sanātanaṁ mitram iti tasyāpy autpattikaḥ katham |
sanātanaṁ mitram'[he is] the eternal friend' — the scriptural phrase being taken up a quoted tag from Bhā.Pu. 10.12.11; sanātanam is read as qualifying mitram, 'friend', not brahman'सनातन मित्र' — यहाँ सनातन शब्द मित्र (सखा) का विशेषण है, ब्रह्म का नहीं
itiso run the words — marks the quoted phraseइस प्रकार (उद्धृत पद को दिखाने वाला 'इति')
tasya apihis too — Kṛṣṇa's own [affection], pointing to a natural bond genitive; the api ('too') is what Jīva reads as hinting at an inborn, svabhāva-relationshipउस (कृष्ण) का भी — 'भी' शब्द स्वभावसिद्ध सम्बन्ध की ओर संकेत करता है
autpattikaḥ[is] inborn, arising from his very origin — i.e. natural, not acquiredउत्पत्ति से ही रहने वाला, जन्मजात
kathamhow [is it so]? — the question the next line answersकैसे (सिद्ध होता है)?
sanātanaṁ mitram iti — from the phrase 'the eternal friend'; tasya api autpattikaḥ katham — how is even his [affection] inborn?
sanātanaṁ mitram — 'सनातन मित्र' ऐसे; iti — इस कथन से; tasya api — उस कृष्ण का भी; autpattikaḥ — जन्मजात (स्नेह); katham — कैसे (कहा जाता है)?
Scripture calls Kṛṣṇa 'the eternal friend' of the cowherds. Take 'eternal' with 'friend': the friendship itself is eternal. But how do we know his affection is inborn, native to him and not something picked up? The little word 'his too' points to a natural, built-in bond. The line raises the question; the next answers it.
'सनातन मित्र' — इस पद में सनातन शब्द मित्र का विशेषण है। तब यह प्रश्न उठता है कि इससे कृष्ण का जन्मजात स्नेह कैसे सिद्ध होता है? 'भी' शब्द स्वभाव से ही बने सम्बन्ध की ओर इशारा करता है।
The phrase 'sanātanaṁ mitram' echoes Bhā.Pu. 10.12.11 ('yan-mitraṁ ... brahma sanātanam'); this closing kārikā establishes why the Yādavas and cowherds are nitya-priya, 'eternally dear' — it is not an udāharaṇa.
'सनातन मित्र' पद भागवत १०.१२.११ ('यन्मित्रं … ब्रह्म सनातनम्') की प्रतिध्वनि है। यह समापन-कारिका यह स्थापित करती है कि यादव और गोप नित्य-प्रिय क्यों हैं — यह कोई उदाहरण नहीं है।

sneho’smāsv iti caiteṣāṁ nitya-preṣṭhatvam āgatam ||
sneho ’smāsu'[his] affection is toward us' — the cowherds' own words, a second scriptural tag asmāsu is locative, 'upon/toward us'; the cowherds speak of Kṛṣṇa's love for themहम पर स्नेह — 'हम पर' यहाँ सप्तमी में है; गोप कृष्ण के अपने प्रति स्नेह की बात कहते हैं

nitya-preṣṭhatvamtheir being eternally dearmost [to him]नित्य अत्यन्त प्रियता, सदा से परम प्रिय होना
āgatamfollows, is arrived at — is thereby establishedसिद्ध हो गया, प्राप्त हो गया
sneho ’smāsu iti ca — and from 'his affection is toward us'; eteṣāṁ nitya-preṣṭhatvam āgatam — the eternal-dearmost-ness of these follows.
sneho ’smāsu — 'हम पर स्नेह' ऐसा; iti ca — और इस वचन से; eteṣāṁ — इन गोपों का; nitya-preṣṭhatvam — नित्य परम-प्रियत्व; āgatam — सिद्ध हुआ।
A second phrase seals it: the cowherds say 'his affection rests on us.' Put the two together — his friendship is eternal, and his love is fixed on them — and it follows that these devotees are his eternally dearmost ones. Their dearness is not a passing thing; it comes with his very nature.
'हम पर उसका स्नेह है' — इस वचन से भी इन यादव-गोपों का नित्य परम-प्रिय होना सिद्ध हो जाता है।

