The rati whose very nature is a special kind of śuddha-sattva (pure being) is called the primary rati, the mukhyā. This is the definition verse that opens the discussion of sthāyi-bhāva. It picks out the settled love directed at Kṛṣṇa himself as the chief type.
The lakṣaṇa of mukhyā rati. 'śuddha-sattva-viśeṣātmā' is lifted straight from the bhāva-definition at bha.ra.si. 1.3.1, as both Jīva and Viśvanātha point out below.

mukhyā api dvi-vidhā — the primary rati too is twofold; svārthā parārthā ca iti kīrtyate — proclaimed as svārthā and parārthā.
Even the primary rati itself is of two kinds. One is svārthā, which works for its own sake. The other is parārthā, which works for another's sake. The next lines and the cited verses spell out each.

Jīva ties this verse back to the earlier definition. The rati named here is the same one already defined at 1.3.1 as 'having a special śuddha-sattva nature, like a ray of the sun of prema.' So 'mukhyā rati' is not a new thing — it is the bhāva defined at the start of the book.

Viśvanātha gives the same back-reference as Jīva. The mukhyā rati here is the rati already defined at 1.3.1. He confirms the identity before moving to the two-fold split.

This verse defines the first kind. When contrary emotions press on it, this rati suffers pain and collapses. Because it cannot absorb what opposes it, it stays turned toward its own condition — so it is called svārthā, the rati that works for its own sake.

Here is the second kind. This rati holds itself back, keeps its own force in check, and accepts whatever mood arises — whether agreeable or opposed. Because it bends to serve another mood rather than assert itself, it is called parārthā, the rati that works for another's sake.

An analogy for why the one rati looks different in different devotees. The single rati takes on its particular flavor from the particular recipient who holds it — just as the one sun, when reflected, appears colored by the crystal or object it falls on. The devotee is the vessel; the rati is the sunlight; the varied flavors are the varied reflections. Jīva and Viśvanātha both warn just below that only the point of distinctness is meant, not every feature of a reflection.

Jīva sets the limit of the analogy. The comparison is not saying rati is literally a container, nor that it is literally a reflection. Only one point is intended: that it takes on a distinct character. Everything else in the image is scaffolding.
A viśeṣaṇa/upalakṣaṇa-style limit on a dṛṣṭānta. In 'a blue lotus' the blue is part of what the thing is; in 'the house with the crow on it' the crow only helps you find the house. Here vessel-ness and reflection-ness are the crow — they only carry you to the one intended point, that rati takes on distinctness.

Jīva's takeaway: the five are not five separate ratis. It is one rati, and only the differing qualifiers — śuddhā, prīti, and so on — give it different standings and different names. The distinctness comes from the recipient, not from the rati becoming many.

Viśvanātha explains parārthā with a homely picture. A king who wants to promote a servant will sometimes step down and put himself in the lesser role, so as to lift the servant up. The king is the rati; his self-lowering is the 'shrinking back'; the servant is the mood being favored.

Just so, rati holds its own force back and takes up whatever mood comes, agreeable or contrary, to serve it. That self-restraining, mood-favoring rati is the parārthā. This applies the king-analogy directly to the definition given in the verse above.

Viśvanātha unfolds the sun-analogy in full. The one sun shows a bright reflection in a clear crystal and a duller one in a cloudy object — the reflection matches the surface. In the same way, the one rati takes on a distinct character according to the devotee who holds it. The sun is rati; the crystal or cloudy object is the devotee-vessel; the clearer or dimmer reflection is the distinct flavor the rati wears in each devotee.

vaiśiṣṭya-aṁśe eva dṛṣṭāntaḥthe analogy holds only in the aspect of distinctness eva restricts to the one shared pointकेवल वैशिष्ट्य वाले अंश में ही दृष्टान्त है ('एव' से एक ही सामान्य बिन्दु तक सीमित)
na tu sarva-aṁśenanot in every aspect tu marks the exclusionसभी अंशों से नहीं ('तु' से बहिष्कार दिखाता है)
iti jñeyamthis should be understoodऐसा जानना चाहिए
atra mukhya-rateḥ pratibimba-rūpatvaṁ na sambhavati — reflectedness cannot belong to mukhyā rati; ataḥ vaiśiṣṭyāṁśe eva dṛṣṭāntaḥ na tu sarvāṁśena — so the analogy applies only in the distinctness-aspect, not in all; iti jñeyam — so it should be known.
Viśvanātha caps the analogy with the same limit Jīva gave. Rati cannot actually be a reflection of anything, so the sun-image is not to be pressed all the way. It holds in one point only — that rati takes on a distinct character — and nowhere else.
The dṛṣṭānta is offered in support, but it maps on one point alone. Like pointing out 'the house with the crow on it' — the crow (reflectedness) only helps you locate the intended point (distinctness); it is no part of what rati is. Viśvanātha and Jīva agree on this restriction.

tat-tad-bhakta-bhedena rateḥ eva sthiti-bhedaḥ nāma-bhedaḥ ca bhavati — by the difference of the respective devotees, it is the one rati that gets a difference of state and name; iti phalitārthaḥ — this is the upshot.
Viśvanātha's final upshot, matching Jīva's: it is one and the same rati throughout. According to the differing devotees who hold it, that single rati simply takes on different standings and different names — śuddhā, prīti, sakhya, vātsalya, priyatā. The variety is in the vessels, not in the rati.
