The verse — decoded
L1invocation
dhṛta-mugdha-rūpa-bhāro bhāgavatārpita-pṛthu-premā |
dhṛta-mugdha-rūpa-bhāraḥhe who has taken up the weight of mugdha-rūpa — on one reading, a great load of charming beauty; on the other, the burden of Rūpa, the bewildered one bahuvrīhi: 'by whom the bhāra has been dhṛta, borne'. The śleṣa sits right here — mugdha means both 'charming' and 'bewildered, knowing nothing', and rūpa means both 'form, beauty' and the poet's own name, Rūpa.जिसने मुग्ध रूप का भार धारण कर रखा है — 'मुग्ध' अर्थात् मनोहर, और 'मुग्ध' अर्थात् कुछ न जाननेवाला; 'रूप' अर्थात् सौन्दर्य, और 'रूप' अर्थात् कवि का अपना नाम
bhāgavatārpita-pṛthu-premāwhose vast love has been laid out for the bhāgavatas, the devotees bahuvrīhi again: pṛthu-premā, 'having ample love', with that love arpita, 'placed, offered'.जिसका प्रचुर प्रेम भागवत को अर्पित है — अर्थात् जिसने अपना विपुल प्रेम उन्हें सौंप दिया है
dhṛta-mugdha-rūpa-bhāraḥ — he who bears the weight of mugdha-rūpa (charming beauty / bewildered Rūpa); bhāgavatārpita-pṛthu-premā — whose vast love is offered to the bhāgavatas.
dhṛta-mugdha-rūpa-bhāraḥ — जिसने मुग्ध रूप का भार धारण किया है; bhāgavatārpita-pṛthu-premā — जिसका विपुल प्रेम भागवत को अर्पित है।
He carries the weight of mugdha-rūpa, and his vast love is poured out on the devotees. Both words in that compound face two ways at once. Read one way: he bears a great load of enchanting beauty. Read the other way: he has shouldered the burden of Rūpa, the bewildered one who knows nothing — the poet naming himself.
जिसने मुग्ध रूप का भार उठा रखा है। और जिसका प्रचुर प्रेम भागवत को अर्पित है। दोनों ही विशेषण दो-दो अर्थ लिए हुए हैं — 'मुग्ध' मनोहर भी है और अनजान भी, तथा 'रूप' सौन्दर्य भी है और ग्रन्थकार का नाम भी।
This is the opening blessing-verse (maṅgala) of the Paścima-vibhāga, and it is a śleṣa from end to end: one set of words praising the Supreme Person and, at the same time, Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmī. Keep both layers live — the commentators below work through them side by side.
यह पश्चिम-विभाग का मंगलाचरण-श्लोक है, और आदि से अन्त तक श्लेषमय है — एक ही शब्दावली से पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् की स्तुति होती है और साथ-साथ श्रीसनातन गोस्वामी की भी। दोनों स्तर साथ-साथ जीवित रखिए; नीचे के टीकाकार उन्हें अगल-बगल रखकर ही खोलते हैं।

sanātana-mūrtiḥwhose form is sanātana — on one reading, eternal, never beginning and never ending; on the other, whose mūrti goes by the name Sanātana bahuvrīhi; sanātana is the second hinge of the śleṣa, read once as the adjective 'everlasting' and once as a proper name.जिसका स्वरूप सनातन है — और दूसरे अर्थ में, जिसका स्वरूप 'सनातन' नामवाला है
tanotumay he spread out, may he extend in full measure imperative — this is the actual request the whole verse is building to.विस्तार करें, फैलाएँ — यही वह प्रार्थना है जिसकी ओर सारा श्लोक बढ़ रहा था
puruṣottamaḥthe Supreme Person, highest among all personsपुरुषोत्तम
tuṣṭimhis being pleased, his satisfactionतुष्टि को, प्रसन्नता को
saḥ — he; sanātana-mūrtiḥ — whose form is eternal (or: whose mūrti is named Sanātana); puruṣottamaḥ — the Supreme Person; mayi — upon me; tuṣṭim — his pleasure; tanotu — may he spread out.
saḥ — वही; sanātana-mūrtiḥ — जिसका स्वरूप सनातन है (अथवा जिसका स्वरूप 'सनातन' नामवाला है); puruṣottamaḥ — पुरुषोत्तम; mayi — मुझ पर; tuṣṭim — तुष्टि को; tanotu — विस्तृत करें।
May he extend his pleasure over me — that Puruṣottama, whose form is sanātana. And sanātana too says two things: the form that never ends, and the mūrti that carries the name Sanātana. The prayer itself is simple: let his satisfaction reach me.
वही पुरुषोत्तम, जिनका स्वरूप सनातन है, मुझ पर अपनी तुष्टि विस्तृत करें। और उसी शब्द को नाम मानें तो — जिनका स्वरूप 'सनातन' नामवाला है, वे मुझ पर प्रसन्नता फैलाएँ।

