ayamthis one, right hereयह, जो सामने बैठा है
puraḥin front of usसामने, आँखों के आगे
muniḥthe sage, the silent oneमुनि — मननशील, मौन साधक
ayam muniḥ — this sage; puraḥ — in front of us; nāsikāgra-dṛk — with his eyes resting on the tip of his nose
nāsikāgra-dṛk — जिसकी दृष्टि नासिका के अग्रभाग पर स्थिर है; ayam — यह; puraḥ — सामने ही; muniḥ — मुनि (विराजमान है)।
Look — this sage, right here in front of us. His eyes are settled on the tip of his nose.
सामने यह मुनि बैठा है। उसकी दृष्टि नाक के अगले भाग पर टिकी हुई है।
An udāharaṇa of nāsāgra-nayanatvam, 'having the eyes fixed on the tip of the nose', the anubhāva named in this unit's lead-in: tatra nāsāgra-nayanatvaṁ, yathā — 'as for that, having the eyes at the nose-tip, as follows'.
यह 'नासाग्र-नयनत्व' का — अर्थात् आँखों का नाक के अग्रभाग पर टिका रहना, इस अनुभाव का — उदाहरण है, जिसे इसी प्रकरण की भूमिका में कहा गया है: 'तत्र नासाग्र-नयनत्वं, यथा' — 'उनमें से नासाग्र-नयनत्व का उदाहरण इस प्रकार है'।

spanda-bandhura-śirāḥ — his head lovely as it quivers; virājate — sits there shining
spanda-bandhura-śirāḥ — जिसका सिर हल्के स्पन्दन से मनोहर तथा किंचित् नत है; virājate — वह शोभित हो रहा है।
His head trembles a little, and that slight nodding is itself lovely. So he sits, shining.
उसका सिर हल्का-सा काँप रहा है। उसी हल्के कम्पन से वह और भी सुन्दर लग रहा है। ऐसा वह मुनि वहाँ विराजमान है।

His mind is a mountain cave. Inside it there is a still bank, and nothing troubles the water there.
उसका चित्त मानो एक पर्वत-गुफा है। उस गुफा के भीतर जल है, और उसका तट बिलकुल शान्त है — वहाँ कोई हलचल नहीं।

nūnam — surely; hariḥ — Hari himself; asya citta-kandara-taṭīm anākulām — the undisturbed bank in the cave of this sage's mind; avagāhate — is plunging into it and bathing
asya — इस मुनि के (चित्त-गुफा-तट में); nūnam — निश्चय ही; hariḥ — श्रीहरि; avagāhate — अवगाहन कर रहे हैं।
Why else would he tremble like that? Hari himself must be stepping down into that still pool in the cave of his mind and bathing there. The quiver on the outside is the ripple from that.
उस शान्त तट में निश्चय ही श्रीहरि उतरकर स्नान कर रहे हैं। इसीलिए मुनि का सिर वैसे काँप रहा है।

atra — यहाँ; nāsikāgra-dṛg iti — 'नासिकाग्र-दृक्' यह पद; munir iti ca — और 'मुनिः' यह पद; tasya — उसका; ātmārāmatvam — आत्माराम होना; dyotyate — प्रकट करते हैं।
Two words do one job here: 'eyes at the tip of the nose' and 'sage'. Both together show that this man is ātmārāma — he draws his satisfaction from the self, not from anything outside. That much the words only hint at; they light it up rather than state it.
'नासिकाग्र-दृक्' और 'मुनिः' — ये दो शब्द एक ही बात कहते हैं। इनसे यह प्रकट होता है कि वह आत्माराम है, अपने भीतर ही रमा हुआ है।

