viramat — ceasing; alaghu-kaṇṭha-udghoṣa — loud-throated crying; ghutkāra-cakrā — she whose circle of owl-hoots [was that]
Pūtanā is painted as a doomsday-night. In that night the ring of loud owl-hoots was falling silent.
An udāharaṇa (the lead-in reads yathā vā—, 'or as in') in the vyabhicāri-laharī (2.4), the chapter on the transient emotions; the verse depicts death (mṛti), Pūtanā's, as a night that dissolves at dawn. The whole verse is one sustained rūpaka: Pūtanā = the doomsday-night (kāla-rātri), Kṛṣṇa = the sun, her fading vision = fireflies, her cries = owls.

A night's darkness is its very substance. Kṛṣṇa, the sun, drank up that thick darkness — which was her life-breath itself.

Viśvanātha names the metaphor's parts. Hari is the sun. What the sun drank was her thick ego, standing here for her life-breath. She, so described, is the doomsday-night in Pūtanā's form.
Viśvanātha glosses gāḍha-andhakāra ('thick darkness') as gāḍha-ahaṅkāra ('thick ego'), reading her life-breath as her egotism that Kṛṣṇa drains away.
