L1definition
visāda-vismayāmarṣa-harṣa-bhīty-ādi-sambhavam |
visāda-vismayāmarṣa-harṣa-bhīty-ādi-sambhavamarising from despondency, astonishment, indignation, joy, fear, and the like long bahuvrīhi in the neuter, describing vaisvarya (next line) — names the sāttvika triggers that break the voiceविषाद, विस्मय, अमर्ष, हर्ष, भय आदि से जिसकी उत्पत्ति होती है — ऐसा (वैस्वर्य)
visāda-vismayāmarṣa-harṣa-bhīty-ādi-sambhavam — [that which] arises from despondency, astonishment, indignation, joy, fear, and so on
visāda-vismayāmarṣa-harṣa-bhīty-ādi-sambhavam — विषाद (खिन्नता), विस्मय, अमर्ष (असहनशीलता), हर्ष, भय आदि से जिसका उदय होता है।
This is the defining verse for the next sāttvika-bhāva. It first lists what sets it off: despondency (viṣāda), astonishment, indignation, joy, fear, and other such surges of feeling.
यह वैस्वर्य विषाद, विस्मय, अमर्ष, हर्ष और भय जैसे भावों से उत्पन्न होता है। ये ही इसके उद्दीपक कारण हैं।
Definition (lakṣaṇa) of svara-bheda, the fifth of the eight sāttvika-bhāvas being catalogued in this laharī; the udāharaṇa that follows (2.3.38) illustrates only the viṣāda-born case.
यह इस लहरी में गिनाए जा रहे आठ सात्त्विक भावों में पाँचवें स्वर-भेद का लक्षण है। इसके आगे जो उदाहरण (२.३.३८) आता है, वह केवल विषाद से उत्पन्न स्वर-भेद को ही दिखाता है।
L2definition
vaisvaryaṁ svara-bhedaḥ syād eṣa gadgadikādikṛt ||
vaisvaryaṁvaisvarya (loss of the natural voice)वैस्वर्य (स्वर का बिगड़ना)
svara-bhedaḥis svara-bheda, the breaking of the voiceस्वर-भेद (यही उसका दूसरा नाम है)
syādwould be — i.e. the two names denote one thingहोता है / कहलाता है
eṣathis [svara-bheda]यह (स्वर-भेद)
gadgadikādikṛtproduces stammering and the like -kṛt = 'making, causing'; gadgadikā-ādi = choking/stammering speech and similar effectsगद्गद वाणी (लड़खड़ाती, रुँधी हुई बोली) आदि को उत्पन्न करने वाला
eṣa vaisvaryaṁ svara-bhedaḥ syāt — this, called vaisvarya, would be svara-bheda; gadgadikādi-kṛt — [and it is] the maker of stammering and the like
vaisvaryaṁ svara-bhedaḥ syād — वैस्वर्य को स्वर-भेद कहते हैं; eṣa gadgadikādikṛt — यह गद्गद वाणी आदि को उत्पन्न करता है।
So the thing born of those feelings is svara-bheda, the breaking of the voice, also called vaisvarya. And this breaking is what produces stammering, choking speech, and similar effects.
वैस्वर्य को ही स्वर-भेद कहते हैं। यह गद्गद, रुँधी हुई वाणी आदि को उत्पन्न करता है।

