asau pāṇi-sparśo madhura-masṛṇaḥ kasya vijayī
asau pāṇi-sparśaḥthis touch of a handयह हाथ का स्पर्श
madhura-masṛṇaḥsweet and soft dvandva describing the touch — 'sweet' (delightful by nature) and 'soft' (smooth to the skin), the two qualities the commentators gloss one by oneमधुर (स्वभाव से ही आनन्ददायी) और मसृण (त्वचा से कोमल) — दोनों गुणों वाला
kasya vijayīwhose is it — this all-conquering touch? kasya (gen.) 'of whom?'; vijayin, nom. predicate — 'triumphant, victorious', i.e. it overpowers herकिसका है? — जो (मुझ पर) विजयी हो गया, अर्थात् मुझे अभिभूत कर देता है
asau pāṇi-sparśaḥ — this touch of a hand; madhura-masṛṇaḥ — sweet and soft; kasya vijayī — whose all-conquering touch is it?
asau pāṇi-sparśaḥ — यह हाथ का स्पर्श; madhura-masṛṇaḥ — मधुर और कोमल; kasya vijayī — किसका है, जो (मुझ पर) विजयी हुआ।
Whose hand-touch is this — sweet, soft, and all-conquering? Rādhikā, just come out of her swoon, asks aloud who it was whose touch overpowered her so.
यह हाथ का स्पर्श मधुर भी है और कोमल भी। यह किसका है, जिसने मुझे इस प्रकार अभिभूत कर दिया?
An udāharaṇa illustrating mūrcchā, the swoon (a vyabhicāri-bhāva of 2.4), aroused here by touch — the lead-in reads 'sparśena, yathā—' ('by touch, as in the following').
यह मूर्च्छा (2.4 का एक व्यभिचारी-भाव) को दिखाने वाला उदाहरण है, जो यहाँ स्पर्श से जागा है — आगे की पंक्ति 'sparśena, yathā—' ('स्पर्श से, जैसे कि आगे') यही कहती है।

viśīryantyāḥ saura-pulina-vanam ālokya mama yaḥ |
viśīryantyāḥof me, who was falling to pieces present participle, gen. sg. agreeing with mama — 'breaking apart' inwardly; the swoon is dissolving herजो भीतर से टूट रही थी (उस मुझको) — मूर्च्छा उसे भीतर से बिखेर रही थी
saura-pulina-vanamthe grove on the Sun-daughter's bank — the wood on the Yamunā's shore saura = 'the Sun's' → Yamunā (Sūrya's daughter); Viśvanātha glosses it yamunā-pulina-vanamसूर्य की (पुत्री यमुना) के तट का उपवन; विश्वनाथ इसे यमुना-पुलिन-वन कहते हैं
ālokyaon seeing gerund — sight of the old trysting-grove is what triggered the swoonदेखकर — पुराने विहार-स्थल का दर्शन ही मूर्च्छा का कारण बना
mama yaḥwhich touch, of me yaḥ (nom.) picks up pāṇi-sparśaḥ, carried into L3–L4; mama (gen.) hooks to viśīryantyāḥ and mūrcchāmमेरा जो (स्पर्श) — 'यः' पाणि-स्पर्श को उठाता है, 'मम' विशीर्यन्ती और मूर्च्छा से जुड़ता है
saura-pulina-vanam — the grove on the Yamunā's bank; ālokya — on seeing which; viśīryantyāḥ mama — of me, falling to pieces; yaḥ — which touch…
saura-pulina-vanam ālokya — यमुना-तट के उपवन को देखकर; viśīryantyāḥ mama — भीतर से बिखरती हुई मुझ (राधा) का; yaḥ — जो (स्पर्श)।
On seeing the grove on the Yamunā's shore — where they had played before — I began to break apart inside. And the touch that then took hold of me…
यमुना-तट के उस उपवन को देखकर मैं भीतर ही भीतर टूटने लगी। मेरा जो यह स्पर्श है —
saura = 'belonging to the Sun (Sūrya)'; the Yamunā is Sūrya's daughter, so saura-pulina = the Yamunā's bank.
'saura' का अर्थ है 'सूर्य का'; यमुना सूर्य की पुत्री हैं, अतः 'saura-pulina' का तात्पर्य यमुना का तट है।

