The lakṣaṇa (definition) verse for stambha, the first sāttvika-bhāva of this laharī. L1 names its causes; L2 names how it shows.

Why call both the mental state and the bodily signs 'stambha'? Because with the sāttvikas the one thing spreads through both inside and outside, so the inner feeling and its outer sign carry the single name.

Distinguishing stambha from pralaya (a later sāttvika, 'dissolution'). In stambha the outer organs freeze but the mind keeps running on its object — like a person stunned but still inwardly gripped; in pralaya even that inner mental activity dissolves — like fainting away entirely into the object.
