L1definition

vilayaḥthe melting-away, the dissolutionलय हो जाना, शान्त पड़ जाना
śāntiḥis śānti (the settling, the calming)'शान्ति' (नामक व्यभिचारी भाव)
ucyateis what is calledकहा जाता है
atyārūḍhasya bhāvasya — of an emotion that has risen too high; vilayaḥ — the dissolution; śāntiḥ ucyate — is called śānti.
atyārūḍhasya — जो पराकाष्ठा से आगे चढ़ चुका है, उस; bhāvasya — भाव का; vilayaḥ — लय; śāntiḥ — शान्ति; ucyate — कहा जाता है।
Now the lakṣaṇa of śānti. When a feeling has climbed to a pitch it cannot hold, it dissolves. That melting-away of the over-risen emotion is what we call śānti.
जो भाव अपने चरम से भी आगे बढ़ चुका हो, उसका लय हो जाना 'शान्ति' कहलाता है।
śānti here is the vyabhicāri-bhāva 'settling / quieting', not liberation; it names the collapse of an emotion once it has overshot its own peak.

vidhurita-vadanāḥ — faces stricken; vidūna-bhāsaḥ — luster faded — [the boys, described further below].
vidhurita-vadanā — व्याकुल मुख वाले; vidūna-bhāsaḥ — म्लान कान्ति वाले।
An udāharaṇa. The Vraja boys have lost Kṛṣṇa: their faces are wrung with grief, their bright glow drained away.
उनके मुख व्याकुल हो उठे और उनकी कान्ति म्लान पड़ गई।
An udāharaṇa of śānti as defined in L1 (2.4.247) — here specifically the dissolution of viṣāda (despondence), as L6 states: the boys' sorrow at not finding Kṛṣṇa melts away the instant his flute is heard.
यह L1 (2.4.247) में परिभाषित शान्ति का उदाहरण है — यहाँ विशेष रूप से विषाद का लय; जैसा L6 कहता है, कृष्ण को न पाने का बालकों का शोक मुरली सुनते ही घुल जाता है।

tam agha-haram — उस अघ-हारी को; gahane — घने वन में; gaveṣayantaḥ — खोजते हुए।
They are hunting for him, the slayer of Agha, deep in the forest thicket.
उस अघ-हारी कृष्ण को घने वन में खोजते हुए,
agha-hara names Kṛṣṇa by the killing of the demon Agha, framing the boys as his own companions from that pastime.
'अघ-हर' कृष्ण को अघासुर के वध से नामांकित करता है, जो बालकों को उसी लीला का सहचर बताता है।

vraja-śiśavaḥ — the Vraja boys; pulaka-ujjvalāḥ babhūvuḥ — became radiant with horripilation.
vraja-śiśavaḥ — व्रज के बालक; pulaka-ujjvalāḥ — रोमांच से उज्ज्वल; babhūvuḥ — हो गए।
And at once the boys of Vraja are aglow, their hair standing on end with joy — the grief has simply melted. That switch from despondence to thrill is the śānti.
व्रज के बालक रोमांच से उज्ज्वल हो उठे।

atrahere, in this verseयहाँ
viṣāda-śāntiḥthe śānti (dissolution) of viṣāda — of despondenceविषाद की शान्ति (उसका लय) है
atra — here; viṣāda-śāntiḥ — the settling of despondence.
atra — यहाँ; viṣāda-śāntiḥ — विषाद की शान्ति।
Here the emotion that dissolves is viṣāda, despondence: the boys' grief at losing Kṛṣṇa breaks up the moment his flute reaches them.
यहाँ विषाद की शान्ति (उसका लय) दिखाई गई है।

gaveṣayanto mārgayantaḥ |
gaveṣayantaḥthe verse-word 'searching''खोजते हुए' का अर्थ है
mārgayantaḥmeans: seeking, hunting forढूँढते हुए
gaveṣayantaḥ — mārgayantaḥ — 'searching' means 'seeking out'.
gaveṣayantaḥ — खोजते हुए; mārgayantaḥ — ढूँढते हुए।
Jīva glosses the rare verb: gaveṣayantaḥ just means mārgayantaḥ, 'searching, seeking him out.'
'गवेषयन्तः' का अर्थ है ढूँढते हुए।

mṛdu-kala ity ādiḥ pāṭhaḥ — the reading beginning 'mṛdu-kala…'; eva iṣṭaḥ — is precisely the one accepted.
mṛdu-kala ity ādiḥ — 'मृदु-कल' इत्यादि; eva — ही; pāṭhaḥ iṣṭaḥ — अभीष्ट पाठ।
Jīva settles the text: the line as read here, beginning mṛdu-kala-muralīm, is the preferred reading — against the variant he takes up next.
'मृदु-कल' इत्यादि रूप वाला पाठ ही यहाँ अभीष्ट है।
A pāṭha (textual-variant) note; the rival reading is the murali-kalam… version discussed in s4-s5.
यह पाठ-भेद (पाठान्तर) की टिप्पणी है; प्रतिपक्षी पाठ 'मुरलि-कलम्…' वाला है, जिसकी चर्चा s4-s5 में है।

