vakṣyamāṇaiḥ — जिनका कथन आगे होगा; vibhāvādyaiḥ — उन विभाव आदि के द्वारा; śamināṁ — शमी पुरुषों के द्वारा; svādyatāṁ — आस्वाद्यता को; gataḥ — प्राप्त हुआ।
Take the śānti attachment. Join it with the vibhāvas and the other ingredients — Rūpa Gosvāmī will spell those out later in this laharī. Once joined, it turns into something that can be tasted. And the ones doing the tasting are the śamīs, the people in whom the quieted mind rules.
आगे जिन विभाव, अनुभाव आदि का वर्णन किया जाएगा, उनके योग से वह भाव ऐसा हो जाता है कि शमी पुरुष उसका आस्वादन कर सकें। इसी को कहते हैं कि वह आस्वाद्यता को प्राप्त हो गया।
vibhāva and its companions (anubhāva, sāttvika-bhāva, vyabhicāri-bhāva) are the standard Sanskrit dramaturgy terms for the causes, outward signs and passing feelings that a poet supplies so an audience can taste an emotion; here they do the same job inside bhakti.
विभाव और उसके साथी — अनुभाव, सात्त्विक भाव, व्यभिचारी भाव — संस्कृत नाट्यशास्त्र के प्रसिद्ध शब्द हैं। कवि इनके द्वारा भाव के कारण, बाहरी चिह्न और आने-जाने वाली वृत्तियाँ प्रस्तुत करता है, जिससे श्रोता उस भाव का रसास्वादन कर सके। यहाँ भक्ति के भीतर भी वे यही काम करते हैं।

śānta-bhakti-rasaḥis śānta-bhakti-rasa, the devotional mood of stillnessशान्त-भक्ति-रस (इस नाम से)
smṛtaḥis what it is called, is recorded as being past passive participle, masculine — agreeing with rasaḥ, not with the feminine ratiḥकहा गया, माना गया है — यह पुंलिंग है, अतः 'रस' से मेल खाता है, स्त्रीलिंग 'रति' से नहीं
śānti-ratiḥ — the attachment called śānti; sthāyī — being the lasting mood; dhīraiḥ — by the thoughtful ones; śānta-bhakti-rasaḥ — as śānta-bhakti-rasa; smṛtaḥ — is called.
sthāyī — स्थायी भाव; śānti-ratiḥ — शान्ति-रति; dhīraiḥ — धीर पुरुषों के द्वारा; śānta-bhakti-rasaḥ — शान्त-भक्ति-रस; smṛtaḥ — कहा गया है।
The śānti attachment is the lasting mood here. When it has been brought to that tasteable state, the thoughtful ones call it śānta-bhakti-rasa. That is the definition: sthāyī plus the ingredients equals rasa.
यहाँ स्थायी भाव है शान्ति-रति। जब वह ऊपर कही हुई सामग्री से आस्वाद्य हो जाती है, तब धीर पुरुष उसे शान्त-भक्ति-रस कहते हैं।
sthāyin, 'the abiding one', is the technical name for the one emotion that runs through a whole work and absorbs the passing feelings; the transient ones (vyabhicārin) come and go over it.
'स्थायी' का अर्थ है — जो ठहरा रहता है। यह उस एक भाव का पारिभाषिक नाम है जो पूरी रचना में बहता रहता है और आने-जाने वाले भावों को अपने में समा लेता है। व्यभिचारी भाव उसके ऊपर उठते और बैठते रहते हैं।

sthāyī iti — as for the word sthāyī; sthāyi-bhāva-paryāyaḥ — it is a synonym of sthāyi-bhāva.
sthāyī iti — 'स्थायी' यह पद; sthāyi-bhāva-paryāyaḥ — स्थायी भाव का पर्याय है।
Jīva starts with the word sthāyī. It is not a new term. It is simply the short form of sthāyi-bhāva, the lasting emotion.
श्लोक में जो 'स्थायी' कहा है, वह 'स्थायी भाव' का ही दूसरा नाम है।

bhīmaḥ — 'भीम'; bhīmasenaḥ — 'भीमसेन'; itivat — इसके समान।
He gives a homely parallel. People say Bhīma when they mean Bhīmasena. The short form carries the full word's sense. Map it: Bhīma is sthāyī, Bhīmasena is sthāyi-bhāva. The point of the comparison is only that a clipped name is still the same name — nothing about the hero himself is being brought in.
जैसे 'भीम' कहने से 'भीमसेन' का ही बोध होता है, वैसा ही यहाँ समझना चाहिए।

tataḥ — therefore; sva-liṅgam — its own gender; na tyajati — it does not give up.
tataḥ — इसलिए; sva-liṅgaṁ — अपना लिंग; na tyajati — नहीं छोड़ता।
So the short word keeps the gender of the long one. Bhīma stays masculine because Bhīmasena is masculine. In the same way sthāyī stays masculine because sthāyi-bhāva is masculine — even though the word it describes, śānti-ratiḥ, is feminine. That is why the verse does not read sthāyinī.
इसीलिए संक्षिप्त रूप अपना लिंग नहीं छोड़ता। 'स्थायी' पुंलिंग ही रहता है।
liṅga here is grammatical gender, not 'mark' in the philosophical sense; the rule being applied is the ordinary one that an abbreviated name retains the gender of the full form it stands for.
यहाँ 'लिंग' का अर्थ व्याकरण का लिंग है, दार्शनिक अर्थ में 'चिह्न' नहीं। जो नियम लगाया जा रहा है वह साधारण है — संक्षिप्त नाम उसी लिंग को पकड़े रहता है जो पूरे रूप का था।

Now the whole verse in one sentence. The lasting emotion here is the śānti attachment. It joins with the vibhāvas and the other ingredients that come later in this laharī. The people in whom the quieted mind rules then taste it — Jīva makes that explicit: the śamīs are the agents, the tasters. And the mood does not merely give them something to taste; it becomes the tasted thing itself. If that happens, the poets call it śānta-bhakti-rasa. That, says Jīva, is the meaning.
अतः शान्ति-रति ही जिसका स्वरूप है, वह स्थायी भाव आगे कहे जाने वाले विभाव आदि के साथ मिल जाता है। तब शमी पुरुष उसका आस्वादन करते हैं, और वह उसी आस्वाद्य रूप को प्राप्त कर लेता है। यदि ऐसा हो जाए, तो कवि उसे शान्त-भक्ति-रस कहते हैं। श्लोक का यही अर्थ है।

Someone could ask: earlier, at 2.5.8, pure rati was divided into three — sāmānyā, svacchā and śānti. Why is only one of them being made into a rasa? Jīva answers. Only śānti is taught as a rasa here. The general kind is too indistinct to come out clearly. The transparent kind keeps shifting from mood to mood. In neither of them could the full set of rasa's ingredients be brought to ripeness. That is the intention behind singling out śānti.
यद्यपि शुद्धा के तीन भेद कहे गए हैं — सामान्या, स्वच्छा और शान्ति। तो भी यहाँ रसता का प्रतिपादन केवल शान्ति की ही किया गया है। कारण यह कि सामान्या स्पष्ट नहीं होती और स्वच्छा चंचल रहती है। इन दोनों में रस की सामग्री का पूरा पोषण नहीं हो सकता। इसी अभिप्राय से ऐसा कहा गया है।
