L1definition
prāyo’tra maraṇāt pūrvā citta-vṛttir mṛtir matā |
prāyaḥfor the most part, as a ruleप्रायः, अधिकांशतः
atrahere — in this list of transient moodsयहाँ, इस प्रसंग में
maraṇāt pūrvāoccurring just before death ablative maraṇāt ("than death") + pūrvā = the state that comes prior to dying, not dying itselfमरण से पहले की (पञ्चमी 'मरणात्' — मरने से पूर्व की, मरना स्वयं नहीं)
citta-vṛttiḥthe turn of the mind, the inner stateचित्त की वृत्ति
mṛtiḥis what the term "mṛti" (death) namesमृति (नामक व्यभिचारी भाव)
matāis held to be, is reckonedमानी गई है
atra — here; prāyaḥ — as a rule; maraṇāt pūrvā citta-vṛttiḥ — the inner state that comes just before death; mṛtiḥ matā — is what is reckoned as "mṛti" (death).
As a rule, when "death" (mṛti) is counted here among the transient moods, what is meant is not dying itself. It is the state of mind a person passes through just before death.
Defines the vyabhicāri-bhāva called mṛti ("death"). Rūpa fixes the sense: the transient mood is the mental condition preceding death, not the physical event.
L2objection
mṛtir atrānubhāvaḥ syād iti kenacid ucyate |
mṛtiḥthis "death" (mṛti)मृति
atrahere — in such a caseयहाँ, इस प्रसंग में
anubhāvaḥan anubhāva (an outward, bodily sign of feeling)अनुभाव (भाव को प्रकट करने वाली बाह्य चेष्टा)
itiso runs the view iti closes the reported opinion'इति' शब्द — यह कहकर कथित मत को समेटता है
kenacidby someone, by a certain party instrumental of the indefinite kaścit — an unnamed objectorकिसी अनाम व्यक्ति के द्वारा (तृतीया 'कश्चित्' — कोई एक आपत्ति करने वाला)
ucyateit is saidकहा जाता है
atra mṛtiḥ anubhāvaḥ syāt iti — "here this death would be an anubhāva"; kenacid ucyate — so someone says.
Someone objects: surely, in such a case, "death" ought to be classed not as a transient mood but as an anubhāva — an outward bodily sign of feeling.
A reported dissenting view ("kenacit"), left unnamed. Rūpa states it here and answers it in the next line.
L3conclusion
kintu nāyaka-vīry ārthaṁ śatrau maraṇam ucyate ||
kintubut — against that viewपरन्तु
nāyaka-vīry ārthamin order to bring out the hero's prowess accusative of purpose (-artham): the killing is mentioned for the sake of nāyaka-vīrya, the hero's valorनायक के वीर्य (पराक्रम) को दिखाने के लिए ('अर्थम्' — प्रयोजन बताता है)
śatrauin the case of an enemy locative — the death that befalls the foeशत्रु में (सप्तमी — शत्रु को जो मरण प्राप्त होता है)
maraṇamthe killing, the actual dyingमरण, मृत्यु
kintu — but; śatrau maraṇam — the death of an enemy; nāyaka-vīryārtham ucyate — is spoken of [only] to bring out the hero's prowess.
But when actual killing is described, it is the death of an enemy, and it is mentioned only to display the hero's valor. So even there it is not "death" in the sense of a transient mood.
The settling reply to the objection of L2: an enemy's literal death serves to show off the hero's power, and so is a separate matter from mṛti as a vyabhicāri-bhāva.
