karṇākarṇi sakhī-janena vijane dūtī-stuti-prakriyā
karṇākarṇiheads to heads, whispering ear-to-ear avyayībhāva; both Jīva and Viśvanātha unpack it as 'ear against ear, as if waging a little war'कान-से-कान लगाकर (मानो एक-दूसरे के कान पर छोटा-सा युद्ध ही छिड़ गया हो)
sakhī-janenawith her girlfriends instrumental of company, not agent — the companions she huddles withसखी-जनों के साथ, जिनसे सटकर वे कानाफूसी करती हैं
vijaneoff in some hidden, out-of-the-way spot locative — the setting for the whisperingएकान्त स्थान में, जहाँ यह गुप्त वार्ता होती है
dūtī-stuti-prakriyāthe fine art of flattering the go-betweenदूती की स्तुति करने की प्रक्रिया
karṇākarṇi — whispering ear-to-ear; sakhī-janena — with her girlfriends; vijane — in a hidden spot; dūtī-stuti-prakriyā — the art of praising the messenger.
The go-between is reporting to Kṛṣṇa the vows the gopīs now keep — so Viśvanātha frames the whole verse as the dūtī's speech to him. First on the list: huddling ear-to-ear with their girlfriends in some secret corner, and the whole fine art of buttering up the messenger who carries their words back and forth.
An udāharaṇa of tan-mohanatā, 'the bewildering, enchanting power' of Kṛṣṇa's kaiśora (youth), illustrated at 2.1.333: his youthfulness so bewitches the Gaurī-gopīs that it acts as their guru, inducting them into a whole curriculum of love-vows (vrata). The next line's editorial tag makes the conceit explicit — 'by your kaiśora as teacher, O Kṛṣṇa, the Gaurī-gaṇa recites these vows.'

guṇanikārehearsing it all over and over Viśvanātha glosses guṇanikā = abhyāsa, drilling/repetitionगुणनिका अर्थात् बार-बार का अभ्यास, माला-जप जैसा दोहराव

niśiunder cover of night locative of timeरात के समय, जब यह प्रयाण होता है
patyuḥ — the husband's; vañcana-cāturī — cleverness at deceiving; guṇanikā — rehearsing [the lessons]; kuṇḍa-prayāṇ niśi — the night-journey to the kuṇḍa.
More items in the curriculum: the knack of slipping one past the husband, drilling the whole lesson till it is second nature, and the night-time trek out to the kuṇḍa.
The mūla reads kuṇḍa-prayāṇ ('going to the kuṇḍa'); Viśvanātha's gloss reads kuñja-prayāṇa, 'going to the grove' — a variant worth flagging, since he decodes the grove-journey rather than the kuṇḍa.

guru-vāci — to the elders' words; vādhiryaṁ — deafness; veṇu-virutau — at the flute's sound; utkarṇatā — ears pricked up; iti — such; vratān — the vows.
And the last pair, a matched joke: turning stone-deaf to every word the elders speak, while the ears shoot up straining for the least note of Kṛṣṇa's flute. Such — 'iti' — is the whole set of vows the Gaurī-gopīs now recite by heart.

Jīva adds a scope-note: this description is meant to hold uniformly across all three sub-stages of kaiśora (youth). No one phase gets special treatment — take the account as applying equally to all three.

karṇākarṇīti praṇayena visaṁvāda-prāyatvāt |
karṇākarṇi itias for the word 'karṇākarṇi''कर्णाकर्णि' यह पद
praṇayenabecause it springs from loving intimacy instrumental of cause — the reason their talk turns quarrel-likeक्योंकि प्रणय के कारण उनकी बातें झगड़े-जैसी हो उठती हैं
visaṁvāda-prāyatvātsince it is mostly [mock] squabbling ablative of cause — grounds for the 'ear-to-ear' imageविसंवाद-प्रायता के कारण — इसी से 'कान-से-कान' का रूपक बनता है
karṇākarṇi iti — [the word] 'karṇākarṇi'; praṇayena — out of loving intimacy; visaṁvāda-prāyatvāt — because it is largely [mock] quarreling.
Why 'karṇākarṇi' (ear-to-ear)? Jīva explains: because their chatter, coming out of sheer loving closeness, is mostly playful squabbling — so it looks like ear pitted against ear.

So Jīva spells out the picture: their whispering goes back and forth, ear against ear, as though a little war were being waged. That is what 'karṇākarṇi' means.

karṇākarṇi iti — the 'karṇākarṇi' verse; kṛṣṇaṁ prati — addressed to Kṛṣṇa; dūtī-vākyam — is the go-between's speech.
Viśvanātha sets the frame: this verse is spoken by the dūtī, the go-between, and it is addressed straight to Kṛṣṇa. She is the one reporting the gopīs' 'vows' to him.

Viśvanātha now construes the whole sentence: 'O Kṛṣṇa, with your own youthfulness serving as their guru, the band of Gaurī-gopīs, in the company of their girlfriends, recites these vows that begin with karṇākarṇi.' The bewitching charm of his kaiśora is itself the schoolmaster — that is the mohanatā on display.

kuñja-prayāṇe — in going to the grove; patyuḥ — the husband's; vañcana-cāturyaṁ — skill at deceiving; guṇanikā = abhyāsaḥ — guṇanikā means repetition.
Viśvanātha decodes the harder words of the second line: getting off to the grove takes skill at outwitting the husband, and 'guṇanikā' simply means abhyāsa — going over the lesson again and again. Note he reads the journey as to the grove (kuñja), where the mūla text has the kuṇḍa.