श्री मुकुन्ददास भी 'गवेषयन्तः' का अर्थ 'ढूँढते हुए' करते हैं।

“murali-kalam athākalayya śaile” ity atra murali-śabdaḥ kṛd-i-kārāntaḥ |
“murali-kalam athākalayya śaile” iti atrain the variant line 'murali-kalam athākalayya śaile'"मुरलि-कलम् अथाकलय्य शैले" इस पाठ में
murali-śabdaḥthe word murali (with a short final i)'मुरलि' शब्द
kṛt-i-kāra-antaḥends in an i-vowel supplied by a kṛt (primary) affixकृत्-प्रत्यय से आए हुए इकार वाला (इकारान्त) है
'murali-kalam…' iti atra — in that variant reading; murali-śabdaḥ — the word murali; kṛt-i-kāra-antaḥ — ends in a kṛt-derived short i.
“murali-kalam athākalayya śaile” iti atra — इस पाठ में; murali-śabdaḥ — 'मुरलि' शब्द; kṛt-i-kāra-antaḥ — कृत्-इकारान्त।
Turning to the variant reading 'murali-kalam athākalayya śaile', Jīva notes that there the word is murali with a short final i — an i supplied by a primary (kṛt) affix.
"मुरलि-कलम् अथाकलय्य शैले" इस पाठ में 'मुरलि' शब्द का अन्तिम इकार कृत्-प्रत्यय से आया हुआ इकारान्त है।
kṛt-i-kārānta: the stem's final -i is not part of a root but added by a kṛt (primary derivational) suffix; this sets up the grammatical point in s5 for why it stays short.
कृत्-इकारान्त का अर्थ — शब्द का अन्तिम इकार धातु का अंग नहीं, अपितु कृत् (प्राथमिक व्युत्पादक) प्रत्यय से जोड़ा गया है; यही s5 में यह व्याकरण-बिन्दु सिद्ध करता है कि वह इकार ह्रस्व ही रहता है।
s5conclusion
ataḥ kṛd-i-kārād aktin iti ṅīb-abhāvo’pi ||
ataḥtherefore, on that groundइसलिए
kṛt-i-kārāt aktin itiby the rule 'after a kṛt-derived i comes aktin''कृत्-इकार से अक्तिन्' इस नियम के अनुसार
ṅīp-abhāvaḥthere is no ṅīp — no feminine long-ī suffix addedङीप् (स्त्रीप्रत्यय) का अभाव भी सिद्ध होता है
apiand so, accordingly (this too follows)भी
ataḥ — therefore; kṛt-i-kārāt aktin iti — by the aktin rule after a kṛt-i; ṅīp-abhāvaḥ api — there is likewise no ṅīp.
ataḥ — इसलिए; kṛt-i-kārāt aktin iti — 'कृत्-इकार से अक्तिन्' इस अनुसार; ṅīp-abhāvaḥ — ङीप् का अभाव; api — भी।
So the short i is correct: because the i is kṛt-derived (rule aktin), the feminine ṅī that would lengthen it to muralī is not added. The form stays murali. Jīva thus defends the variant as grammatical, even while preferring the mṛdu-kala reading.
इसलिए 'कृत्-इकार से अक्तिन्' इस नियम के अनुसार ङीप् (स्त्रीप्रत्यय) का अभाव भी सिद्ध हो जाता है, अतः ह्रस्व इकार वाला 'मुरलि' रूप शुद्ध है।
ṅīp is the feminine suffix that would make muralī; Jīva shows the aktin-formed stem blocks it, so murali (short i) is well-formed.
ङीप् वह स्त्रीप्रत्यय है जो 'मुरली' रूप बना देता; जीव दिखाते हैं कि अक्तिन् से बना अंग उसे रोक देता है, अतः ह्रस्व इकार वाला 'मुरलि' साधु रूप है।

Viśvanātha reads the verse plainly: the Vraja boys are Kṛṣṇa's own playmates. Searching for him, sorrow-faced and drained of luster, the moment they hear his flute they light up, hair bristling with joy.
श्रीकृष्ण के सखा व्रज के बालक, कृष्ण को खोजते-ढूँढते हुए, दुःखी मुख और म्लान कान्ति वाले हो गए थे; किन्तु मुरली सुनते ही रोमांच से उज्ज्वल हो उठे।
