L1definition
hāsād bhinno’ṭṭahāso’yaṁ citta-vikṣepa-sambhavaḥ ||
hāsād bhinnaḥdistinct from ordinary laughter (hāsa) ablative of separation — set apart FROM hāsaहास से भिन्न — अर्थात् साधारण हास से अलग करके दिखाया गया
citta-vikṣepa-sambhavaḥarising when the mind is thrown into agitation bahuvrīhi — its source (sambhava) is the tossing of the mindजिसका उद्गम चित्त के विक्षेप (मन के उछल पड़ने) से होता है
ayam aṭṭahāsaḥ — this loud laughter; hāsāt bhinnaḥ — is distinct from ordinary laughter; citta-vikṣepa-sambhavaḥ — and arises from an agitation of the mind.
This is the lakṣaṇa of aṭṭahāsa. Loud, roaring laughter is a different thing from ordinary smiling laughter (hāsa). It breaks out when the mind is stirred up and thrown off balance.
The lakṣaṇa (definition) line for aṭṭahāsa, 'loud laughter', one of the anubhāvas catalogued in this second laharī; verse 18 (śaṅke iti) is its udāharaṇa.
L2example
śaṅke ciraṁ keśava-kiṅkarasya
śaṅkeI suspect, I fancy — the speaker's guess frames the whole picture 1st-sg verb governing the yena-clause belowमैं ऐसा समझता हूँ / मुझे ऐसी प्रतीति होती है (आगे की येन-क्रिया का शासक क्रियापद)
ciramfor a long time nowबहुत समय से / चिरकाल से
keśava-kiṅkarasyaof the servant of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) genitive — whose mind is described in L3केशव के किंकर (सेवक) का — जिसके चित्त का वर्णन L3 में है
śaṅke — I suspect that; ciram — long since; keśava-kiṅkarasya — in the servant of Keśava... [continues into L3].
The example verse opens in a bystander's voice: 'I fancy that, in this servant of Keśava, for a long time now...' The whole picture that follows is offered as the speaker's playful guess.
First line of the udāharaṇa illustrating aṭṭahāsa (verse 18). A companion of the devotee reads his booming laughter as the blossoming of a long-grown bhakti-creeper; per Jīva (s4) it is laughter that reveals contempt for the blasphemers of bhakti.
L3example
cetas taṭe bhakti-latā praphullā |
cetaḥ-taṭeon the bank of his mind locative — the riverbank where the creeper grows; the mind is imaged as a shoreचित्त-रूपी तट पर — मन को नदी का तट माना गया है, जहाँ लता उगती है
bhakti-latāthe creeper of devotion (bhakti)भक्ति-रूपी लता
cetaḥ-taṭe — on the bank of his mind; bhakti-latā — the creeper of bhakti; praphullā — has come into full flower.
On the bank of his mind the creeper of bhakti has burst into bloom. The mind is the riverbank; devotion is the flowering vine growing on it. This is the guess the speaker floated in L2.
L4example
yenādhi-tuṇḍa-sthalam aṭṭahāsa-
yenaand it is by this creeper that... instrumental relative — the blooming bhakti-latā is the cause of what followsजिस (फूली हुई भक्ति-लता) के कारण — आगे कही बात का कारण यही लता है

aṭṭahāsa-[whose flowers are] the loud laughter — [compound continues in L5]अट्टहास-रूपी (आगे के पद के साथ जुड़ता है)
yena — by which creeper; adhi-tuṇḍa-sthalam — over the region of his mouth; aṭṭahāsa-... [prasūna-puñjāḥ, L5].
And it is from this blooming creeper that, over the region of his mouth, the loud laughs come. The laughter is pictured as the creeper's flowers.
L5example
prasūna-puñjāś caṭulaṁ skhalanti ||
prasūna-puñjāḥclusters of blossoms — i.e. the bursts of laughter nominative plural, subject of skhalanti; completes aṭṭahāsa-prasūna-puñjāḥ = 'flower-clusters that are the loud laughter'पुष्पों के समूह — यहाँ अट्टहास-रूपी पुष्प-समूह; skhalanti का कर्ता
caṭulamtremulously, in a quivering shower adverbialचंचलता से / चटपट (क्रियाविशेषण)
aṭṭahāsa-prasūna-puñjāḥ — the flower-clusters that are his loud laughter; caṭulam — in a quivering shower; skhalanti — come spilling down.
The clusters of flowers — that is, the bursts of loud laughter — come spilling down in a quivering shower over his mouth. The mapping is complete: mind = riverbank, bhakti = the vine, and the booming laughs = the flowers tumbling off it. The whole image is the speaker's fond conjecture (śaṅke) about why this devotee keeps laughing so loudly.

vipakṣam prati ākṣepa-mayatayābecause it is by nature a jibe hurled at the opposing side instrumental of cause — -mayatayā gives the reason for the 'fierce' verdict that followsक्योंकि वह विपक्ष (विरोधी) के प्रति आक्षेप से भरा होता है — इसी से आगे का 'उग्र' निर्णय निकलता है
yadyapi ... sarvatra api ugraḥ eva varṇyatealthough loud laughter is described everywhere as fierce and nothing but fierce yadyapi = concessive 'although'; eva restricts to 'only fierce'; api = 'in every case'यद्यपि सर्वत्र (हर स्थान पर) उसे उग्र ही कहा जाता है — 'ही' से केवल उग्र तक सीमित
tathāpi saḥ evanevertheless that very same laughter tathāpi answers yadyapi — the turn of the argumentतथापि वही (अट्टहास) — यहीं तर्क का मोड़ आता है
sva-pakṣam prati rocamānaḥwhen it shines forth toward one's own side (favorably) present participle — the same laugh, now aimed at one's own partyअपने पक्ष के प्रति प्रसन्न/उल्लसित होता हुआ (वही हास अब स्वपक्ष की ओर मुड़ा)
tena kenacit komalatayā api varṇayitum śakyatecan be described by someone as gentle too api — 'gentle as well', not fierce onlyउस किसी के द्वारा कोमलता के साथ भी वर्णित किया जा सकता है — 'भी' से केवल उग्र नहीं, कोमल भी
vipakṣam prati ākṣepa-mayatayā — being a jibe against the enemy side; yadyapi aṭṭahāsaḥ sarvatra api ugraḥ eva varṇyate — though loud laughter is everywhere called nothing but fierce; tathāpi saḥ eva — yet that same laughter; sva-pakṣam prati rocamānaḥ — when it beams toward one's own side; tena kenacit komalatayā api varṇayitum śakyate — can be described by someone as gentle as well.
Jīva heads off a worry. True, aṭṭahāsa, being a jibe flung at the opposing camp, is described everywhere as fierce — fierce and only fierce. Even so, that very same loud laugh, when it beams toward one's own people, can be spoken of as gentle too. So a fierce anubhāva can be turned to a tender use.
The source reads 'roacamānas' and 'komatayā' — read rocamānaḥ ('shining, beaming') and komalatayā ('with gentleness'); ordinary scribal slips.

That point granted, Jīva sets up the example: some companion on the devotee's own side describes a certain devotee's loud laughter — laughter that shows his scorn for those who revile bhakti — in the verse beginning 'śaṅke'. So the fierce laugh, aimed at blasphemers, is here rendered tenderly by a friend.

Viśvanātha reads out the verse's image plainly: 'by which cause' the clusters of blossoms that are loud laughter spill down over the mouth-region — glossing adhi-tuṇḍa-sthalam as simply 'on the mouth'. Then, like Jīva, he adds: and here is the dramaturgical definition of aṭṭahāsa too.
