kāpy avyabhicarantī sā svādhārān sva-svarūpataḥ |
kāpia certain, indescribable [rati] — some special thing (kā api) beyond naming kā api; feminine, agreeing with rati in L2कोई एक (अनिर्वचनीय) — जो आगे L2 की रति के साथ स्त्रीलिंग में जुड़ती है
avyabhicarantīnever straying from, never abandoning present participle, fem., agreeing with sā ratiजो कभी विचलित नहीं होती, कभी नहीं छोड़ती (वर्तमान कृदन्त, रति का विशेषण)

sva-svarūpataḥby its own very nature ablative/adverbial in -taḥ = 'by way of its own form'अपने स्वरूप के द्वारा, अपने स्वरूप के अनुसार
sā kā api ratiḥ — that certain indescribable rati; sva-svarūpataḥ — by its own nature; svādhārān avyabhicarantī — never straying from its own supports, the devotees.
There is a certain rati, hard to put into words, that by its very nature never abandons its own abodes — the devotees in whom it lives. It stays with them and does not stray.
This is the lakṣaṇa (definition) verse of the sthāyi-bhāva, the standing emotion, opening the fifth laharī (2.5). The three mūla lines together give the definition; the illustration is not this verse but its terms.

ratir ātyantika-sthāyī bhāvo bhakta-jane’ khile |

bhāvaḥis the bhāva — the [standing] emotionभाव
bhakta-jane akhilein every devotee, in all devotee-folk without exception locative; akhila 'whole, entire' widens it to all devoteesसमस्त भक्तजनों में (सप्तमी; 'अखिल' शब्द इसे सब भक्तों तक फैला देता है)
ratiḥ — that rati; akhile bhakta-jane — in every single devotee; ātyantika-sthāyī bhāvaḥ [syāt] — is the utmost, permanently standing emotion.
That rati is the sthāyi-bhāva, the standing emotion in its final, unshakeable form. And it is so in every devotee without exception — this is the emotion that stays.
sthāyī 'standing / abiding' names the emotion that remains fixed as the ground-mood of a rasa, unlike the passing feelings (vyabhicāri-bhāvas) that come and go over it.

syur etasyā vinā-bhāvād bhāvāḥ sarve nirarthakāḥ
syuḥwould be optative plural, predicate of bhāvāḥ sarveहो जाएँ, हो जाते हैं (विधिलिङ्/विध्यर्थ बहुवचन, 'सब भाव' का विधेय)
vinā-bhāvātbecause of its absence — if this rati were not there ablative of reason: 'from the non-being of it'अनुपस्थिति के कारण, न होने से (पञ्चमी हेतु में)
bhāvāḥ sarveall the [other] emotionsसारे भाव
nirarthakāḥpointless, without purposeनिरर्थक, प्रयोजनहीन
etasyāḥ vinā-bhāvāt — because of the absence of this rati; sarve bhāvāḥ — all the other emotions; nirarthakāḥ syuḥ — would be pointless.
And without this rati, all the other emotions would be pointless. It is the standing love that gives every other feeling its meaning; take it away and they have nothing to serve.
This third line supplies the reason the rati counts as the sthāyin: the other bhāvas exist only to nourish it, so they lose all purpose in its absence.

Jīva restates the verse plainly: it is rati itself, by its own nature, never straying from the devotees who support it, that is the emotion given the name 'utmost-abiding' (ātyantika-sthāyin). He treats ātyantika-sthāyin as a title for this bhāva.

Jīva notes a variant: some texts read 'svādhārāt', in the ablative singular, instead of the accusative plural 'svādhārān'. He records the second reading without deciding between them.
Left as a suspended textual variant (vā pāṭhaḥ); Jīva does not resolve which reading is correct, so neither is preferred here.