dhṛta- iti pūrvavat śliṣṭaṁ, mugdhādi-śabdānāṁ dvy-arthatvāt |
dhṛta- itithe verse that begins 'dhṛta-' — pratīka: the commentary names a verse by quoting its first word and adding iti.'धृत' इत्यादि श्लोक — टीका श्लोक का पहला शब्द उद्धृत करके उसमें 'इति' जोड़कर उसे नाम देती है
pūrvavatworks the same way the earlier opening verses didपहले की ही भाँति
śliṣṭamit is built on śleṣa — one string of words saying two things at onceश्लिष्ट है, अर्थात् एक साथ दो अर्थ लिए हुए है
mugdhādi-śabdānāmof the words mugdha and the rest'मुग्ध' आदि शब्दों का
dvy-arthatvātand that is possible because each of them carries two meanings ablative of reason — it supplies the 'because' for śliṣṭam; the -tva abstraction is just 'they have two senses'.क्योंकि वे दो अर्थ रखते हैं
dhṛta- iti — the verse beginning 'dhṛta-'; pūrvavat — as in the earlier openings; śliṣṭam — is a double-meaning verse; mugdhādi-śabdānām dvy-arthatvāt — because the words mugdha and so on each carry two senses.
dhṛta- iti — 'धृत' इत्यादि श्लोक; pūrvavat — पहले की भाँति; śliṣṭam — श्लिष्ट है; mugdhādi-śabdānām — 'मुग्ध' आदि शब्दों के; dvy-arthatvāt — दो अर्थ होने के कारण।
Jīva starts by naming the verse: the one that begins dhṛta-. It is a śleṣa, just like the opening verses before it. And it can be, because mugdha and the words alongside it each hold two meanings at the same time.
'धृत' से आरम्भ होनेवाला यह श्लोक पहले की ही भाँति श्लिष्ट है। कारण यह कि 'मुग्ध' आदि शब्द दो-दो अर्थ रखते हैं।

saundarya-pakṣewhen you take the beauty side of the double meaning pakṣa = 'side, option'; the locative sets which of the two readings is being worked on — 'on that reading…'.सौन्दर्यवाले पक्ष में — अर्थात् उस पाठ पर जहाँ 'रूप' का अर्थ सौन्दर्य लिया जाता है
ādhikyamis sheer abundance — a great deal of itअधिकता, बहुतायत
atra — here; saundarya-pakṣe — on the beauty reading; bhāvaḥ — the sense; ādhikyam — is abundance.
atra — यहाँ; saundarya-pakṣe — सौन्दर्यवाले पक्ष में; bhāvaḥ — तात्पर्य; ādhikyam — अधिकता है।
Take the verse on its beauty side first. Then the sense is just quantity: a great abundance. He carries an immense load of charming beauty — nothing heavy about it.
यहाँ सौन्दर्यवाले पक्ष में तात्पर्य अधिकता का है। अर्थात् उस पाठ पर शब्द केवल 'बहुत अधिक' कहता है।
The word being weighed is bhāra in dhṛta-mugdha-rūpa-bhāraḥ. On this reading bhāra is not a 'load' someone struggles under at all; it only says 'a great deal of'.
जिस शब्द को यहाँ तौला जा रहा है वह 'धृत-मुग्ध-रूप-भारः' का 'भार' है। इस पाठ पर 'भार' का अर्थ वह बोझ नहीं जिसके नीचे कोई दबता हो; वह केवल 'बहुत अधिक' कहता है।

ivaas it were, just like marks the whole picture as a comparison, not a claim that Rūpa literally is a load.मानो — यह पूरे चित्र को उपमा बनाता है, यह नहीं कहता कि रूप सचमुच बोझ हैं
ity arthaḥthat is the meaningऐसा अर्थ है
sva-nāma-pakṣe — on the reading where rūpa is his own name; nijotsaṅga-kleśa-kṛt voḍhavyaḥ iva — he is like a thing that must be carried and that troubles the very lap holding it; ity arthaḥ — that is the meaning.
sva-nāma-pakṣe — अपने नामवाले पक्ष में; nijotsaṅga-kleśa-kṛt — जो अपनी गोद में क्लेश करनेवाला है; voḍhavyaḥ iva — मानो वहन करने योग्य हो; ity arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
Now the second reading, where rūpa is the poet's own name. There bhāra really is a load. Rūpa is like something that has to be carried — and that gives trouble to the very lap carrying it. That is the meaning. Jīva leaves both readings standing: abundance of beauty on one side, a burden borne on the other.
और अपने नामवाले पक्ष में अर्थ यह है — मानो कोई ऐसा भार हो जो गोद में क्लेश उपजाता है और जिसे उठाना पड़ता है। 'मानो' शब्द इसे उपमा भर रखता है।

