dhausaryamis what 'grayness' (dhausarya) meansधूसरता है
śveta-rakta-ādi-nānā-varṇa-sāhityaṁ — the co-presence of many colors, white, red, and the rest; dhausaryam — that is dhausarya.
Viśvanātha defines the term dhausarya from the first line: it is not a single hue but a mixture — white and red and other colors blended together, giving that muddy, dun look.

tasya raktimṇaḥ — 'of this one' = of the redness; tathā ca — and so; viṣāda-ādau — in despondency and the rest; yathā sarvatra — just as everywhere; śvetima-dhausaryāt anyatarasya āvaśyakatvaṁ — one of whiteness or grayness is bound to appear; na tathā harṣe sarvatra raktimatvaṁ — not so is redness in every case of joy; iti bhāvaḥ — this is the purport.
Viśvanātha, like Jīva, reads the 'this one' as the redness. His point about why no example is given: in despondency and the like, one of the two — whiteness or grayness — always turns up, without fail. Joy is not like that. Redness does not appear every time joy arises; it is only occasional. That is why Rūpa left it without an illustration.
