preṣṭhaṁ priyetaram iva pratibhāṣamāṇaṁ
priyetaram ivaas if he were the very opposite of a lover — a cold, indifferent stranger priya-itaram, 'other than a beloved'; iva = 'as if', he only seemed soप्रिय से भिन्न किसी के समान — 'इव' से; अर्थात् वे केवल ऐसे प्रतीत हो रहे थे, वस्तुतः वैसे थे नहीं
pratibhāṣamāṇaṁwho was talking back to them like that pres. middle participle, acc., qualifying preṣṭhaṁ / kṛṣṇaṁउत्तर देते हुए (कृष्ण) को — वर्तमानकालिक आत्मनेपद कृदन्त, प्रेष्ठ का विशेषण
preṣṭhaṁ — him, the dearmost; priyetaram iva pratibhāṣamāṇaṁ — who was talking back as if he were the opposite of a lover.
Kṛṣṇa, who is their dearmost, was answering them coldly — talking as though he were not their lover at all but some indifferent stranger. The 'iva', 'as if', is the point: he only seemed cold; he was still their dearmost.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of amarṣa, 'indignation', the sāttvika-mood set up by Rūpa's lead-in 'amarṣād, yathā tatraiva'; the verse is Bhāgavata 10.29.30. Rūpa's editorial adds 'na katamenāpi vyākhyātam' — no commentator has explained it here.