durantām uddhūya prasabham abhito vaiśasa-mayīṁ
durantāmthe unendurable one — a swoon with no way out acc. sg., agreeing with mūrcchām in L4; dur-anta = 'hard to get past'जिसका पार पाना कठिन है — ऐसी (मूर्च्छा को); L4 की मूर्च्छा का विशेषण
uddhūyahaving shaken off gerund — the touch's first act: it flings the calamitous swoon awayझटककर हटा देता है — स्पर्श का पहला कार्य यही है कि वह उस विपत्तिमयी मूर्च्छा को उखाड़ फेंकता है
prasabhamforcibly, by main force adverb — the shaking-off is violent, not gentleबलपूर्वक — यह झटकना कोमल नहीं, प्रचण्ड है
abhitaḥon every side, completely adverb — no corner of the swoon is leftचारों ओर से — मूर्च्छा का कोई कोना शेष नहीं रहता
vaiśasa-mayīmmade all of calamity — a swoon that was sheer disaster acc. sg. with mūrcchām; vaiśasa = ruin, agony; Viśvanātha glosses vipatti-mayīmनाश और वेदना से भरी हुई (उस मूर्च्छा को); विश्वनाथ इसे विपत्तिमयी कहते हैं
durantām vaiśasa-mayīm (mūrcchām) — the unendurable swoon made all of calamity; prasabham abhitaḥ uddhūya — forcibly and utterly having shaken it off…
durantām vaiśasa-mayīm (mūrcchām) — दुरन्त, विपत्ति से भरी (मूर्च्छा को); prasabham abhitaḥ uddhūya — बलपूर्वक, चारों ओर से झटककर।
That touch forcibly shook off, on every side, my swoon of sheer misery — the one there was no getting out of.
वह स्पर्श उस दुस्तर और विपत्ति से भरी मूर्च्छा को बलपूर्वक, चारों ओर से झटककर हटा देता है।
durantām, vaiśasa-mayīm and (L4) mūrcchām all agree — one accusative object: the calamitous first swoon that the touch removes.
'durantām', 'vaiśasa-mayīm' और (L4 की) 'mūrcchām' — तीनों एक ही द्वितीया-कर्म का वर्णन करते हैं: वही विपत्तिमयी पहली मूर्च्छा, जिसे स्पर्श हटा देता है।

drutaṁ mūrcchām antaḥ sakhi sukha-mayīṁ pallavayati ||
drutamswiftly, in a flash adverb — the change from one swoon to the other is instantतुरन्त — एक मूर्च्छा से दूसरी में परिवर्तन तत्काल हो जाता है
mūrcchāma swoon — but now a swoon acc. sg., object of pallavayati; the second, joyful swoon (contrast the calamitous one of L3)मूर्च्छा को — पल्लवयति का कर्म; यह दूसरी, आनन्दमयी मूर्च्छा है (L3 की विपत्तिमयी से भिन्न)
antaḥwithin, deep insideभीतर ही भीतर
sakhiO friend vocative — she is speaking to her sakhīहे सखी! — वह अपनी सखी से कह रही है
sukha-mayīmmade all of joy — a swoon of pure happiness acc. sg. with mūrcchām; Viśvanātha glosses ānanda-mūrcchāmसुख से भरी हुई (मूर्च्छा को); विश्वनाथ इसे आनन्द-मूर्च्छा कहते हैं
pallavayatimakes it sprout, brings it into bud denominative present ('puts out shoots'); on the present tense see Jīva's s3पल्लवित कर देता है ('नये कोंपल फोड़ता है'); इस वर्तमान काल के विषय में जीव की s3 देखें
drutam antaḥ — swiftly, within; sukha-mayīm mūrcchām — a swoon made all of joy; sakhi — O friend; pallavayati — it makes sprout.
he sakhi — हे सखी; drutam antaḥ — तुरन्त भीतर ही; sukha-mayīm mūrcchām pallavayati — सुखमयी मूर्च्छा को पल्लवित कर देता है।
And in its place, O friend, it swiftly makes a new swoon bud open inside me — one made all of joy. So whose touch was it?
हे सखी! वही स्पर्श तुरन्त भीतर ही एक सुखमयी मूर्च्छा को अंकुरित कर देता है।
The verse's turn: one and the same touch strips away the swoon of ruin (L3) and, in the same instant, sprouts a swoon of bliss — the sukha-mayī mūrcchā.
यही श्लोक का मोड़ है: एक ही स्पर्श विपत्ति की मूर्च्छा (L3) को छीन लेता है और उसी क्षण एक आनन्द की मूर्च्छा — सुखमयी मूर्च्छा — को फुटा देता है।

