citte gariṣṭhe gambhīre mahiṣṭhe karkaśādike |
citte gariṣṭhewhen the heart is very heavy (grave, weighty) locative absolute; this whole locative clause sets the condition governing L1-L2जब चित्त गुरुतर (अत्यन्त गम्भीर, भारी) हो — इस पूरे वाक्यांश से आगे की स्थिति बँधती है
karkaśādikeand hard, and the likeऔर जब वह कठोर आदि स्वभाव वाला हो
citte gariṣṭhe — when the heart is very heavy; gambhīre — deep; mahiṣṭhe — very great; karkaśa-ādike — hard and so on
First case: a heart that is heavy, deep, vast, and hard. These four kinds of heart set the condition for the next line.
L1-L2 and L3-L4 are the two closing verses (2.4.258-259) of the vyabhicāri (sañcāri) laharī, stating a general principle: whether a bhāva shows outwardly depends not on how strong it is but on the make of the heart it arises in.

Even when these bhāvas have arisen fully, people do not see them clearly. In a heavy, deep, hard heart the feeling is complete inside but gives no outward sign.

citte laghiṣṭhe cottāne kṣodiṣṭhe komalādike |
citte laghiṣṭhewhen the heart is very light locative absolute again, setting the opposite condition for L3-L4जब चित्त अत्यन्त हल्का हो — यहाँ इसके विपरीत स्थिति बँधती है

Opposite case: a heart that is light, shallow, small, and soft. These four make up the second kind of heart.

Jīva answers a puzzle: why lump 'hard' (karkaśa), a bad trait, in with 'grave, deep, great,' which are good traits? Because for the one thing that matters here — whether feeling can visibly stir such a heart — all four behave the same way: none of them lets the bhāva show. Sameness of effect, not sameness of value, is why they are grouped.
