nanu gariṣṭhādau vikṣepo mā bhūn nāma, vajre tu dravatā kadācin nāsty eva, sā ca sthāyi-mātra-kṛtety uktaṁ, tarhi tat kathaṁ bhakta-cittatvena gaṇyate ? tatrāha—kintv iti |
gariṣṭhādau vikṣepo mā bhūn nāmagrant that in the very grave, sober hearts and the like there is no agitation locative gariṣṭhādau = 'in the case of…'; mā bhūt nāma is concessive, 'let it indeed not be'गरिष्ठ (अत्यन्त गम्भीर) आदि के विषय में विक्षोभ भले न हो — यह मान भी लें (सप्तमी 'के विषय में'; 'मा भूत् नाम' स्वीकारार्थक)
vajre tu dravatā kadācin nāsty evabut in a diamond there is never any melting at all tu marks the harder case; eva = 'not at all'परन्तु वज्र (हीरे) में द्रवता तो कभी होती ही नहीं ('तु' कठिनतर स्थिति दिखाता है; 'एव' = बिलकुल नहीं)
sā ca sthāyi-mātra-kṛtā iti uktamand that melting, it was said, is produced by the sthāyī alone sā resumes dravatā; mātra = 'and nothing else'और वह (द्रवता) केवल स्थायी से ही उत्पन्न होती है — ऐसा कहा गया ('सा' द्रवता को पकड़ता है; 'मात्र' = और किसी से नहीं)
tarhi tat kathaṁ bhakta-cittatvena gaṇyatethen how is such [a diamond-hard mind] to be counted as a devotee's mind?
tatra āha—kintv itito answer this he speaks the verse beginning 'kintu'इस पर (ग्रन्थकार) कहते हैं — 'किन्तु' इत्यादि से
nanu — objection; gariṣṭhādau vikṣepaḥ mā bhūt nāma — grant no agitation in the grave hearts; vajre tu dravatā kadācit na asti eva — but a diamond never melts; sā ca sthāyi-mātra-kṛtā iti uktam — and melting was said to be caused by the sthāyī alone; tarhi tat kathaṁ bhakta-cittatvena gaṇyate — so how is that counted a devotee's mind?; tatra āha—kintv iti — to this he replies with 'kintu'.
One might object: fine, grant that the very grave, sober hearts feel no stirring. But a diamond never melts at all — and melting, we were told, is caused by the sthāyī alone. So how could a diamond-hard heart ever be counted as a devotee's heart? To settle this he speaks the verse beginning 'kintu.'
Two hard cases are set up: the gariṣṭha (the heaviest, most sober mind) and the vajra/hīraka (the diamond), the standard image for a heart that nothing softens.

bhāvo’tra mukhyatayā sthāyī vivakṣitaḥ prasaṅgād anyaś ca |
bhāvaḥ atra mukhyatayā sthāyī vivakṣitaḥ'bhāva' here is meant primarily as the sthāyī, the stable emotionयहाँ 'भाव' शब्द से मुख्यतया स्थायी भाव विवक्षित है
prasaṅgād anyaś caand, by extension, the other kind too prasaṅgāt = 'incidentally, as it comes up'और प्रसंगवश (प्रसंग आने पर) अन्य भाव भी
bhāvaḥ atra — the word bhāva here; mukhyatayā sthāyī vivakṣitaḥ — is intended primarily as the sthāyī; prasaṅgāt anyaś ca — and incidentally the other as well.
By 'bhāva' he means chiefly the sthāyī, the stable emotion. And, as the topic allows, the other kind is included too.
In this laharī 'the other' is the vyabhicāri (passing) bhāva — the emotion whose agitating of the mind the whole chapter is defining.

He explains the phrase 'in every possible way': even a diamond has it in it to melt, once a special herb is applied. So no heart is too hard for bhāva to stir.