sanātanī nityā tanūr mūrtir yasya sa śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ |
sanātanīthe verse's word sanātanī —सनातनी
nityāmeans everlasting, with no beginning and no endनित्य
tanūr mūrtiḥand mūrti here is his body, his form'तनु' अर्थात् मूर्ति, स्वरूप
yasya saḥso the whole word means 'the one who has such a form' the standard way of unpacking a bahuvrīhi — 'he whose X is such'.जिसकी ऐसी है, वह — बहुव्रीहि खोलने की यही रीति है
śrī-kṛṣṇaḥand that one is Śrī Kṛṣṇaश्रीकृष्ण
sanātanī — nityā — 'sanātanī' means everlasting; tanūr mūrtiḥ — 'mūrti' means body, form; yasya saḥ — he who has such a form; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ — is Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
sanātanī — सनातनी; nityā — अर्थात् नित्य; tanūr mūrtiḥ — तनु अर्थात् मूर्ति; yasya saḥ — जिसकी है, वह; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ — श्रीकृष्ण हैं।
Viśvanātha takes sanātana-mūrti apart word by word. Sanātanī means everlasting. Mūrti means body or form. Put together: the one whose form never ends. And that one, he says, is Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
'सनातनी' अर्थात् नित्य। 'तनु' अर्थात् मूर्ति। जिसकी मूर्ति नित्य है, वह श्रीकृष्ण हैं।

Read the other way, sanātana is not an adjective but a name. Then sanātana-mūrti means 'the one whose mūrti is called Sanātana' — that is Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmī. Both readings stay on the table: the same words bow to Kṛṣṇa and to Sanātana at once.
दूसरे पक्ष में — जिसकी मूर्ति 'सनातन' नामवाली है, वह श्रीसनातन गोस्वामी हैं।

katham-bhūtaḥ ? dhṛto mugdhasya ajñasya rūpasya mama rādhā-kṛṣṇa-prāpti-bhāraḥ yena saḥ |
katham-bhūtaḥ ?What is he like? — the commentator's standard hinge question; it exists only to pull the next adjective of the verse into place.कैसे हैं? — टीकाकार का यह चिर-परिचित प्रश्न केवल इसलिए है कि श्लोक का अगला विशेषण अपने स्थान पर आ जाए
dhṛtaḥhas been taken up, shoulderedधारण किया हुआ
mugdhasya ajñasyabelonging to the bewildered one — that is, to one who knows nothing here mugdha is read as ajña, 'ignorant', not as 'charming'; that choice is what makes this the Sanātana-facing reading.मुग्ध अर्थात् अज्ञ का — यहाँ 'मुग्ध' मनोहर नहीं, 'कुछ न जाननेवाला' पढ़ा गया है; इसी चुनाव से यह पाठ सनातन की ओर मुड़ता है
rūpasya mamaof me, Rūpa the poet names himself; both genitives run into bhāra — the burden that is me.रूप का, अर्थात् मुझ का — कवि अपना नाम ले रहा है, और दोनों षष्ठी 'भार' में जाकर मिलती हैं
rādhā-kṛṣṇa-prāpti-bhāraḥthe burden of getting him to reach Rādhā and Kṛṣṇaराधा-कृष्ण की प्राप्ति का भार
yena saḥhe by whom that burden has been shouldered — that is the man meantजिसके द्वारा धारण किया गया, वह
katham-bhūtaḥ — what sort is he?; dhṛtaḥ … bhāraḥ yena saḥ — he by whom the burden has been taken up; mugdhasya ajñasya rūpasya mama — the burden of me, Rūpa, bewildered and knowing nothing; rādhā-kṛṣṇa-prāpti-bhāraḥ — the burden of bringing me to Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.
katham-bhūtaḥ ? — कैसे हैं?; mugdhasya ajñasya rūpasya mama — मुग्ध अर्थात् अज्ञ, ऐसे रूप का, अर्थात् मुझ का; rādhā-kṛṣṇa-prāpti-bhāraḥ — राधा-कृष्ण की प्राप्ति का भार; dhṛtaḥ yena saḥ — जिसने धारण किया, वह।
What is he like? He is the one who has shouldered a burden — and Viśvanātha says exactly which burden: the burden of bringing bewildered, ignorant me, Rūpa, all the way to Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. So dhṛta-mugdha-rūpa-bhāraḥ here is not about beauty at all; it is one man taking responsibility for another man's destination.

sundarasyameans 'lovely, beautiful'अर्थात् सुन्दर का
sarasvatī-pakṣe'rthe — in the sense on the sarasvatī side; mugdhasya — 'mugdha'; sundarasya — means 'lovely'.
sarasvatī-pakṣe'rthe — सरस्वती-पक्षवाले अर्थ में; mugdhasya — 'मुग्ध' का; sundarasya — अर्थात् सुन्दर का।
And on the other option, mugdha does not mean 'ignorant' at all. It means 'lovely'. One word, two jobs — that is the whole engine of this verse.
सरस्वती-पक्षवाले अर्थ में — 'मुग्ध' अर्थात् सुन्दर।
Viśvanātha keeps the two senses of mugdha apart rather than blending them: ajña, 'knowing nothing', in the previous sentence, and sundara, 'lovely', here. He does not say which one to prefer, and the decode does not choose for him.
विश्वनाथ 'मुग्ध' के दोनों अर्थों को मिलाते नहीं, अलग-अलग रखते हैं — पिछले वाक्य में अज्ञ, अर्थात् कुछ न जाननेवाला, और यहाँ सुन्दर। वे यह नहीं कहते कि कौन-सा अर्थ लेना चाहिए, और यह विवरण भी उनकी ओर से चुनाव नहीं करता।