ity ataḥ — therefore; yādava-vallavāḥ nitya-priyā kathitā — the Yādavas and cowherds are declared eternally dear.
ity ataḥ — इसीलिए; yādava-vallavāḥ — यादव और गोप; nitya-priyā — नित्य प्रिय; kathitā — कहे गए हैं।
Therefore, on this ground, the Yādavas and the cowherds are declared to be Kṛṣṇa's eternally dear ones. That is the settled conclusion of the argument.
इसी कारण यादव और गोप नित्य प्रिय कहे गए हैं।

eṣāṁ laukikavat ceṣṭā — their activity, though it looks worldly; līlā — is divine play; mura-ripoḥ iva — just like that of Mura's foe, Kṛṣṇa.
eṣāṁ — इनकी; ceṣṭā — चेष्टाएँ; laukikavat — लौकिक-सी; līlā — लीला (हैं); mura-ripoḥ iva — मुर-रिपु (कृष्ण) की भाँति।
One more point about these dear ones: their doings look exactly like ordinary human activity, but they are actually līlā, divine play — just as Kṛṣṇa's own deeds, though they look human, are all play. What seems worldly in them is of the same divine order as his.
इनकी चेष्टाएँ लौकिक-सी दिखती हैं, पर वे लीला हैं — ठीक जैसे मुर-रिपु कृष्ण की चेष्टाएँ लौकिक-सी दिखने पर भी लीला ही होती हैं।

iti arthaḥthat is the senseऐसा अर्थ है
sanātanaṁ mitram iti — the words 'eternal friend'; etādṛśa-yojanayā iti arthaḥ — mean: construed in this way [sanātana joined to mitra].
sanātanaṁ mitram iti — 'सनातन मित्र' ऐसे पद में; etādṛśa-yojanayā — इस प्रकार की शब्द-योजना से; iti arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
Jīva starts with the grammar. The phrase 'eternal friend' is to be read by joining the words this way — 'eternal' goes with 'friend.' That construal, he says, is the meaning.
'सनातन मित्र' पद में इस प्रकार की शब्द-योजना (अन्वय) से यह अर्थ निकलता है — यही तात्पर्य है।
yojanā here is the anvaya, the syntactic joining of words; Jīva insists sanātana attaches to mitra, so the friendship is what is called eternal.

Why must 'eternal' go with 'friend'? Because otherwise the word 'eternal' would be wasted. If it described brahman, it would say nothing new — brahman is eternal already, just by being full and complete. So 'eternal' must be doing fresh work: it tells us the friendship is eternal.
यदि ऐसा न मानें तो सनातन पद व्यर्थ हो जाएगा। क्योंकि ब्रह्म का नित्यत्व तो उसके पूर्णत्व से ही सिद्ध हो जाता है (अतः सनातन को ब्रह्म का विशेषण मानने से कुछ नया नहीं जुड़ता)।

Jīva grants the other side for argument's sake. Suppose you do take 'eternal' as describing brahman. Even then, its only real point is to mark the friendship as special. So either way you land in the same place: the friendship is what 'eternal' is teaching about.
और यदि सनातन को ब्रह्म का विशेषण मान भी लें, तो भी वह ब्रह्म का विशेषण मित्रता की विशेषता को दिखाने के लिए ही होगा। अतः परिणाम एक-सा ही रहता है।

manoramaṁ suvarṇam idaṁ kuṇḍalaṁ jātam iti atra — in 'this has become a lovely gold earring'; yathā kuṇḍalasya eva manoramatvaṁ sādhyam — just as it is the earring's loveliness that is meant.
manoramaṁ suvarṇam idaṁ kuṇḍalaṁ jātam iti atra — 'यह सोना मनोहर कुण्डल बना' इस वाक्य में; yathā — जैसे; kuṇḍalasya eva — कुण्डल का ही; manoramatvaṁ — मनोहरत्व; sādhyam — प्रतिपाद्य है।
Jīva gives a homely parallel. Say: 'this gold has become a lovely earring.' The word 'lovely' is not there to praise the gold in the abstract; it fixes on the earring — the earring's loveliness is the point. In the same way, in 'the eternal friend,' 'eternal' fixes on the friend: the friendship is what is being called eternal. The analogy works exactly this far — showing where the adjective lands.
'यह सोना मनोहर कुण्डल बन गया' — इस वाक्य में जैसे मनोहरता कुण्डल की ही सिद्ध की जाती है (सोने की नहीं, क्योंकि सोना तो पहले से ही मूल्यवान है)।
A dṛṣṭānta (illustrative parallel): gold = brahman's ever-present eternality; earring = the friendship; 'lovely' = 'eternal.' As 'lovely' qualifies the earring though gold is already precious, so 'eternal' qualifies the friendship though brahman is already eternal.
यह एक दृष्टान्त है — सोना = ब्रह्म का सदा-विद्यमान नित्यत्व, कुण्डल = मित्रता, 'मनोहर' = 'सनातन'। जैसे सोना पहले से मूल्यवान होने पर भी 'मनोहर' कुण्डल का विशेषण बनता है, वैसे ब्रह्म पहले से नित्य होने पर भी 'सनातन' मित्रता का विशेषण बनता है।

