sarvatra karuṇākhyasya rasasyaivopapādanāt |
bhaved rāmāyaṇādīnām anyathā duḥkha-hetutā ||
The verse — decoded
L1conclusion
sarvatra karuṇākhyasya rasasyaivopapādanāt |
sarvatraeverywhere [across the Rāmāyaṇa and the like]सर्वत्र, ऐसे सभी स्थलों में
karuṇākhyasya rasasyaof the rasa called karuṇā, that is, pathosकरुण नामक रस का
evaprecisely — it is this and nothing lesser eva restricts: what is served up is genuinely rasa, not mere sorrowही — जो प्रस्तुत होता है वह सचमुच रस है, केवल शोक नहीं
upapādanātbecause it is served up / brought home [to the audience] ablative of cause — the reason that grounds the whole claimक्योंकि उसी का उपपादन (सिद्ध करके प्रस्तुत करना) होता है
sarvatra — everywhere; karuṇākhyasya rasasya — of the rasa called karuṇā; eva — precisely; upapādanāt — because it is served up.
Everywhere in the Rāmāyaṇa and such works, it is precisely the rasa called karuṇā — pathos — that is being served up to the audience. That fact is the ground of the argument that follows.
L2conclusion
bhaved rāmāyaṇādīnām anyathā duḥkha-hetutā ||
anyathāotherwise — if karuṇā were not genuine rasaयदि ऐसा न मानें, तो अन्यथा
rāmāyaṇādīnāmfor the Rāmāyaṇa and the works like it genitive: the works to which the unwanted result would attachरामायण आदि ग्रन्थों का — जिनमें यह अनिष्ट परिणाम लग जाएगा
duḥkha-hetutāthe standing of being merely a cause of griefदुःख का हेतु होना, केवल कष्ट देने वाला बन जाना
bhavetwould follow optative marking the reductio — the absurd consequence of the contraryहो जाएगा — यह विधिलिङ् प्रसंग को असंगत दिखाकर खण्डन करता है
anyathā — otherwise; rāmāyaṇādīnām — of the Rāmāyaṇa etc.; duḥkha-hetutā — being merely a cause of grief; bhavet — would follow.
Otherwise — if karuṇā were not real rasa — the Rāmāyaṇa and works like it would be nothing but a cause of grief. Since they are instead relished, karuṇā must be genuine rasa. This is the vyatireka argument: prove the point by the absurdity of denying it.
The reasoning is vyatireka (proof by the contrary): grant that karuṇā is not rasa, and a beloved work like the Rāmāyaṇa collapses into mere pain — which no one accepts. So the assumption is false and karuṇā is rasa.

Now the author sets out his own position — that karuṇā is real rasa — and he does it by the negative route, vyatireka: arguing from the absurdity that would follow if it were false. This is the verse beginning 'sarvatra.'

pratikāṇḍaṁ bahutrety arthaḥ upapādanād vyañjanāt duḥkha-hetutā ity atra bhāvaka-bhakteṣv iti śeṣaḥ ||
pratikāṇḍaṁ bahutrain each kāṇḍa [of the Rāmāyaṇa], in many places — this unpacks 'everywhere'प्रत्येक काण्ड में, अनेक स्थलों पर
ity arthaḥthat is the sense [of sarvatra]ऐसा अर्थ है
upapādanād vyañjanāt'because it is served up' means: by vyañjanā, poetic suggestion glossing the mūla's upapādanāt — the serving-up works through suggestion, not plain statement'उपपादन' से अर्थात् व्यञ्जना (सूचना) के द्वारा — मूल के उपपादनात् की व्याख्या; प्रस्तुति स्पष्ट कथन से नहीं, व्यंजना से होती है
duḥkha-hetutā ity atrain the phrase 'a cause of grief'इस 'दुःख-हेतुता' पद में
bhāvaka-bhakteṣv iti śeṣaḥ'for the appreciative devotees (bhāvaka-bhaktas)' is the word to be supplied śeṣa — an ellipsis the reader must fill in to complete the sense'भावक-भक्तों में' — यह शेष (अध्याहार) है, जिसे पाठक को अर्थ पूरा करने के लिए जोड़ना है
sarvatra — pratikāṇḍam bahutra ity arthaḥ; upapādanāt — vyañjanāt; duḥkha-hetutā ity atra — bhāvaka-bhakteṣv iti śeṣaḥ.
'Everywhere' means: in each kāṇḍa of the Rāmāyaṇa, in many places. 'Because it is served up (upapādanāt)' means: by vyañjanā — poetic suggestion. And in the phrase 'a cause of grief,' supply the missing words 'for the appreciative devotees': the grief the verse warns of would fall on the refined-hearted devotees, were karuṇā not rasa.
bhāvaka-bhakta — a devotee of cultivated feeling, one equipped to relish rasa. Adding this filler shows the reductio is aimed at such connoisseurs: to them a non-rasa Rāmāyaṇa would be mere pain, which is why the contrary is absurd.
