jātyā ślathe hṛdi — in a heart slack by nature; prodyan — rising up; mud-vismayāder ābhāsaḥ — a semblance of joy, astonishment, etc.
Take a heart that is by nature slack — not fixed in bhakti. In such a heart a mere semblance of joy, astonishment, and the other feelings can rise up. It is only a shadow of the real emotion, not the emotion itself.
Defines the source-condition for the sattvābhāsa-bhavāḥ. jātyā ślathe hṛdi is the key qualifier: the heart is constitutionally unsteady, so what appears there is at best a likeness of feeling.

Jīva raises a precision. Strictly, 'sattva' names only the mind that is overpowered by real bhāva — that is the settled convention. So the verse should have said: 'the mind in which a semblance of joy etc. arises.' Instead it says flatly that the semblance itself is the sattvābhāsa. Why the shortcut? To stress that this semblance is the chief cause of the symptoms. It is the same figure as the common saying 'ghee is life' (āyur ghṛtam): ghee is not literally life, but because it is the outstanding cause of long life we name the cause by its effect. Here likewise the semblance is called sattva because it is the prominent cause of the sattva-like signs.
The 'ghee is life' maxim (āyur ghṛtam) is a dṛṣṭānta for naming a thing by its effect: ghee stands for the semblance-of-joy; 'life' stands for sattva/its signs; the identification stands for the verse's loose equation. It proves the equation is a deliberate figure stressing causation, not a literal claim that the ābhāsa is sattva.

Viśvanātha makes the same precision as Jīva. 'Sattva' properly names only the mind overpowered by real bhāva. So the verse ought to have said: if a semblance of joy etc. is present in a mind, then that mind is what is meant. Instead it says flatly that the semblance itself is the sattvābhāsa. This shortcut is deliberate — it is to stress that the semblance is the outstanding cause of the symptoms.
Viśvanātha's text carries a variant reading, 'yady asmin … tac-cittam' ('if it is in this, that is the citta'), where Jīva has 'yasmiṁs tac cittam' ('the mind in which it is'). The argument is the same; the phrasing differs. Do not merge the two.

Just like the common saying 'ghee is life' (āyur ghṛtam). Ghee is not literally life, but because it is the chief cause of long life the cause is named by its effect. So too the semblance is here called sattva because it is the prominent cause of the sattva-like signs.
Why cited: The 'ghee is life' maxim is adduced to justify the verse's loose equation: naming a prominent cause by its effect is standard usage, so calling the semblance itself 'sattvābhāsa' is a deliberate figure of causal emphasis, not a literal identity.

Viśvanātha glosses 'old Mīmāṁsaka' plainly: it means one devoid of bhakti. That is the whole point of the example — the horripilation arose in a man with no devotion at all, so it can only be a semblance of sattva, not the real thing.
This gloss ties the udāharaṇa (L3-L4) back to the definition: because the man is bhakti-rahita, his hair standing on end is a sattvābhāsa-bhava, an effect of a mere semblance of sattva.
