tatra vara it jātyaikatvam |
tatrathere, in the verseवहाँ (उन दोनों भेदों में)
varaḥ itithe word 'vara' — the fact that it stands in the singular'वर' यह पद
jāty-aikatvamis a generic singular — one number standing for the whole class, not for a single individual jāti-ekatvam: 'oneness by class', the grammarians' generic singularजाति की एकता को (सूचित करता है) — अर्थात् एकवचन पूरी जाति के लिए है
tatra — there; varaḥ iti — the singular word 'vara'; jāty-aikatvam — is a generic singular (singular for the whole class).
Jīva explains why Rūpa writes 'vara' in the singular. It is a generic singular: the one word stands for the entire class of superior helper-moods, not for one particular helper.
jāty-aikatvam (jāti = class, ekatvam = singleness): the grammarians' 'generic singular', where a singular noun names the whole kind — as 'the tiger is fierce' means all tigers, not one.

Jīva points forward to the coming definition-verse for what 'vara' means. A helper-mood that becomes a limb of two rasas at once is the one called vara. He tells us to take the term in that sense.
Why cited: cited to fix the definition of vara — the helper that serves two rasas at once — by quoting forward to 2.4.213.

And this understanding of vara is to be read alongside the definition of avara, the lesser helper, which Rūpa will give further on. The two definitions are meant to be taken together.