vraja-rājñi rathāt puro hariṁ
vraja-rājñiO queen of Vraja (Yaśodā), the one addressed vocative; Viśvanātha names her Yaśodāहे व्रजरानी! (सम्बोधन — विश्वनाथ इन्हें यशोदा बताते हैं)
rathātfrom the chariotरथ से (पंचमी — रथ से जाते हुए)
puraḥin front / in the presence of Viśvanātha construes puraḥ with gurau (L5): 'even before the elder', not with the chariotसामने / आगे (विश्वनाथ इसे L5 के गुरु के साथ जोड़ते हैं — 'गुरुजन के सामने भी', रथ के साथ नहीं)
hariṁHari — object of the broken half-sentenceहरि (कृष्ण) को
he vraja-rājñi (yaśode) — O queen of Vraja, Yaśodā; [she babbled] rathāt hariṁ — 'Hari, from the chariot…'; puraḥ — [reading forward:] in the presence of [the elder]
he vraja-rājñi — हे व्रजरानी; rathāt hariṁ — रथ पर (जाते हुए) हरि को; puraḥ — (गुरुजन के) सामने।
The illustration opens by addressing Yaśodā, the queen of Vraja. It then quotes the start of Rādhā's broken words: 'Hari… from the chariot…'. Viśvanātha reads the stray 'in front of' with the 'elder' further down, not with the chariot.
हे व्रजरानी! कृष्ण रथ पर बैठकर जा रहे हैं। 'सामने' शब्द को विश्वनाथ आगे के गुरु से जोड़ते हैं, अर्थात् गुरुजन के समक्ष।
An udāharaṇa of svara-bheda born of viṣāda (despondency) — the first trigger listed in 2.3.37. The scene: Kṛṣṇa is leaving Vraja by chariot, and Rādhā's grief breaks her voice.
यह २.३.३७ में गिनाए गए पहले उद्दीपक विषाद (खिन्नता) से उत्पन्न स्वर-भेद का उदाहरण है। प्रसंग यह है — कृष्ण रथ पर व्रज छोड़कर जा रहे हैं, और राधा का शोक उनकी वाणी को रुँध देता है।

svayam ity ardha-viśīrṇa-jalpayā |
svayam'…himself' — the last word she manages before the sentence collapsesस्वयं (स्वयं ही — इतना ही)
iticlosing the quoted broken speech: 'thus [she said, and no more]''इति' शब्द — इस प्रकार (उद्धरण का अन्त सूचित करता हुआ)
ardha-viśīrṇa-jalpayāby her whose babble came out half-shattered instrumental bahuvrīhi describing Rādhā (the eṇadṛśā of L5) — she is the agent who 'made the friend weep'जिसकी बात आधी ही टूट गई थी — ऐसी (राधा के द्वारा)
'…hariṁ svayam' iti — '…Hari himself,' thus [she got out]; ardha-viśīrṇa-jalpayā — by her whose babbling was half-broken
svayam iti — 'स्वयं' इतना कहकर; ardha-viśīrṇa-jalpayā — जिसका कथन बीच में ही टूट-बिखर गया, ऐसी (राधा) के द्वारा।
She reaches only '…Hari… himself—' and can go no further; the sentence shatters halfway. So the verse marks her as 'the one whose babble came out half-broken.' Viśvanātha explains she was trying to say 'stop him!' but could not complete it — pure svara-bheda from grief.
राधा 'स्वयं' इतना ही कह पाई और उनकी बात बीच में ही टूट गई। यही आधी-अधूरी वाणी उनके स्वर-भेद को दिखाती है।

hriyam eṇadṛśā gurāv api
hriyamher shyness (object of 'loosening' in L6)लज्जा को
eṇadṛśāby the doe-eyed one — i.e. Rādhā instrumental, the same agent as ardha-viśīrṇa-jalpayā; Viśvanātha identifies her as Rādhāमृगनयनी (राधा) के द्वारा — वही कर्त्री जो ardha-viśīrṇa-jalpayā है
gurau apieven before an elder — api marks how improper this is locative with puraḥ (L3): 'in the presence of the guru'; the elder is Yaśodāगुरुजन के (सामने) भी — L3 के 'सामने' के साथ; यह गुरुजन यशोदा हैं
eṇadṛśā — by the doe-eyed [Rādhā]; gurau api (puraḥ) — even before an elder; hriyam — her shyness [she was loosening]
eṇadṛśā — मृगनयनी राधा के द्वारा; gurau api puraḥ — गुरुजन (यशोदा) के सामने भी; hriyam — लज्जा को।
The doe-eyed Rādhā, so overcome, loosens her modesty even in front of an elder — Yaśodā herself. The 'even' underlines it: a young girl would never normally drop her shyness before her senior. Her despondency has undone her.
मृगनयनी राधा ने गुरुजन यशोदा के सामने भी अपनी लज्जा को शिथिल कर दिया। 'सामने' शब्द इसी गुरु से जुड़ता है।
L6example
ślathayantyā kila roditā sakhī ||
ślathayantyāloosening [her shyness] — completing the instrumental description of Rādhā present participle, instrumental, agreeing with eṇadṛśāशिथिल करती हुई (के द्वारा — मृगनयनी के साथ अन्वित)
kilaindeed — the poet's soft wonder at the scene'किल' शब्द — कहते हैं कि / निश्चय ही
roditāwas made to weep causative past participle: Rādhā's state was the cause, the friend the one made to cryरुलाई गई (जिसे रोने पर विवश किया गया)
sakhīthe friend — Viśvanātha names her Lalitāसखी
hriyaṁ ślathayantyā (eṇadṛśā) — by the doe-eyed one loosening her shyness; kila sakhī roditā — indeed the friend was made to weep
hriyam ślathayantyā — लज्जा को शिथिल करती हुई (राधा) के द्वारा; sakhī roditā kila — सखी रुला दी गई, ऐसा कहते हैं।
By this whole pitiable state — the broken words, the shyness dropped before an elder — Rādhā made her own friend break down in tears. Viśvanātha identifies the friend as Lalitā. The point of the illustration: viṣāda so shattered Rādhā's voice that even watching it undid Lalitā.
लज्जा को शिथिल करती हुई राधा की उस दशा ने सखी को रुला दिया। कहते हैं, राधा की यह दशा ही सखी के रोने का कारण बनी।

