L1definition
mānase nirvikalpatvaṁ śama ity abhidhīyate ||
mānasein the mind locative — the arena where this steadiness holdsमन में (जहाँ यह स्थिरता टिकती है)
nirvikalpatvaṁbeing free of wavering — settling on no shifting object of desireविकल्परहित होना — संकल्प-विकल्प से मुक्त निश्चलता
śama itithis is called "śama"'शम' यह (नाम)
abhidhīyateis named, is spoken of asकहा जाता है (कर्मवाच्य)
mānase — in the mind; nirvikalpatvaṁ — the state of no wavering; śama iti — as "śama"; abhidhīyate — is named.
When the mind stops wavering — when it no longer runs after shifting objects — that steadiness is what is called śama. This is the lakṣaṇa (definition) of śama, the sthāyi-bhāva that grounds śānta-rasa.
śama here is not mere calmness but the mind's fixed resting free of vikalpa (alternatives); it is the sthāyi-bhāva of śānta-rasa, the topic of this fifth laharī.

v
v[an isolated fragment in the source — a single stray akṣara, not a decodable pāda]'व' — केवल एक अक्षर (उद्धृत श्लोक का प्रथम पाद यहाँ इतने में ही सिमटा है)
v — (no construable content).
This line carries only the stray character "v" in the source and is not a decodable half-line. It opens the quoted verse (tathā coktam—) whose readable portion survives in the next line; the opening pāda appears to have dropped out of the source text.
Source anomaly: the first pāda of the cited verse under "tathā coktam—" is reduced to a single letter; flagged, not reconstructed.

ātmanaḥof the self — the self's own genitive qualifying svabhāvaḥआत्मा का (षष्ठी, स्वभावः का विशेषण)
kathyateis said, is spoken ofकहा जाता है (कर्मवाच्य)
so’trathat [natural state], here saḥ + atra; saḥ picks up svabhāvaḥ, atra = in this contextसः + अत्र — वह इस प्रसंग में (सः स्वभावः को पकड़ता है)
svabhāvaḥthe self's own natural conditionस्वभाव
atra — here; ātmanaḥ svabhāvaḥ — the self's own nature; saḥ asau — that very [state]; śama iti — as "śama"; kathyate — is said.
The self's own natural condition — that is what is here spoken of as śama. A quoted authority restating the definition: śama is the self resting in its own nature.
Why cited: adduced under "tathā coktam—" as scriptural support that śama is the self's own settled nature, backing the mūla definition in L1.

Jīva offers no comment on this verse — the note simply records that he left it unexplained.
A meta-remark, not a gloss: it registers the absence of Jīva's commentary on this unit rather than explaining the verse.

atha śāntākhyāṁ ratiṁ lakṣayan śamaṁ lakṣayitvā tad-upalakṣitāṁ lakṣayati ||
athanow — turning to the next topicअब (शम के पश्चात् अगला चरण)
śāntākhyāṁ ratiṁthe rati called "śānta" — the sthāyi-bhāva of the peaceful mood accusative, object of lakṣayan: what he ultimately means to define'शान्त' नामक रति को (जिसे अन्ततः लक्षित करना अभीष्ट है)
lakṣayanmeaning to define — with a view to defining present participle of purpose: the larger aim under which the next step fallsलक्षित करते हुए — यही वह बड़ा प्रयोजन है जिसके अन्तर्गत अगला चरण आता है (वर्तमान कृदन्त)
śamaṁ lakṣayitvāhaving first defined śama gerund: the prior step done before the main verbशम का लक्षण करके — मुख्य क्रिया से पूर्व का चरण
tad-upalakṣitāṁthe [rati] pointed to by that śama — identified by it accusative; tat = śama, the indicatorउससे (शम से) उपलक्षित रति को (तत् = शम, संकेतक)
lakṣayati[then] he defines [it]लक्षित करते हैं
atha — now; śāntākhyāṁ ratiṁ lakṣayan — meaning to define the rati called śānta; śamaṁ lakṣayitvā — having first defined śama; tat-upalakṣitāṁ — the rati that śama points to; lakṣayati — he defines.
Viśvanātha sets up the two steps. Rūpa's real target is śānta-rati, the sthāyi-bhāva. But he first defines śama; then he defines the rati that śama points to. So the sequence is: define śama, and through śama identify śānta-rati.
upalakṣita is a technical distinction. An upalakṣaṇa only points you to a thing without being part of what it is — like "the house with the crow on it": the crow locates the house but is no part of it, and may fly off. Contrast a viśeṣaṇa, "a blue lotus," where blue is part of the lotus's own character. Here śama is the crow, not the color: it flags śānta-rati and lets you find it, but śānta-rati's essence is the rati itself, not śama.
