āvegābhāsa evāyaṁ parāśrayatāpi cet |
nāyakotkarṣa-bodhāya tathāpy atra nidarśitaḥ
The verse — decoded
L1objection
āvegābhāsa evāyaṁ parāśrayatāpi cet |
āvegābhāsaḥ evathis is merely a semblance of āvega, not the real vyabhicāri-bhāva eva = 'merely'; āvega-ābhāsa = a look-alike of āvegaयह तो केवल आवेग का आभास ही है — असली आवेग नहीं, केवल उसके सदृश दिखने वाला ('एव' से 'मात्र' का भाव)
parāśrayatā api cetand even granted that it also rests on another — on the enemy, not on a devotee cet = 'if / granted that'; api adds a second concession on top of 'merely a semblance'और यह दूसरे (शत्रु) के आश्रय में उठता है — यदि यह भी मान लिया जाए ('चेत्' से 'यदि', 'अपि' से पहली आपत्ति पर दूसरी आपत्ति जुड़ती है)
ayam — this instance; āvegābhāsaḥ eva — is merely a semblance of āvega; parāśrayatā api cet — and even granted it rests on another (the enemy).
Rūpa anticipates two objections. First: what is shown here is only a semblance of āvega, not real āvega. Second: even granting that, it rests on the wrong party — on the enemy, not on a devotee.
āvega is the vyabhicāri-bhāva (transient emotion) defined in this fourth laharī; an ābhāsa is a mere look-alike of it. parāśraya = 'resting on another' — the emotion arises in the enemy rather than in a devotee, which would normally disqualify it.

nāyakotkarṣa-bodhāya tathāpy atra nidarśitaḥ
nāyaka-utkarṣa-bodhāyain order to make known the hero's supreme excellence dative of purpose — bodha 'making-known' governs the whole compoundनायक (कृष्ण) की श्रेष्ठता का ज्ञान कराने के लिए (बोध पूरे समास का प्रयोजन बताता है — चतुर्थी)
tathā apieven so — despite being only a semblance and resting on the enemyफिर भी (उपर्युक्त दोष होने पर भी)
atrahere [in this section]यहाँ (इस प्रकरण में)
nidarśitaḥit is nonetheless displayed as an illustrationइसे दृष्टान्त रूप में दिखाया गया है
tathā api — even so; nāyaka-utkarṣa-bodhāya — to make known the hero's excellence; atra — here; nidarśitaḥ — it is displayed.
The reply: even so, it is shown here for one reason — to make the hero's excellence known. That purpose is why an instance that is only a semblance, and lodged in the enemy, still earns its place in this section.

Jīva: the passage further on — the one that opens with the word 'āvega' — is what brings the hero's excellence to light.

tathā-vidhāḥ kṛtvā nāyaka-pakṣīyair jitā iti śravaṇāt |
tathā-vidhāḥ kṛtvāhaving reduced [the enemies] to that agitated state absolutive; tathā-vidhāḥ = 'made of such a kind', its doer being the hero's sideउन्हें उस प्रकार का (व्याकुल) बनाकर — जिसका कर्ता नायक-पक्ष है (पूर्वकालिक क्रिया)
nāyaka-pakṣīyaiḥby those on the hero's side instrumental of agentनायक के पक्ष वालों के द्वारा (तृतीया — कर्ता)
jitāḥ[the enemies] were conqueredवे जीत लिए गए
iti śravaṇātbecause this is what one hears in the account ablative of reason; iti closes the reported contentऐसा सुनने के कारण ('इति' से कथित बात समाप्त होती है, पंचमी हेतु दिखाती है)
nāyaka-pakṣīyaiḥ — by the hero's side; tathā-vidhāḥ kṛtvā — [the enemies] having been reduced to that state; jitāḥ iti — were conquered, so it runs; śravaṇāt — because we hear this.
Why it reveals the hero's excellence: because the account tells us that the enemies, once thrown into that agitated state, were then defeated by the hero's own men.

bhaktānām — the devotees'; harṣeṇa — through joy; ratiḥ uddīptā syāt — rati would blaze up; iti etad artham — for exactly this purpose; iti arthaḥ — this is the meaning.
The whole point, Jīva concludes, is this: so that the devotees' rati would flare up with joy at hearing it. That is the purpose for which the illustration is given.

parāḥ śatravaḥ teṣāṁ bhakty-abhāvāt ayam āvegābhāsa eva jñeyaḥ ||
parāḥ śatravaḥ'para' [in the verse's parāśrayatā] means the enemies glossing the mūla word para — 'the other' is here the foe'पर' अर्थात् शत्रु (मूल के 'पर' शब्द की व्याख्या — यहाँ 'दूसरा' का अर्थ शत्रु है)
teṣām bhakti-abhāvātbecause in them there is no devotion ablative of reason; abhāva = absenceउनमें भक्ति के अभाव के कारण (पंचमी हेतु; अभाव = न होना)
ayam āvegābhāsaḥ evathis is only a semblance of āvega, not real āvega eva = 'only'यह केवल आवेग का आभास ही है ('एव' से 'मात्र')
jñeyaḥis to be understoodजानना चाहिए
parāḥ — 'para' means; śatravaḥ — the enemies; teṣām bhakti-abhāvāt — because they have no devotion; ayam — this; āvegābhāsaḥ eva — is only a semblance of āvega; jñeyaḥ — is to be understood.
Viśvanātha: 'para' in the verse means the enemies. Since they have no bhakti, what looks like āvega in them is to be taken as only a semblance of āvega — not the real emotion.