vaisvaryam iti svara-bhedasya paryāyāntaram |
vaisvaryam itias for [the verse-word] 'vaisvarya''वैस्वर्यम्' यह पद
svara-bhedasyaof svara-bhedaस्वर-भेद का (जिसका)
paryāyāntaram[it is] just another synonym paryāya-antaram = 'a further synonym' — vaisvarya adds nothing new, it only re-names svara-bhedaएक और पर्याय (दूसरा नाम मात्र) — इससे नया कुछ नहीं जुड़ता
vaisvaryam iti — the word 'vaisvarya'; svara-bhedasya paryāyāntaram — is another synonym of svara-bheda
vaisvaryam iti — 'वैस्वर्य' शब्द; svara-bhedasya paryāyāntaram — स्वर-भेद का ही एक और पर्यायवाची है।
Jīva clears up the two terms in the definition: 'vaisvarya' is simply a second name for svara-bheda — one symptom, two labels.
'वैस्वर्य' शब्द स्वर-भेद का ही एक और नाम है। यह कोई नई वस्तु नहीं, केवल वही स्वर-भेद है जिसे दूसरे नाम से कहा गया।

evam anyatra api — इसी रीति से अन्य स्थलों में भी (समझना चाहिए)।
And the same holds elsewhere: where the text gives a term alongside a familiar word, take the two as naming one and the same thing.
इसी प्रकार अन्यत्र भी समझना चाहिए। जहाँ-जहाँ पारिभाषिक नाम के साथ सरल नाम आए, वहाँ दोनों को पर्यायवाची मानना चाहिए।

dvayam iti etasya — for the word 'dvayam'; vivartaya iti vākya-śeṣaḥ — 'vivartaya' is the sentence-remainder to be supplied
dvayam iti etasya — 'द्वयम्' इस पद का; vivartaya iti vākya-śeṣaḥ — 'विवर्तय' यह छूटा हुआ वाक्य-शेष जोड़ना चाहिए।
Jīva fills an ellipsis in the illustrative material: where it says 'the pair (dvayam)…', the unspoken finishing word is 'turn [them] back' (vivartaya). The reader is meant to complete the broken phrase that way.
'द्वयम्' पद के साथ 'विवर्तय' क्रिया जोड़नी पड़ती है, तब वाक्य पूरा होता है। यही वाक्य-शेष है, जिसे पाठक को स्वयं जोड़ना पड़ता है।
'dvayam' is not a word of this unit's mūla; Jīva is supplying the missing verb for an elliptical phrase in the illustration, so the half-said line reads as a complete request.
'द्वयम्' इस इकाई के मूल का शब्द नहीं है। जीव उदाहरण में आई एक अधूरी उक्ति के लिए छूटा हुआ क्रियापद जोड़ रहे हैं, जिससे वह आधी कही गई पंक्ति एक पूरी प्रार्थना के रूप में पढ़ी जा सके।

Viśvanātha assigns the parts. The one addressed is Yaśodā, queen of Vraja. The doe-eyed one is Rādhā; the friend is Lalitā. Rādhā, watching Kṛṣṇa about to leave, could only stammer 'Hari… from the chariot… himself—', wanting to say 'stop him!' but unable to get it out. In her grief she even dropped her modesty before her elder Yaśodā. And by this sight Rādhā made her friend Lalitā weep. So the broken voice here springs straight from viṣāda.
