Viśvanātha lays the whole verse out in order. Those friends, their minds torn open by even a moment's separation from me, saw me who had gone off to look at the blossoming woods. Each one thought, 'I touched Kṛṣṇa first, before anyone!' — and in that 'me-first' spirit they reached out from a distance to touch me. So today they took their joy.
Viśvanātha unpacks ahaṁpūrvikā by supplying the very thought each friend has — 'I touched him first' — which is what drives the competitive reaching.
