gāyantya uccair ity atra tunow, here in the verse 'gāyantya uccaiḥ' — tu marks Jīva turning to his own construal of this verse'गायन्त्य उच्चैः' इस (पद्य) में तो ('तु' शब्द से जीव अपनी व्याख्या की ओर मुड़ते हैं)
evam eva unmādaḥ yojanīyaḥunmāda (madness) is to be read in just this wayइसी प्रकार यहाँ उन्माद को जोड़ना चाहिए
puruṣaṁ sva-nāyakaṁ papracchuḥ'puruṣa' means their own hero — Kṛṣṇa — and it is he they questioned Jīva glosses puruṣa = sva-nāyaka, their lover'पुरुष' अर्थात् अपने नायक (कृष्ण) को उन्होंने पूछा

atra 'gāyantya uccaiḥ' — here in this verse; unmādaḥ evam eva yojanīyaḥ — madness is to be construed just so; puruṣaṁ sva-nāyakaṁ papracchuḥ — 'puruṣa' = their hero Kṛṣṇa, whom they asked; taṁ bhūteṣu sthāvara-jaṅgameṣu ākāśavad antaraṁ bahiḥ ca santaṁ — him present within and without all beings, still and moving, like the sky; sākṣād iva sat tayā sphurantaṁ papracchuḥ — questioning him as he shone forth as if directly present; tādṛśa-sphūrtiḥ tāsāṁ prema-vilāsa-viśeṣād eva — such a vision arising only from a special play of their love; vana-latāḥ… iti-vat — as in Bhā. 10.35.9; bahiḥ-sphuraṇaṁ dūrataḥ, antaḥ tu nikaṭāt — outer shining from afar, inner from near; tatra sati unmāda-vṛttyā anindriyeṣu api praśne yogyaḥ — that granted, madness makes questioning even senseless trees fitting
Jīva says the madness (unmāda) should be read into this verse exactly as it stands. 'Puruṣa' is their own hero, Kṛṣṇa, and it is he they question. He was in fact present to them — within and without all beings, moving and still, pervading like the sky — flashing into view as if right before their eyes. That vision arose from nothing but a special play of their love (prema-vilāsa). It is like the line 'the forest creepers and trees reveal Viṣṇu within themselves.' Of the two, the outer shining reaches them from afar, the inner from close by. Once this is granted, their madness makes it fitting that they question even senseless trees.