atra tu spanda-bandhura-śirā iti viśeṣānubhavaḥ |
atra tubut here — turning now to the next phrase tu 'but' sets this line off against the two words just handled: those showed ātmārāmatva, this one does something elseपरन्तु यहाँ — अर्थात् अभी कहे गए उन दो पदों से हटकर, इस पद में
spanda-bandhura-śirā itithe phrase 'his head lovely as it quivers''स्पन्द-बन्धुर-शिराः' — यह पद
viśeṣānubhavaḥis the distinctive anubhāva — the outward sign that marks this mood off from any otherविशेष अनुभव है — अर्थात् वह विशेष अनुभाव, जो भीतर के भाव को बाहर दिखा देता है
atra tu — but here; spanda-bandhura-śirā iti — the phrase 'his head lovely as it quivers'; viśeṣānubhavaḥ — is the distinctive anubhāva
atra tu — परन्तु यहाँ; spanda-bandhura-śirā iti — 'स्पन्द-बन्धुर-शिराः' यह पद; viśeṣānubhavaḥ — विशेष अनुभव (अनुभाव) है।
But the next phrase is doing something different. 'His head lovely as it quivers' is the anubhāva — the bodily sign. And it is the distinctive one: sitting still with lowered eyes any yogī can do, but this trembling of the head is the sign peculiar to this mood.
उन दो पदों ने आत्माराम होना दिखाया। परन्तु 'स्पन्द-बन्धुर-शिराः' यह पद कुछ और ही दिखाता है — यहाँ एक विशेष अनुभव है।
anubhāva is the technical term for the outward, bodily expression by which an inner mood is read off — here the small tremor of the head.
'अनुभाव' शास्त्रीय पारिभाषिक शब्द है — भीतर का भाव जिस बाहरी, शरीरगत चेष्टा से पहचान लिया जाता है, वही अनुभाव है। यहाँ वह चेष्टा है सिर का वह हल्का-सा कम्पन।
s3conclusion
sa ca śrī-hari-guṇātmaka eva sambhavati |
sa caand that quiverऔर वह (विशेष अनुभव)
śrī-hari-guṇātmakaḥ evaonly when it is made of Śrī Hari's qualities — only as a stirring of relish for them eva 'only' is the whole force of the sentence: it rules out any other cause for the tremorश्रीहरि के गुणों से ही बना हुआ — 'ही' से और कोई कारण नहीं रहने पाता
sambhavatican it possibly come aboutसम्भव होता है, तभी उत्पन्न हो सकता है
sa ca — and that quiver; śrī-hari-guṇātmakaḥ eva — only as made of Śrī Hari's qualities; sambhavati — can come about
sa ca — और वह अनुभव; śrī-hari-guṇātmakaḥ eva — श्रीहरि के गुणों से ही बना हुआ; sambhavati — सम्भव होता है।
And that tremor cannot arise from bare self-absorption. It happens only when what is being tasted inside is Śrī Hari's qualities. The quiver is made of that tasting — nothing else could produce it.
और वह विशेष अनुभव श्रीहरि के गुणों से ही बना हो सकता है। दूसरे किसी कारण से नहीं।
This is the step that turns the verse into śānta-bhakti-rasa rather than plain yoga: the sage is ātmārāma, but the sign on his body is caused by Hari, so Hari is present inside the stillness.
यही वह पग है जो इस श्लोक को केवल योग नहीं, शान्त-भक्ति-रस बना देता है। मुनि आत्माराम तो है, परन्तु उसके शरीर पर जो चिह्न दीख रहा है उसका कारण श्रीहरि हैं — अर्थात् उस निस्तब्धता के भीतर हरि विराजमान हैं।

ātmārāmāś ca munayaḥ ity-āder iti bhāvaḥ ||
ātmārāmāś ca munayaḥ'and sages who take their pleasure in the self…' — the opening words of the quoted verse'आत्मारामाश्च मुनयः' — 'मुनिगण, जो आत्माराम हैं…'

ātmārāmāś ca munayaḥ ity-ādeḥ — on the strength of the passage beginning 'and sages who take their pleasure in the self'; iti bhāvaḥ — that is the idea
ātmārāmāś ca munayaḥ ity-ādeḥ — 'आत्मारामाश्च मुनयः' इत्यादि श्लोक के बल पर; iti bhāvaḥ — ऐसा आशय है।
He is leaning on the well-known verse that begins 'and sages who take their pleasure in the self…' — the one that ends by saying Hari's qualities are of such a kind. That is the thought behind the last sentence.
'आत्मारामाश्च मुनयः' — इस प्रकार आरम्भ होने वाले श्लोक के आधार पर यह कहा गया है। यही यहाँ का आशय है।
Why cited: Adduced to prove the previous claim: even ātmārāma sages are pulled into loving service by Hari's qualities, so the quiver on this ātmārāma sage's head must likewise be made of relish for those qualities.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह प्रमाण पूर्वोक्त बात को सिद्ध करने के लिए दिया गया है — आत्माराम मुनि तक श्रीहरि के गुणों से खिंचकर उनकी प्रेममयी सेवा में लग जाते हैं; अतः इस आत्माराम मुनि के सिर का कम्पन भी उन्हीं गुणों के आस्वाद से ही बना होगा।
The quoted words are from the Bhāgavata-purāṇa (1.7.10), cited here only by their opening; the commentator abbreviates with ity-ādi and expects the class to finish it.
उद्धृत शब्द श्रीमद्भागवत (१.७.१०) के हैं। टीकाकार केवल उसका आरम्भ ही देकर 'इत्यादि' कह देते हैं और शेष श्लोक को छात्र स्वयं पूरा कर लेंगे, ऐसी अपेक्षा रखते हैं।
