yuktāsya sphūrti-mātreṇa nirviśeṣeṇa kenacit |
hṛn-mīlanāt puro’vasthā nidrā bhakteṣu kathyate ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
yuktāsya sphūrti-mātreṇa nirviśeṣeṇa kenacit |
yuktājoined with, endowed with — the state (fem., agreeing with avasthā in L2) that is furnished with what followsयुक्त, अर्थात् जिससे युक्त — जो इस स्फूर्ति से भरी हो
asyaof Him — i.e. of Kṛṣṇa, whose flashing appears genitive dependent on sphūrti; antecedent supplied by the commentatorsइसकी — जिसकी स्फूर्ति हो; किसकी, यह आचार्य आगे बताते हैं
sphūrti-mātreṇaby a mere flash, a bare showing-forth instrumental of means; mātra = 'nothing but a flash', no full pastimeकेवल एक झलक के द्वारा — कोई पूरी लीला नहीं, बस स्फुरण मात्र
nirviśeṣeṇathat is featureless, without any particular form or pastimeजो निर्विशेष हो — किसी विशेष लीला-भेद से रहित
kenacitsome, indefinite — 'some or other' faint flash indefinite qualifying sphūrti-mātreṇaकिसी भी — यह स्फूर्ति-मात्र को अनिश्चित रूप से बताता है
asya — of Him; kenacit nirviśeṣeṇa sphūrti-mātreṇa — with some featureless mere flash; yuktā — joined
It is joined with some faint, featureless flash of Him. Not a full pastime — just a bare showing-forth of Kṛṣṇa, with no particular feature.
The lakṣaṇa (definition) of nidrā, 'sleep', as a vyabhicāri-bhāva of the fourth laharī. What makes a devotee's sleep count as bhāva and not ordinary tamo-guṇic sleep is exactly this faint flash of Kṛṣṇa carried in it.
L2definition
hṛn-mīlanāt puro’vasthā nidrā bhakteṣu kathyate ||
hṛn-mīlanātbefore the closing of the heart ablative governed by puraḥ = 'prior to'हृदय के मुँदने से — इससे पहले की, ऐसा 'पुरः' के कारण
avasthāthe state, condition — the subject the whole verse definesअवस्था — वह मनःस्थिति
nidrāis 'sleep' — the term being definedनिद्रा — यही निद्रा है
bhakteṣuamong devotees locative of domain: this holds specifically in the case of devoteesभक्तों में — विशेषतः भक्तों के विषय में यह कही जाती है
hṛn-mīlanāt puraḥ avasthā — the state prior to the heart's closing; bhakteṣu — among devotees; nidrā kathyate — is called sleep
The state just before the heart shuts down — that, in the case of devotees, is what is called 'sleep'. So the name attaches to the moment before, not to the shutting itself.

nanu pūrvaṁ citta-mīlanaṁ nidrety uktaṁ, sā ca tamo-guṇena citta-vṛtti-rūpaiva prasiddhā, sā ca parama-bhaktānāṁ na sambhavati, guṇātīta-cittatvāt |
pūrvaṁ citta-mīlanaṁ nidrā ity uktaṁearlier it was said that 'closing of the mind is sleep'पहले तो चित्त के मुँदने को ही निद्रा कहा गया था
sā ca tamo-guṇena citta-vṛtti-rūpā eva prasiddhāand that is well known as a mental modification produced by tamo-guṇa instrumental tamo-guṇena = 'caused by'; eva restricts it to that aloneऔर वह तो प्रसिद्ध ही है कि तमोगुण के कारण होने वाली चित्त-वृत्ति ही है — 'ही' उसे इसी तक सीमित करता है
sā ca parama-bhaktānāṁ na sambhavatiand that cannot occur in the highest devoteesऔर वह परम भक्तों में तो सम्भव ही नहीं
guṇātīta-cittatvātbecause their minds are beyond the guṇas ablative of reasonक्योंकि उनका चित्त गुणातीत होता है — यही न होने का कारण है
pūrvaṁ 'citta-mīlanaṁ nidrā' ity uktaṁ; sā ca tamo-guṇena citta-vṛtti-rūpā prasiddhā; sā ca parama-bhaktānāṁ na sambhavati, guṇātīta-cittatvāt
But wait — earlier sleep was defined as 'the closing of the mind'. And that kind of sleep is famously a mental state caused by tamo-guṇa. Such a thing can't happen to the highest devotees, since their minds are past the guṇas altogether.
Jīva reconstructs the doubt against defining nidrā for devotees: ordinary sleep is tāmasic, but the devotee's mind is guṇātīta — so how can he sleep at all?

