Here begins the definition of the dhīra-śānta hero. Three marks: he is calm by nature, he puts up with hardship, and he weighs things carefully. The next line adds a fourth mark and gives the type its name.
उसका स्वभाव शान्त होता है। वह क्लेश को सह लेता है। और वह विवेकी होता है।
The lakṣaṇa-line for the dhīra-śānta nāyaka (the 'grave-and-calm' hero). The three qualities named here — śama-prakṛti, kleśa-sahana, vivecaka — plus the vinaya of L2 are the four the commentators will trace in the example verse.

An udāharaṇa of the dhīra-śānta hero defined in L1–L2. The illustrative verse (L3–L6) is in a devotee's descriptive voice, picturing Kṛṣṇa (the enemy of Kaṁsa) beside Yudhiṣṭhira.

Jīva points out that the single word 'humility' does double duty: it carries with it, by implication, the hero's endurance of the hardships that humility leads him into.

vinaya covers two of the four marks at once — the humility itself, and, implied along with it (lakṣyate), the kleśa-sahana of L1. Viśvanātha reads the same phrase the same way (s2).
'विनय' एक साथ चार लक्षणों में से दो को समेट लेता है — स्वयं विनय, और उसके साथ ही संकेत से (लक्ष्यते) L1 का क्लेश-सहन। विश्वनाथ भी इसी पद को इसी रीति से पढ़ते हैं (s2)।

Viśvanātha unpacks 'manthara-tāra': steady, unmoving eyes. Steady eyes reveal a calm nature — so this word carries the śama-prakṛti mark of L1.
