L1definition
kṛṣa-sambandhibhiḥ sākṣāt kiñcid vā vyvadhānataḥ |
kṛṣṇa-sambandhibhiḥby things connected with Kṛṣṇa instrumental, qualifying bhāvaiḥ in L2 — the emotions belong to things related to Kṛṣṇaकृष्ण से सम्बन्ध रखने वाली (वस्तुओं) के द्वारा — अर्थात् जिन भावों का आश्रय कृष्ण से जुड़ी वस्तुएँ हैं (अगली पंक्ति के भावैः का विशेषण)
kiñcid vā vyavadhānataḥor through some intervening step vā = 'or'; the ablative -taḥ = 'by way of', naming the second mode alongside sākṣātअथवा किसी व्यवधान के द्वारा — साक्षात् के साथ दूसरा प्रकार बताते हुए
kṛṣṇa-sambandhibhiḥ — by things connected with Kṛṣṇa; sākṣāt — directly; kiñcid vā vyavadhānataḥ — or through some intervening step
The mind is stirred by things connected with Kṛṣṇa. This can happen in two ways: directly, or through some intervening link. This opens the definition of sattva; the emotions themselves come in the next line.
Opens the lakṣaṇa (definition) of sattva at 2.3.1; L1-L2 define sattva, L3-L4 define the sāttvika-bhāvas that spring from it.
L2definition
bhāvaiś cittam ihākrāntaṁ sattvam ity ucyate budhaiḥ ||
bhāvaiḥby the emotions instrumental of means — the agent that seizes the mind; qualified by kṛṣṇa-sambandhibhiḥ of L1भावों के द्वारा — जो चित्त को अभिभूत करते हैं (पूर्व पंक्ति के कृष्ण-सम्बन्धिभिः से विशेषित)
cittamthe mindचित्त

ākrāntamwhen it is seized, overtaken past participle, predicated of cittam — the seized state is what gets the nameआक्रान्त — जो अभिभूत, आवृत्त हो गया है (चित्त का विशेषण; यही अवस्था नाम पाती है)

iha — here; kṛṣṇa-sambandhibhiḥ bhāvaiḥ — by the emotions connected with Kṛṣṇa; ākrāntam cittam — the mind that is seized; sattvam iti — as 'sattva'; budhaiḥ ucyate — is called by the wise
When the mind is seized by these Kṛṣṇa-related emotions, the wise call that seized mind 'sattva'. So sattva here is not the guṇa; it is the mind overtaken by devotional feeling.
L3definition
sattvād asmāt samutpannā ye ye bhāvās te tu sāttvikāḥ |
asmāt sattvātfrom this sattva ablative of source — the sattva just defined is the point of originइस (अभी परिभाषित) सत्त्व से — जो इनका उद्गम है
ye ye bhāvāḥwhatever emotions correlative ye ye … te — 'whichever … those'जो-जो भाव — 'जो भी' के अर्थ में
te tu sāttvikāḥthose, in turn, are the sāttvika [emotions] tu marks the turn from defining sattva to naming its productsवे तो सात्त्विक (कहलाते हैं) — 'तु' शब्द सत्त्व की परिभाषा से मुड़कर उसके फलों के नामकरण की ओर संकेत करता है
asmāt sattvāt — from this sattva; ye ye bhāvāḥ samutpannāḥ — whatever emotions arise; te tu sāttvikāḥ — those are the sāttvika-bhāvas
Now the second definition. Whatever emotions arise from this sattva are called the sāttvika-bhāvas. They are named after their source: born of sattva, so 'sāttvika'.
L4definition
snigdhā digdhās tathā rukṣā ity amī trividhā matāḥ ||
snigdhāḥthe smoothस्निग्ध
digdhāḥthe smearedदिग्ध
tathā rukṣāḥand likewise the dryतथा रूक्ष
iti amī trividhāḥ matāḥthese are held to be of three kinds amī 'these', with matāḥ 'are considered' — closes the classificationये (सात्त्विक भाव) तीन प्रकार के माने गए हैं — इस प्रकार वर्गीकरण पूर्ण होता है
snigdhāḥ digdhāḥ tathā rukṣāḥ — smooth, smeared, and dry; iti amī — these; trividhāḥ matāḥ — are held to be threefold
The sāttvika-bhāvas are held to be of three kinds: smooth (snigdha), smeared (digdha), and dry (rukṣa). This threefold split is stated now and unpacked later in the laharī.

