Viśvanātha sets the scene. Once, among all the gathered girls of Vraja, Kṛṣṇa suddenly saw Candrāvalī with her friends and — mistaking her for another gopī named Tārā — called out, 'O my beloved Tārā!' Candrāvalī flared up at once, stormed off, and settled in another bower with her friends. Kṛṣṇa followed, stood before her, and tried every kind of coaxing to break her sulk. It is to that coaxing Kṛṣṇa that Candrāvalī's friend Padmā speaks: 'O thief of the kadamba grove! Get away from here.'
Viśvanātha takes 'Tārā' as a real, lowly gopī of that name whom Kṛṣṇa confused Candrāvalī with — the surface story. He does not read Tārā as a hint of Rādhā; that is only Jīva's reading.

Viśvanātha glosses the last lines. Candrāvalī is the finest of all — and yet you branded her, openly, with the name 'Tārā,' the name of an utterly unworthy woman. For us there is no insult worse than that. Note his reading: 'unworthy' attaches to that low gopī Tārā whose name was misapplied, not to the name as such.
