L1example
apasarāpasara tvarayā gurur
apasara apasaraget away, get away!
tvarayāquickly, in a hurry instrumental used adverbially — "with haste"जल्दी से, शीघ्रता के साथ
guruḥthe huge one [is coming] — the great beast (subject, carried over into the next line) nominative subject; its predicate word karī waits in L2भारी (यह कर्ता है; इसका विशेष्य-पद 'करी' L2 में आता है)
apasara apasara — get away, get away!; tvarayā — quickly; guruḥ — the huge one [approaches]
"Get away, get away, quick!" a town-woman cries. Something huge is coming.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, lead-in "yathā—") of the caturtha-laharī, the vyabhicāri-bhāvas (Dakṣiṇa-vibhāga 2.4.73): the town-women's unsteady hearts trembling as Kṛṣṇa glances at them. The surface warns of an elephant; the real cause of the trembling is his tender look.
L2example
mudira-sundara he purataḥ karī |
mudira-sundaraO you who are lovely as a rain-cloud (addressing Kṛṣṇa) vocative; mudira = rain-cloud, so "cloud-beautiful one"हे मेघ के समान सुन्दर!
heO — the vocative callहे (सम्बोधन)
purataḥup ahead, right in frontसामने, आगे
karīthe elephant [is]! — completing "the huge one" of L1 nominative; karī "the tusker" is the predicate of guruḥहाथी (यही 'गुरुः' का विशेष्य है — वह भारी वस्तु हाथी है)
he mudira-sundara — O cloud-lovely one!; purataḥ — right in front; karī — is the elephant
"O cloud-beautiful one, there is an elephant right in front of you!"

mradima-vīkṣaṇatas tava naś calaṁ
mradima-vīkṣaṇataḥbecause of [your] soft, tender glancing ablative of cause — "from your gentle look"; Viśvanātha glosses mradima = mārdava, tendernessतेरी कोमल चितवन के कारण (विश्वनाथ मृदिम = मार्दव, कोमलता बताते हैं)
tavayourतेरी
naḥour genitive going with hṛdayam in L4 — "the heart of us"हम सबका (यह 'हृदयम्' L4 के साथ जुड़ता है)
calaṁunsteady, already fluttering (describing the heart in L4)चंचल, अस्थिर
tava mradima-vīkṣaṇataḥ — because of your tender glance; naḥ calaṁ [hṛdayam] — our already-unsteady heart
But the giveaway is the reason she names: "from your tender glance." Our restless heart, she says. Not the elephant at all — his soft look is what shakes them.

hṛdayam āvijate pura-yoṣitām ||
hṛdayamthe heart (subject)हृदय
āvijatetrembles, is thrown into agitation Viśvanātha reads the form as udvijate = "shudders, quakes with fear"काँप उठता है (विश्वनाथ इसे उद्विजते पढ़ते हैं — भय से थर्रा उठता है)
pura-yoṣitāmof the town-women — whose heart it is genitive dependent on hṛdayamनगर की स्त्रियों का (यह 'हृदयम्' का सम्बन्ध बताता है)
pura-yoṣitām hṛdayam — the town-women's heart; āvijate — trembles
The town-women's heart quakes. On the surface it is fear of the tusker; underneath it is what his glance has done to them.
The trembling heart (calaṁ hṛdayam ... āvijate) is the vyabhicāri-bhāva this verse illustrates — a passing agitation stirred by Kṛṣṇa's glance, dressed up as alarm at the elephant.
L5definition
gajena duṣṭa-sattvo’nyaḥ paśv-ādir upalakṣyate ||
gajenaby [the word] "elephant" instrumental of means — "by using the word gaja"'गज' शब्द के द्वारा
duṣṭa-sattvaḥ anyaḥsome other vicious creature (besides the elephant itself)कोई और दुष्ट प्राणी
paśv-ādiḥanimals and the likeपशु आदि (हिंसक जीवों का समूह)
upalakṣyateis pointed to indirectly — the word stands for them, it does not name only the elephantउपलक्षित होता है, संकेत से समझा जाता है
gajena — by the word "elephant"; anyaḥ duṣṭa-sattvaḥ paśv-ādiḥ — another vicious creature, animals and so on; upalakṣyate — is indicated
Rūpa adds a note: when he says "elephant" he does not mean only an elephant. The word points to any dangerous beast — animals and the like. So the illustration is not tied to one animal.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa. A viśeṣaṇa is part of what the thing is — "the blue lotus," where blue belongs to the lotus. An upalakṣaṇa only points you to something beyond itself — "the house with the crow on it," where the crow just helps you find the house and is not part of it. Here "gaja" is an upalakṣaṇa: it flags the whole class of vicious beasts, so the verse illustrates any such creature, not the elephant alone.

Jīva backs up the reading. The Amarakośa lists "sattva" among its meanings as "living creature." That is the sense Rūpa uses in "duṣṭa-sattva" — a wicked creature.
Why cited: Adduced from the Amarakośa's nānārtha (multiple-meaning) list to establish that sattva can mean "living creature/beast," licensing the reading of duṣṭa-sattva as "vicious beast."

Viśvanātha decodes it word by word. "Cloud-lovely one" — beautiful as a rain-cloud. "In front" — up ahead. The "huge one" is the great tusker Kuvalayāpīḍa. "From your tender glance," "our" restless heart "trembles" — that is, it quakes with fear. That, he says, is the meaning.

Viśvanātha identifies the elephant as Kuvalayāpīḍa, the killer-tusker Kaṁsa set in Kṛṣṇa's path at Mathurā.
