Jīva takes up the verse's first word, 'kṛṣṇānvayāt', and says: here is what it means.

Jīva glosses 'connection with Kṛṣṇa' as 'Kṛṣṇa shining forth in the heart'. Because the emotions are made of that, the pleasant ones — elation and the rest — are obviously non-material happiness. But, he presses, the very same link makes the painful ones — dejection and the rest — also count as that same happiness.
The text spells harṣa (elation) as 'dharṣa' (dharṣādayaḥ) here and again in Viśvanātha's s1; harṣa is meant, as the mūla (L4) reads harṣa.

teṣāṁ duḥkha-mayatvena sphuraṇam tu tad-aprāpti-ādi-bhāvanā-rūpeṇa upādhinā upādānena eva jāyate — their arising as made-of-distress happens through the upādhi (the sense of not attaining Him) acting as material cause; kṛṣṇa-sphuraṇam tu tatra nimitta-mātram — while Kṛṣṇa's shining is there merely the efficient cause
Why do these emotions ever feel like distress, then? Jīva assigns two causes. The material cause (upādāna) is a limiting condition (upādhi): the devotee's own feeling that he has not yet reached Kṛṣṇa. That is what the 'pain' is made of. Kṛṣṇa's shining in the heart is only the efficient cause (nimitta) here — what triggers it, not what it is made of.
upādāna vs nimitta — material cause vs efficient cause: the clay of a pot (what it is made of) vs the potter (who makes it). The distress-flavor draws its substance from the sense of separation (upādhi/upādāna); Kṛṣṇa's presence merely occasions it (nimitta), so the distress is not intrinsic to the emotion.

For a devotee, reaching Kṛṣṇa is guaranteed to come. When it does, the material cause of the pain — the feeling of not having Him — drops away, and elation is fed instead. Jīva's example: hunger. Hunger feels like discomfort, but it is really the appetite that guarantees the joy of eating; the man is the eater, the hunger is the appetite, the meal is the coming happiness. Just so, dejection and the rest ultimately shine as happiness. That is why the verse says 'as-if distressful', not truly distressful.

Jīva backs this with the Bhāgavata's Eleventh Canto: knowledge of the lone self is sāttvic, knowledge full of distinctions is rājasic, dull materialistic knowledge is tāmasic — but knowledge fixed on the Lord is called nirguṇa, beyond the guṇas.
Why cited: Bhāgavata 11.25.24, adduced as scriptural proof that whatever is centered on Kṛṣṇa is nirguṇa — so the devotee's Kṛṣṇa-linked emotions are beyond the three modes, even when they look modal.

The granting 'satyam' concedes that the devotee really does feel distress and really does wish to be rid of it; what follows explains how that is compatible with the emotions being blissful, not a denial of the fact.

Here is the answer. When dejection or grief is present, the devotee knows it as distress only because of a limiting condition (upādhi) — his feeling that he has not yet reached Kṛṣṇa. So the 'distress' reading is aupādhika: it comes from that condition, not from the emotion itself.

An illustration. When the women of Vraja see Kṛṣṇa, tears of joy well up — but those tears blur their view of Him. So, even in the middle of that bliss, they curse the tears. The tears are the blissful emotion; the blurred sight is what makes them unwelcome; the curse is the wish to be rid of them. The bliss is real, yet it can still be rejected because it obstructs the enjoyment of Kṛṣṇa.
A dṛṣṭānta: tears born of joy, and themselves joyful, are still cursed because they hinder the very sight of Kṛṣṇa. It shows how a blissful state can be wished away without ceasing to be blissful.

Applying the illustration: exactly so, when a devotee is in dejection or grief, the ache of not having Kṛṣṇa makes him curse those emotions — even though they are made of bliss. He wants rid of them not because they are painful in themselves, but because they mark his separation from Kṛṣṇa.

taṁ rasaṁ tyaktum api na śaknotione cannot bring oneself to give up that juiceउस रस को त्याग भी नहीं पाता
evaṁ yathā tapta-ikṣu-carvaṇa-daśāyām — as when chewing heated sugarcane; ikṣu-rasasya uṣṇatā-anubhavena tyāga-icchā jāyate — feeling the juice's heat, a wish to spit it out arises; tasyāḥ mādhurya-anubhavena taṁ rasaṁ tyaktum api na śaknoti — but feeling its sweetness one cannot give it up
A second illustration. Chew sugarcane that has been heated: the juice feels hot, and the heat makes you want to spit it out — yet its sweetness is so good you cannot let it go. The heat is the distress-side of the emotion; the sweetness is its underlying bliss; the pull-and-tug is the devotee both wanting rid of dejection and clinging to it. Two experiences of one juice, at once.
A dṛṣṭānta pairing with the next sentences: the single juice is both hot (wants spitting out) and sweet (can't be spat out), just as one emotion is felt as distress yet held for its bliss. It sets up the 'hot vs cold' division of ānanda in s9-s10.

So Viśvanātha draws the lesson: bliss itself comes in two kinds — a hot bliss and a cold bliss.

Of the two: dejection and its kind are the hot bliss; elation and its kind are the cold bliss.

So the objection is answered. Because dejection and the rest are hot, the devotee wishes to be rid of them — that covers the 'distress' and the 'wish to give up'. But their sweetness keeps him from actually giving them up — that keeps them blissful. Both facts stand together, and the whole account is faultless.

Viśvanātha too quotes the Eleventh Canto: knowledge of the lone self is sāttvic, the distinction-ridden kind rājasic, the dull kind tāmasic — but knowledge fixed on the Lord is called nirguṇa, beyond the modes.
Why cited: Bhāgavata 11.25.24, adduced as scriptural proof that anything Kṛṣṇa-centered is nirguṇa — so the devotee's emotions, being Kṛṣṇa-linked, are beyond the three modes despite appearing modal.

An argument from the smaller case to the greater. No wonder the emotions of perfected devotees are beyond the guṇas — those emotions make even liberation look cheap. Consider: even a raw beginner's faith, the very first rung of sādhana-bhakti, is already beyond the guṇas. If the first step is transcendental, how much more the perfected devotee's feelings. And the Eleventh Skandha says exactly this:
