bhaktir muktyaiva nirvighnety ātta-yukta-viraktatāḥ |
bhaktiḥbhakti (devotional service) — the thing they are thinking aboutभक्ति
muktyāonly once liberation has come instrumental of means — 'by / through mukti'मुक्ति के द्वारा ही, मुक्ति को साधन बनाकर
evaonly that way, not otherwiseही — और किसी उपाय से नहीं
itithis is what they hold quotative — closes the thought that motivates them'ऐसा है' — यही वह विचार है जिसके कारण वे आगे का कदम उठाते हैं
ātta-yukta-viraktatāḥthey have taken up a fitting detachment bahuvrīhi — 'by whom a suitable detachment has been taken up'; ātta = 'taken up', yukta = 'fitting, not overdone'जिन्होंने उचित मात्रा का वैराग्य ग्रहण कर रखा है
bhaktiḥ — bhakti; muktyā eva — only through liberation; nirvighnā — runs unobstructed; iti — so they hold; ātta-yukta-viraktatāḥ — and so they have taken up a fitting detachment
They hold this: bhakti only runs free of obstacles once liberation has come. Holding that, they take up a detachment that is measured and fitting.
yukta-viraktatā is detachment kept in proportion — not the dry, forced renunciation that fights the body, and not indulgence either.

anujjhita-mumukṣāḥthey have not let go of the wish to be liberated bahuvrīhi — 'by whom the desire for mokṣa has not been abandoned'जिन्होंने मोक्ष की इच्छा छोड़ी नहीं है
ye bhajantethose who nevertheless worshipजो भजन करते हैं
te tuthey, however — this class as against the ones just describedवे ही तो — यहाँ 'तु' उन्हें औरों से अलग करके दिखाता है
tāpasāḥare called tāpasas, the asceticsतापस कहलाते हैं
ye — those who; anujjhita-mumukṣāḥ — have not given up the wish for liberation; bhajante — yet worship; te tu — they, however; tāpasāḥ — are the tāpasas
Those who still keep the wish to be liberated, and yet worship — they are the tāpasas. Rūpa Gosvāmī marks them off with tu as their own class among the śānta devotees.
The lead-in reads atha tāpasāḥ, 'now the tāpasas' — so these two lines are the lakṣaṇa, the defining verse, of this class.

An udāharaṇa, an illustrative verse in the voice of a tāpasa, showing the lakṣaṇa given just above in 3.1.15: one who keeps a fitting detachment and still worships.

The object of this devotee's meditation is stated as jyotiḥ, light, and as cid-ānanda — the way a śānta devotee inclined to liberation conceives the Lord.

mukundābhidham iti — as for 'the one named Mukunda'
Jīva picks up the word mukundābhidham from the verse and now explains it.

svabhāvata eva saṁsāra-haraṇān mukundābhidhaṁ mukti-dātāraṁ |
svabhāvataḥ evaby his very nature, not by anything addedस्वभाव से ही — किसी प्रयत्न या शर्त से नहीं
saṁsāra-haraṇātbecause he takes away rebirth ablative of reason — this is why the name fitsक्योंकि वे संसार को हर लेते हैं — इसी कारण यह नाम ठीक बैठता है
mukti-dātāramthe one who gives liberation accusative, matching mukundābhidham in the verseअर्थात् मुक्ति देने वाले को
svabhāvataḥ eva — by his own nature; saṁsāra-haraṇāt — because he removes rebirth; mukundābhidham — 'the one named Mukunda' means; mukti-dātāram — the giver of liberation
Mukunda means the giver of liberation. He earns that name because removing saṁsāra is simply his nature — nothing has to be done to make him so.
The name is read as muk (mukti) + da (giver). Jīva grounds it in svabhāva: the tāpasa is worshipping the one who by nature does the very thing the tāpasa wants.

upalakṣaṇamis only a pointer, standing for more than it namesउपलक्षण है, केवल संकेत करने वाला शब्द है
ahorātrānnamely the days-and-nights accusative plural — the real object of vineṣyāmi once the pointer is unpackedदिन-रात को — संकेत खुलने पर यही 'विनेष्यामि' का असली कर्म है
iti arthaḥthat is the senseयही तात्पर्य है
rajanīḥ iti — the word 'nights'; upalakṣaṇam — is a pointer only; ahorātrān iti arthaḥ — the sense is 'the days and nights'
'Nights' is not meant narrowly. It is a pointer: read it as whole days and nights. He wants every stretch of time to pass in that meditation, not the night hours alone.
upalakṣaṇa versus viśeṣaṇa: 'the blue lotus' — blue is a viśeṣaṇa, part of what the thing is; 'the house with the crow on it' — the crow is an upalakṣaṇa, it only helps you find the house and is not part of it. Here 'nights' works like the crow: it flags the stretch of time without limiting it to nights.

