You, Kṛṣṇa — the one whose glory is sung by sages who have given up the ascetic's rod. Rukmiṇī opens by naming exactly the renunciants Kṛṣṇa had mocked her for being praised by, and makes their praise a badge of honor.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of garva, 'pride', a vyabhicāri-bhāva of the caturtha-laharī (2.4). It is Rukmiṇī's proud reply to Kṛṣṇa's teasing at Bhā.Pu. 10.60, quoted from 10.60.39.

Jīva sets the scene: recalling what she herself did at the churning of the milk-ocean — when, as Lakṣmī, she chose Viṣṇu — Rukmiṇī now speaks.
Jīva reads Rukmiṇī as Lakṣmī, who at the kṣīroda-mathana chose Viṣṇu; her present choice of Kṛṣṇa is that same ancient choice.

To bring out 'I settled on you long, long ago,' the word 'nyasta-daṇḍa (rod laid down)' does real work: it signals sages who are free of every attachment and every craving. So Jīva reads the epithet as pointing to their — and by extension her — desirelessness.

saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodhaḥ abhijāyate iti-ādeḥ — on the strength of 'from attachment comes desire, from desire anger,' etc.
Jīva backs the reading with the Gītā: attachment breeds desire, desire breeds anger. Since these sages have cut off attachment (nyasta-daṇḍa), they are free of desire — which is why the epithet carries the sense of total desirelessness.
Why cited: Gītā 2.62, cited to license reading 'rod laid down' as 'free of all attachment and desire' — no attachment, hence no desire.

Viśvanātha closes the pattern: every taunt of Kṛṣṇa's is answered with proud confidence.
'adīrgha-samīkṣayā' ('with short-sighted judgment') is the last of Kṛṣṇa's taunts from Bhā.Pu. 10.60, turned back here; the sustained pride throughout is what makes the verse an udāharaṇa of garva.
