vilasantam avekṣya devakī
vilasantam[her son] as he played, sporting accusative present participle qualifying sutam in L2 — the object of avekṣyaक्रीड़ा करते हुए (उस पुत्र को) — L2 के सुत का विशेषण, अवेक्ष्य का कर्म
avekṣyaon looking at, having caught sight of gerund; the seeing that triggers both tearsदेखकर — यही देखना दोनों प्रकार के आँसुओं का हेतु बनता है
devakīDevakī — the one who acts (subject)देवकी ने
devakī — Devakī; vilasantam — [her son] sporting; avekṣya — on seeing.
Devakī catches sight of her son at play in front of her. That one glance is what sets off everything in the verse — both the tears of joy and, once her eye moves on, the tears of fear.
An udāharaṇa illustrating the sandhi (blend) of harṣa (joy) and viṣāda (despondency) that arise from different causes — bhinna-hetuja, as the lead-in says (tatra bhinna-hetujayoḥ, yathā). The sandhi of two vyabhicāri / sañcāri bhāvas is the topic of this fourth wave (caturtha-laharī, 2.4); the mūla itself names the pair at L5 (atra harṣa-viṣādayoḥ sandhiḥ).

sutam utphulla-vilocanaṁ puraḥ |
sutam[her] son — the one she sees (object)पुत्र को
utphulla-vilocanamwide-eyed, his eyes fully open accusative, describing sutam; utphulla = blossomed, fully openedखिली हुई (पूरी खुली) आँखों वाले — सुत का विशेषण
puraḥin front of her, right before her eyesसामने
puraḥ — before her; utphulla-vilocanam sutam — her wide-eyed son.
Her son stands right in front of her, his eyes wide open. It is the sight of Kṛṣṇa himself, up close, that fills her with joy.

malla-maṇḍalīmthe ring of wrestlers, the troop of prizefighters accusative, second object of avekṣya from L1मल्लों के समूह को — L1 के अवेक्ष्य का दूसरा कर्म
prabalām api malla-maṇḍalīm — and the mighty ring of wrestlers.
But her eye also takes in the ring of wrestlers — and a fearsome, powerful band it is. Same act of looking, a very different object: this is the cause of the fear that runs alongside the joy.

himam uṣṇaṁ ca jalamwater both cold and hot himam and uṣṇam both qualify jalam; ca ties the two together — the whole point of the verseठंडा और गरम जल — हिम और उष्ण दोनों जल के विशेषण, 'च' दोनों को जोड़ता है : यही श्लोक का सार है
dṛśoḥin her two eyes genitive/locative dual of dṛś; the eyes as the seat of the tearsदोनों आँखों में — आँसुओं का स्थान
dadheshe held, she let well up 3rd-sg perfect ātmanepada of dhā; one verb governs both watersधारण किया — एक ही क्रिया दोनों जलों को चलाती है
dṛśoḥ — in her eyes; himam uṣṇaṁ ca jalam — water both cold and hot; dadhe — she held.
In her eyes she holds water that is both cold and hot at once. Cold tears of joy at seeing Kṛṣṇa, hot tears of fear at the wrestlers — and both stand together in the same eyes. That single line is the whole picture of the blend.

atrahere — in this verseयहाँ (इस उदाहरण में)
harṣa-viṣādayoḥof joy and despondency genitive dual naming the two bhāvas that meetहर्ष और विषाद का — मिलने वाले दोनों भावों को नाम देती षष्ठी
sandhiḥ[there is] a junction, a blendingसन्धि (मेल)
atra — here; harṣa-viṣādayoḥ — of joy and despondency; sandhiḥ — [is] the junction.
Rūpa's own tag: here we have the sandhi — the meeting-point — of joy and despondency. This names the udāharaṇa: the two bhāvas do not replace each other but stand joined, each from its own cause.
A structural label in the author's voice, not part of the scene. sandhi is the technical name for two bhāvas meeting; because the joy and the fear here spring from two different sights, this is the bhinna-hetuja (‘different-caused’) variety promised in the lead-in.

Jīva notes a variant text. In place of ‘sutam utphulla-vilocanam’ (her wide-eyed son), some copies read ‘gaja-danta-sphurad-aṁsam aṅgajam’ — her offspring whose shoulder gleamed with the elephant’s tusk, recalling Kṛṣṇa felling Kuvalayāpīḍa and shouldering its tusk into the arena. He simply records both readings; he does not decide between them.
A pāṭhāntara (variant reading) recorded by Jīva, not a suspended alternative of meaning. The tusk-on-shoulder image alludes to Kṛṣṇa killing the elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa at the gate of Kaṁsa’s arena.

prathama-pāṭhe tubut on the first (main) reading tu contrasts with the variant of s1; prathama-pāṭha = the ‘utphulla-vilocanam’ textपरन्तु प्रथम पाठ में — 'तु' शब्द s1 के पाठान्तर से भेद करता है; प्रथम पाठ = 'उत्फुल्ल-विलोचनम्' वाला
tasyāḥ aiśvarya-jñānasya hi upodvalakamfor it reinforces her awareness of his majesty upodvalaka = corroborating, propping up; hi = for; aiśvarya-jñāna = knowing Kṛṣṇa’s divine greatnessक्योंकि उस ऐश्वर्य-ज्ञान का पोषक — 'हि' कारण दिखाता है; ऐश्वर्य-ज्ञान = कृष्ण की दिव्य महत्ता का बोध
utphulla-vilocanatvamthe fact of [his] wide-open eyesखिली आँखों वाला होना
harṣāya syāt iti samādheyamwould work toward the joy — so it is to be resolved samādheyam = this is the samādhāna, the resolution of the difficultyहर्ष के लिए होगा — यही समाधान (कठिनाई का निराकरण) है
prathama-pāṭhe tu — on the main reading; utphulla-vilocanatvam — the wide-open-eyedness; tasyāḥ aiśvarya-jñānasya hi upodvalakam — reinforcing her knowledge of his majesty; harṣāya syāt — works toward the joy; iti samādheyam — thus it is resolved.
Jīva resolves how the joy is grounded. On the main reading (‘wide-eyed son’), Kṛṣṇa’s wide-open eyes strengthen Devakī’s awareness of who he really is — her sense of his aiśvarya, his divine greatness. That heightened awareness is what feeds the joy. So the detail that could look like a mere physical feature is doing argumentative work: it props up the harṣa. This is his samādhāna, his answer to how the joy gets its force.
aiśvarya-jñāna = the awareness of Kṛṣṇa’s divine majesty (as against pure mother-affection); Jīva makes the wide-eyed look the thing that strengthens it, and through it the joy.

Viśvanātha reads the cold tears: they arose from the bliss of seeing Kṛṣṇa, and Devakī held that cold water in her eyes. He fixes the cause of the cold water as joy.

Viśvanātha closes with the principle the whole gloss rests on: it is commonly accepted that tears born of joy run cold and tears born of grief run hot. That accepted fact is what lets him split Devakī’s cold and hot water cleanly between her joy and her fear — and so read the verse’s single line of ‘cold-and-hot water’ as the very sandhi of harṣa and viṣāda.