madhuraḥ svabhāvād evānanda-dāyakaḥ |
madhuraḥ'madhura' (sweet) means:मधुर (शब्द का अर्थ)
svabhāvād evaby its very nature ablative of cause + eva — the sweetness is intrinsic, not from anything addedस्वभाव से ही — क्योंकि यह मधुरता स्वाभाविक है, किसी बाहरी वस्तु से जोड़ी हुई नहीं
ānanda-dāyakaḥit gives joy nom. predicate glossing madhuraḥ — 'joy-giving'आनन्द देने वाला — यही 'मधुर' का अर्थ है
madhuraḥ — 'sweet'; svabhāvāt eva — by its very nature; ānanda-dāyakaḥ — joy-giving.
madhuraḥ — मधुर; svabhāvād eva — स्वभाव से ही; ānanda-dāyakaḥ — आनन्ददायी।
Jīva: 'sweet' (madhura) means joy-giving — and joy-giving of its own nature, not because of anything else.
'मधुर' का अर्थ है स्वभाव से ही आनन्द देने वाला।
Viśvanātha (s3) glosses the word identically: svabhāvata evānanda-dāyakaḥ.
विश्वनाथ (s3) इसी शब्द का ठीक यही अर्थ करते हैं — svabhāvata evānanda-dāyakaḥ।
s2gloss
masṛṇaḥ tvaco guṇataḥ komalaḥ |
masṛṇaḥ'masṛṇa' (soft) means:मसृण (शब्द का अर्थ)
tvaco guṇataḥby the quality of the skin gen. tvacaḥ + ablative guṇataḥ — the softness is a property belonging to the skinत्वचा के गुण के कारण — यह कोमलता त्वचा का अपना गुण है
komalaḥit is tender, smooth nom. predicate glossing masṛṇaḥकोमल — यही 'मसृण' का अर्थ है
masṛṇaḥ — 'soft'; tvacaḥ guṇataḥ — by the quality of the skin; komalaḥ — tender.
masṛṇaḥ — मसृण; tvacaḥ guṇataḥ — त्वचा के गुण से; komalaḥ — कोमल।
Jīva: 'soft' (masṛṇa) means tender — soft by the quality of the skin itself.
'मसृण' का अर्थ है त्वचा के अपने गुण से कोमल।
So Jīva splits the compound madhura-masṛṇa into two distinct notes: madhura = joy-giving by nature (the feel), masṛṇa = tender by the skin's own quality.
इस प्रकार जीव 'मधुर-मसृण' समास को दो पृथक् अर्थों में विभक्त करते हैं: मधुर = स्वभाव से आनन्ददायी (अनुभूति), मसृण = त्वचा के गुण से कोमल।

pallavayatīti vartamāna-sāmīpye vartamānavattvam ||
pallavayati itias for the present-tense form 'pallavayati' (it makes sprout) iti flags the mūla word as the item being grammatically explained'पल्लवयति' — 'इति' मूल के इस शब्द को व्याकरण की दृष्टि से समझाए जाने वाले पद के रूप में उठाता है
vartamāna-sāmīpyewhen an action is close upon the present moment — right about to happen locative naming the condition; vartamāna-sāmīpya = 'nearness to the present'वर्तमान की समीपता होने पर — 'वर्तमान-सामीप्य' अर्थात् वर्तमान के निकट का काल (सप्तमी)
vartamānavattvamthe present tense is used as if the thing were already present the grammatical rule: for an imminent act, Sanskrit puts the verb in the presentवर्तमान की भाँति प्रयोग — व्याकरण का नियम कि निकट भावी क्रिया में संस्कृत वर्तमान काल रखती है
pallavayati iti — the form 'pallavayati'; vartamāna-sāmīpye — since the act is right upon the present; vartamānavattvam — [shows] use of the present tense for the near-at-hand.
pallavayati iti — 'पल्लवयति' यह (पद); vartamāna-sāmīpye — वर्तमान की समीपता में; vartamānavattvam — वर्तमानवत् प्रयोग।
Jīva on the grammar: 'pallavayati' is in the present tense, but the joyful swoon is only just about to bud. Sanskrit lets you use the present for something on the very verge of happening — so the present here means 'is about to make sprout'.
'पल्लवयति' पद में वर्तमान के निकट होने के कारण क्रिया वर्तमान काल में रखी गई है।
vartamāna-sāmīpye vartamānavat — a standard rule: an action imminent to the present moment is expressed with the present tense.
'वर्तमान-सामीप्य में वर्तमानवत्' — यह एक प्रसिद्ध नियम है: जो क्रिया वर्तमान क्षण के निकट (भावी) हो, उसे वर्तमान काल में कहा जाता है।

Viśvanātha continues: the swoon would not lift for all their efforts. So the friends managed to bring Kṛṣṇa. He touched Rādhikā's body with his own hand and then, for fun, vanished again on the spot. His touch broke the swoon; and the moment she came round, Rādhikā turned to her friend and spoke the verse, 'asau…'.
तब बहुत प्रयत्नों से भी मूर्च्छा न टूटती देखकर सखियाँ यत्नपूर्वक श्रीकृष्ण को वहाँ ले आईं। उन्होंने अपने हाथ से राधिका के अंग को छू लिया और कौतुकवश फिर वहीं अन्तर्धान होकर छिपे रहे। उनके स्पर्श से मूर्च्छा टूटने के तुरन्त बाद श्रीराधिका सखी से 'असौ' इत्यादि कहती हैं।
This is Viśvanātha's frame for the whole verse: the 'hand-touch' Rādhikā wonders at is Kṛṣṇa's, but since he has vanished she does not yet know whose it was — hence 'kasya?' ('whose?').
यह पूरे श्लोक के लिए विश्वनाथ की भूमिका है: जिस 'हाथ के स्पर्श' पर राधिका विस्मित हैं वह कृष्ण का है, किन्तु वे अन्तर्धान हो चुके हैं इसलिए वह अभी नहीं जानतीं कि वह किसका था — अतः 'kasya?' ('किसका?')।

Viśvanātha reads the second half straight through: O friend, when I saw the grove on the Yamunā's bank I fell to pieces, and an unendurable swoon of pure calamity closed over me within. That very hand-touch drove it clean away — and in its place buds a swoon of bliss. Whose touch could it be?