tri-rātram api'even for three nights'तीन रात भी

itivatjust as in that usage -vat = 'in the manner of' — the quotation is adduced as a parallel of usage, not as doctrineजैसे यह वाक्य है, वैसे ही — 'वत्' का अर्थ है 'की तरह', अर्थात् यह प्रयोग-सादृश्य के लिए दिया गया है, सिद्धान्त के लिए नहीं
tri-rātram api ye tatra vasanti — 'those who live there even three nights'; itivat — the usage works the same way here
Compare the familiar line, 'those who live there even three nights.' There too 'nights' means full days and nights. Jīva takes rajanīḥ the same way.
Why cited: Cited as a parallel of ordinary Sanskrit usage, to show that a word for 'night' regularly stands for the whole day-and-night period — so 'nights' in the verse is an upalakṣaṇa.

bhaktiḥ na bhavatibhakti does not happenभक्ति नहीं होती
itithis is their reasoningऐसा (उनका मत है)
muktyā — 'by liberation', that is; jīvan-muktatayā — by being liberated while alive; bhaktiḥ nirvighnā — bhakti is unobstructed; anyathā — otherwise; kāma-krodhādi-vighna-sattve — when lust, anger and such obstacles are present; sarvadā pravāha-rūpeṇa — constantly, as an unbroken flow; bhaktiḥ na bhavati — bhakti does not occur; iti — so they think
Viśvanātha reads mukti here as jīvan-mukti, freedom while still in the body. Their thought is: with that freedom, bhakti runs without obstruction. Without it, lust and anger and the rest are still sitting there as obstacles, and then bhakti cannot flow steadily and unbroken.
Note what is denied: not that bhakti occurs at all, but that it occurs sarvadā pravāha-rūpeṇa — always, as a continuous stream.

He unpacks both compounds. ātta means taken up; so these are people who have taken up a fitting detachment. anujjhitā means not let go; so these are also people who still keep the wish for liberation. And here is his point: even though a second desire is present in them — the wish for mokṣa — their bhakti does not thereby stop being pure.
anya-abhilāṣa, 'another desire', is the standard disqualifier of śuddha-bhakti (cf. anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam, 1.1.11). Viśvanātha grants that a desire is present here and still refuses the disqualification; the reason follows in the next sentence.

yato bhakter vighna-svarūpasya kāmāder nivṛtty-artham eva saṁsāra-mocanecchā, na tu sāyujyārthaṁ |
yataḥbecause — here is the reason for that last claimक्योंकि
bhakteḥ vighna-svarūpasya kāmādeḥof lust and the rest, which are by their very make the obstacle to bhakti genitive governed by nivṛtti — 'the ceasing of…'
nivṛtty-artham evapurely in order to be rid of them dative-sense compound of purpose; eva excludes any other motiveनिवृत्ति के लिए ही — 'एव' किसी दूसरे उद्देश्य को हटा देता है
saṁsāra-mocanecchāis their wish to be released from saṁsāraसंसार से छूटने की इच्छा है
na tu sāyujyārthambut it is not for the sake of merging into him tu marks the sharp contrast — this is what would have destroyed the purityसायुज्य के लिए नहीं — 'तु' यहाँ तीखा भेद खींचता है, क्योंकि सायुज्य की चाह ही शुद्धता को तोड़ती
yataḥ — because; bhakteḥ vighna-svarūpasya kāmādeḥ — of lust and the rest, which are the very obstacle to bhakti; nivṛtty-artham eva — only for the sake of their ceasing; saṁsāra-mocanecchā — is the wish for release from saṁsāra; na tu sāyujyārtham — and not for the sake of merging
Why does the purity survive? Because of what they actually want liberation for. They want out of saṁsāra only so that lust and anger — the things blocking bhakti — will stop. They are not after sāyujya, merging into the Lord. A desire aimed at clearing the obstacles to bhakti is not a rival desire.
The whole defence turns on the object of the wish, not on its presence: mokṣa wanted as sāyujya would be a rival aim; mokṣa wanted as the end of kāma is in service of bhakti.

ahorātramnamely the day-and-night accusative singular here — the whole round of day and night taken as one spanअहोरात्र — यहाँ एकवचन है, अर्थात् दिन-रात का पूरा चक्र एक अवधि के रूप में लिया गया
iti arthaḥthat is the senseऐसा अर्थ है
rajanīḥ iti — the word 'nights'; upalakṣaṇam — is a pointer; ahorātram iti arthaḥ — the sense is 'the day-and-night'
'Nights' is a pointer, not a limit. Read it as the whole day-and-night.
upalakṣaṇa versus viśeṣaṇa: in 'the blue lotus', blue is a viśeṣaṇa — part of what the thing is; in 'the house with the crow on it', the crow is an upalakṣaṇa — it only identifies the house and is no part of it. 'Nights' here works like the crow: it points to the span of time without restricting it to the dark hours.

itivatjust as in that usage -vat = 'in the manner of' — offered as a parallel of usage, not as a scriptural proof of doctrineइस वाक्य की तरह — 'वत्' अर्थात् 'की भाँति'; यह प्रयोग का दृष्टान्त है, शास्त्रीय सिद्धान्त का प्रमाण नहीं
tri-rātram api kṣetre vasati — 'one dwells in the holy place even three nights'; itivat — the same way of speaking applies here
Compare the line, 'one dwells in the holy place even three nights.' There 'nights' means full days and nights. So too here.
Why cited: Cited as a parallel of ordinary usage, showing that a count of 'nights' regularly names whole day-and-night periods — which is what licenses reading rajanīḥ as an upalakṣaṇa.