sattvād iti kevalād eveti bhāvaḥ |
sattvāt itithe word 'sattvāt' [from sattva] iti flags the lemma being glossed — the ablative in L3'सत्त्वात्' — यह पद (जो व्याख्या के लिए उठाया गया है; तीसरी पंक्ति की पञ्चमी)
kevalāt eva itimeans 'from that alone' eva restricts it: from sattva only, nothing else'केवल (सत्त्व) से ही' — ऐसा; 'एव' उसे सीमित करता है: केवल सत्त्व से, और किसी से नहीं
bhāvaḥthat is the senseयही तात्पर्य है
sattvāt iti — the word 'sattvāt'; kevalāt eva iti bhāvaḥ — its sense is 'from sattva alone'
Jīva reads 'from sattva' in L3 strictly: from sattva alone. The 'alone' is the whole point — an emotion counts as sāttvika only if it springs purely from that seized state, not from anything else.

buddhi-pūrvikā pravṛttiḥtheir occurrence is preceded by deliberate intent buddhi-pūrvikā = 'having intention as its precursor' — i.e. willed, not spontaneousबुद्धिपूर्वक प्रवृत्ति होती है — अर्थात् इच्छा से की जाती है, स्वतः नहीं
tataḥ ca — and so; nṛtyādīnām — of dancing etc.; sattva-utpannatve sati api — even though they do arise from sattva; pravṛttiḥ buddhi-pūrvikā — their occurrence is preceded by deliberate intent
Jīva draws out why the 'alone' matters. Take dancing and the like. Yes, they can arise from sattva. But when they occur, they occur through deliberate intent — a person chooses to dance. So they are not 'from sattva alone'.

na ativyāptiḥdoes not over-extend ativyāpti = the fault of a definition catching what it should not; na negates itअतिव्याप्ति नहीं होती — अतिव्याप्ति वह दोष है जिससे लक्षण उसे भी पकड़ ले जिसे नहीं पकड़ना चाहिए; 'न' उसका निषेध करता है
stambhādīnām tu — but for paralysis etc.; pravṛttiḥ svataḥ eva — the occurrence is spontaneous; iti — so; asya lakṣaṇasya — of this definition; nṛtyādiṣu — onto dancing etc.; na ativyāptiḥ — there is no over-extension
But paralysis (stambha) and the other sāttvika-bhāvas break out on their own, with no act of will. So Jīva concludes: read strictly as 'from sattva alone', the definition does not wrongly stretch to cover dancing. It catches only what it should.

Viśvanātha names the emotions. They are the five primary ratis — servitude, friendship, and the rest — and the seven secondary ratis — mirth, compassion, and the rest. When any of these, whether directly or through an intervening link, seizes the mind, that mind is called sattva.

Viśvanātha maps L1's two modes onto the two sets of ratis. Seized by a primary rati — that is the 'direct' mode. Seized by a secondary rati — that is the 'mediated' mode, since a secondary love reaches Kṛṣṇa through a step. That is how directness and mediation should be understood here.

Like Jīva, Viśvanātha reads 'from sattva' in L3 as 'from sattva alone'. The restriction is deliberate: only what arises purely from the seized mind counts as sāttvika.

So Viśvanātha reaches the same close as Jīva, but by a slightly different road. Dancing and the like can be produced artificially, by contrivance. Because they can be faked, they are not 'from sattva alone'. So this definition does not wrongly stretch to cover them.
