimed at seeing him for the very first time -artham closing the compound: "for the sake of". The word prathama, "first", is what ties the verse to the out-of-sight division.प्रथम दर्शन के लिए — 'प्रथम' शब्द ही इस श्लोक को परोक्ष भेद से जोड़ता है
utkaṇṭhā iyamthis is longing — the ache of reaching for someone not yet in viewयह उत्कण्ठा है, यही तड़प है
prayāsyati iti — as for "will it reach"; iyam — this; prathama-darśana-artham utkaṇṭhā — is a longing for a first sight of him
prayāsyati iti — 'प्रयास्यति' यह पद; prathama-darśanārtham — प्रथम दर्शन के लिए; utkaṇṭhā iyam — यह उत्कण्ठा।
Jīva's note names the emotion. The question is not a doubt about yoga. It is utkaṇṭhā — longing. And the longing is for a first sight of him. He has never seen him yet. That is exactly what makes this the out-of-sight kind of śānta.
'प्रयास्यति' से आरम्भ होने वाला यह श्लोक क्या कह रहा है? यह उत्कण्ठा पहली बार दर्शन पाने के लिए है। 'प्रथम' कहने से ही स्पष्ट है कि अभी तक देखा नहीं गया।

caturbhuja-niṣṭhā-paramso the phrase is set on the four-armed form — that is where this devotee's fixed regard restsचतुर्भुज रूप में निष्ठा को ही प्रधान मानने वाला
paraṁ brahmeti — the words "the supreme Brahman"; prakaṭa-īśvara-rūpa-bodhanena — because they make known the openly shown form of the Lord; caturbhuja-niṣṭhā-param — are directed at settled regard for the four-armed form
paraṁ brahmeti — 'परं ब्रह्म' यह पद; prakaṭeśvara-rūpa-bodhanena — प्रकट ईश्वर के रूप का बोध कराने के द्वारा; caturbhuja-niṣṭhā-param — चतुर्भुज-निष्ठा में तत्पर।
Why call him paraṁ brahma? Because the phrase announces the Lord in his displayed form, not a formless absolute. And Jīva reads that as pointing to the four-armed form — that is the form this śānta devotee settles on.
'परं ब्रह्म' पद प्रकट ईश्वर के रूप का बोध कराता है। उसी के द्वारा यह पद चतुर्भुज रूप में निष्ठा की ओर ले जाता है।

narākṛtitvād dvibhujatvaṁ tu sva-gopanārtham iti bhāvaḥ ||
narākṛtitvātbecause the verse says he stands in a human shape ablative of ground, reasoning from the word nara-ākṛti in the mūla.क्योंकि वह नर-आकृति वाला है — मूल के 'नराकृति' शब्द से यह हेतु निकाला गया
dvibhujatvamhis being two-armed followsदो भुजाओं वाला होना
tubut — this pulls against the four-armed form just namedपरन्तु
sva-gopanārthamis for hiding himself -artham again, "for the sake of": the two arms are a cover, not a lesser form.अपने को छिपाने के लिए — दो भुजाएँ आवरण हैं, कोई छोटा रूप नहीं
iti bhāvaḥthat is the sense of itयही भाव है
narākṛtitvāt — because he is in a human shape; dvibhujatvam — his two-armedness; tu — but; sva-gopana-artham — is for concealing himself; iti bhāvaḥ — such is the sense
narākṛtitvāt — नर-आकृति होने के कारण; dvibhujatvam — द्विभुजता; tu — परन्तु; sva-gopanārtham — अपने को छिपाने के लिए; iti bhāvaḥ — यह भाव है।
But the verse says human form, and a human form has two arms, not four. Jīva answers that the two arms are a disguise. He shows himself that way to keep himself hidden. So the four-armed reading stands, and the two-armed look is the covering over it.
नर-आकृति कहा गया है, इसलिए द्विभुज रूप आया। पर वह द्विभुजता अपने को छिपाने के लिए है। यही यहाँ का भाव है।

Viśvanātha puts the verse into prose order. The subject is asau yoga-caryā, this practice of yoga; the question is whether even that will bear fruit. Once the words are lined up like this, the sentence reads straight off.
श्लोक का अन्वय ऐसा है — वह योग-साधना भी क्या सफलता तक पहुँचेगी? इस प्रकार 'अष्टांगिका' आदि विशेषण योग-चर्या के साथ जुड़ते हैं।