tarhi kena tadāvṛtir iyaṁ nidrā ? tatrāha—yukteti |
tarhi kena tad-āvṛtir iyaṁ nidrāthen by what is this sleep a covering of that [mind]? kena = instrumental, 'by means of what'; āvṛti = the covering-over of consciousnessतो फिर किसके द्वारा चेतना का यह आवरण, यह निद्रा होती है?
tatra āha—yuktā itito this he replies with 'yuktā etc.'

So then, by what does this 'sleep' cover over the mind? To answer, Rūpa gives the verse beginning 'yuktā'.
The avataraṇikā: naming the question the mūla verse is composed to settle.

na tu prākṛtī yujyateand no material sleep fits them tu marks the contrast; yujyate = 'is appropriate to'परन्तु प्राकृत निद्रा उन्हें उचित नहीं — 'तु' विरोध दिखाता है
iti bhāvaḥthis is the senseऐसा तात्पर्य है
guṇātīta-bhāvatvātbecause their inner state is beyond the guṇas ablative of reason — answering the objection's own premiseक्योंकि उनका भाव गुणातीत होता है — यही उत्तर का हेतु है
asya śrī-kṛṣṇasya uttama-bhaktānāṁ nidrā bhagavat-samādhi-rūpā eva, na tu prākṛtī yujyate, guṇātīta-bhāvatvāt — iti bhāvaḥ
The sleep of Kṛṣṇa's topmost devotees is simply a form of absorption in the Lord — it is not, and cannot be, material sleep. Why? Because their very mood is beyond the guṇas. The objection's own premise becomes the answer.
Jīva turns the objection: guṇātītatva does not forbid the devotee's sleep, it upgrades it — the sleep is samādhi, not tamas.

Why cited: Gāruḍa-vacana proving that for the yogī every mental state, deep sleep included, has Acyuta as its ground — so a devotee's sleep is Lord-centred absorption.

śrī-kṛṣṇasya sphūrti-mayatvātbecause it consists of the flashing of Śrī Kṛṣṇa ablative of reason: the state is filled with Kṛṣṇa's flashक्योंकि वह अवस्था श्रीकृष्ण की स्फूर्ति से भरी होती है — यही हेतु है
hṛn-mīlanāt puraḥ avasthā eva nidrā ucyatethe state just prior to the heart's closing alone is called sleep eva restricts the name to the prior momentहृदय मुँदने से पूर्व की अवस्था ही निद्रा कही जाती है — 'ही' नाम को उसी पूर्व-क्षण तक सीमित करता है

That is exactly why the verse names the moment before the heart shuts, not the shutting itself. It is that prior moment which is soaked in Kṛṣṇa's flash — so that is what earns the name 'sleep'. The bare closing alone would not.
Jīva reads the verse's puraḥ ('before') strictly: the flash lives in the moment before the heart closes, so the definition points there, not at the blank closing.

As for that earlier line, 'closing of the mind is sleep' — that was only a first-glance teaching. It states the surface; the present verse gives the real definition for devotees.
Jīva reconciles the two definitions: the earlier one is provisional (āpātataḥ), the present one is the settled sense.
