L1definition
atra śānti-ratiḥ sthāyī samā sāndrā ca sā dvidhā ||
atrahere — that is, in śānta-bhakti-rasa, the rasa now under discussion locative of the topic; picks up the section, not a placeयहाँ — अर्थात् इस शान्त-रस के प्रकरण में (किसी स्थान का नहीं, प्रसंग का निर्देश)
śānti-ratiḥthe love called śānti — attachment to Kṛṣṇa in the peaceful moodशान्ति-रति — शान्ति के रूप में रहनेवाली भगवान् के प्रति रति
sthāyīis the sthāyi-bhāva, the standing emotion that runs through the whole rasa masculine sthāyī agreeing with the understood sthāyi-bhāvaḥ, though ratiḥ is feminineस्थायी भाव है — यहाँ 'स्थायी' पुल्लिंग है, क्योंकि उसका सम्बन्ध अध्याहृत 'स्थायि-भावः' से है, यद्यपि 'रतिः' स्त्रीलिंग है
samāthe first kind is samā, love that stays even and unruffledसमा — जो सम है, एकरस है, जिसमें उतार-चढ़ाव नहीं
sāndrāthe second is sāndrā, love that has thickened and grown denseसान्द्रा — जो गाढ़ी है, घनी है
caand — the two are listed together, not ranked against each otherऔर — दोनों भेदों को जोड़ता है
that same śānti-rati feminine sā resumes śānti-ratiḥ; it is the subject of dvidhāवह — स्त्रीलिंग 'सा' उसी शान्ति-रति को फिर पकड़ता है, और वही 'द्विधा' का कर्ता है
atra — here, in śānta-rasa; śānti-ratiḥ — the love called śānti; sthāyī — is the standing emotion; — and that same love; samā sāndrā ca — as samā and as sāndrā; dvidhā — is of two kinds.
In this rasa, the standing emotion is śānti-rati — love for Kṛṣṇa in the peaceful mood. It comes in two kinds. One is samā, love that stays level and calm. The other is sāndrā, love that has grown thick and concentrated.
samā and sāndrā are ordinary words used technically here: samā is what is even, level, unvarying; sāndrā is what is thick or dense, like milk boiled down. Both name the same śānti-rati, differing in how concentrated it has become.