The same holds for the little phrase 'his too' in the verse. It quietly signals that the bond springs from Kṛṣṇa's own nature. And a bond that belongs to his eternal nature must itself be eternal. So 'his too' implies, without stating it outright, that the friendship is eternal.
उसी प्रकार 'उसका भी' इस पद से स्वभाव से बने सम्बन्ध का संकेत मिलता है, और इसी से (स्नेह की) नित्यता आक्षेप द्वारा निकल आती है।

Jīva then widens the support. Passages like Kṛṣṇa's own declaration after Govardhana — 'the cowherd community has taken shelter in me, it is my own' — should also be read into this point. They show Kṛṣṇa claiming the cowherds as his by nature, which is just the eternal, inborn bond under discussion.

Why cited: Kṛṣṇa's own words are adduced to show his natural, proprietary attachment to the Vraja cowherd community, confirming that their dearness is inborn and eternal.

Viśvanātha spells out the verse's question in the cowherds' voice: how is it that even Kṛṣṇa's love for us is inborn and natural, so deep-rooted he cannot let it go? And he gives the answer. The Lord's nature is eternal. Anything fixed by that nature is eternal as well. So the dearmost-ness that flows from his nature is itself eternal. That, he says, is the point of the line.
उस कृष्ण का भी हम पर जन्मजात, स्वाभाविक अनुराग कैसे दुस्त्यज (न छोड़ा जा सकने वाला) है? इसका उत्तर — क्योंकि भगवान् का स्वभाव नित्य है, इसलिए उस स्वभाव से सिद्ध परम-प्रियत्व भी नित्य ही सिद्ध हो जाता है। यही तात्पर्य है।
Viśvanātha glosses the mūla's autpattika ('inborn') with svābhāvika ('springing from his own nature'), and reads asmāsu as spoken by the cowherds themselves.
विश्वनाथ मूल के 'औत्पत्तिक' (जन्मजात) की व्याख्या 'स्वाभाविक' (उनके अपने स्वभाव से उठने वाला) से करते हैं, और 'अस्मासु' को स्वयं गोपों के मुख से कहा गया मानते हैं।

And the reason it would say nothing new: brahman's eternality is already settled by its being full and complete. There is no need for a separate word to state it. So 'eternal' is freed to do its real work on the friendship.
क्योंकि (ब्रह्म का नित्यत्व तो) उसके पूर्णत्व से ही सिद्ध हो जाता है।

yādavā ballavā gopāḥthe Yādavas, and the ballavas — that is, the gopas (cowherds) Viśvanātha glosses vallava (ballava) with gopa, 'cowherd', so the two words name the herdsmenयादव और वल्लव (गोप) — विश्वनाथ वल्लव (बल्लव) की व्याख्या गोप से करते हैं, अतः दोनों शब्द ग्वालों को कहते हैं
ity ataḥ — therefore; yādavā ballavā gopāḥ nitya-priyā — the Yādavas and the ballavas, that is the cowherds, are eternally dear.
ity ataḥ — इसीलिए; yādavā ballavā gopāḥ — यादव और गोप; nitya-priyā — नित्य प्रिय (हैं)।
So the conclusion stands: the Yādavas and the ballavas — 'ballava' meaning the gopas, the cowherds — are Kṛṣṇa's eternally dear ones. Viśvanātha simply glosses the verse's 'vallava' as 'cowherd' and restates the closing point.
इसी कारण यादव और गोप नित्य प्रिय हैं।
