he murāre ! tvayā saha samantād anubaddha-yuddhaḥ asura-pakṣaḥ amitra-vṛndāni avibhidya bhedam akṛtvaiva mitrasya bhedaṁ kurvan amṛtaṁ prayāti |
he murāreO Murāriहे मुरारि!
tvayā sahatogether with you — against you Viśvanātha reads the instrumental tvayā as 'with you (saha)', i.e. warring against youआपके साथ — विश्वनाथ 'त्वया' तृतीया को 'आपके साथ' अर्थात् आपसे युद्ध करते हुए, ऐसा पढ़ते हैं
samantād anubaddha-yuddhaḥlocked in battle on all sidesचारों ओर से निरन्तर युद्ध ठाने हुए
asura-pakṣaḥthe demon party — his gloss on sura-vairi-pakṣaḥ supplies the plain word for 'the gods' enemies'असुरों का पक्ष — 'देवशत्रु' के लिए सीधा शब्द रख देते हैं
amitra-vṛndāni avibhidyawithout splitting the hosts of enemiesशत्रु-समूहों को न भेदते हुए
bhedam akṛtvā evamaking no breach at all — his unpacking of avibhidya eva presses the point: none whateverभेद किए बिना ही — 'ही' से जोर देते हैं कि तनिक भी भेद नहीं
mitrasya bhedaṁ kurvanyet making a breach of a friendमित्र में भेद करता हुआ
he murāre — O Murāri; asura-pakṣaḥ — the demon party; tvayā saha samantād anubaddha-yuddhaḥ — locked in battle with you on all sides; amitra-vṛndāni avibhidya bhedam akṛtvā eva — without splitting the enemy hosts, making no breach in them at all; mitrasya bhedaṁ kurvan — yet making a breach of a friend; amṛtaṁ prayāti — attains immortality.
Viśvanātha runs the sentence in order. O Murāri — the demon party, warring with you on all sides, makes no breach at all in the enemy hosts, and yet makes a breach of a friend — and so attains immortality. He lays the paradox out flat: they spare their enemies but strike a friend, and immortality is the result. The next lines ask how that can be.

atra śabda-mātreṇaiva virodho, na tv arthena |
atrahere, in this verseयहाँ (इस श्लोक में)
śabda-mātreṇa evaby the wording alone — only at the level of the words instrumental of respect; eva restricts it — the clash is verbal onlyकेवल शब्द से ही (तृतीया) — 'ही' से सीमित करते हैं कि विरोध केवल शब्दगत है
virodhaḥthe contradiction liesविरोध (है)
na tu arthenabut not in the meaning tu marks the contrast; arthena instrumental — 'in respect of sense'पर अर्थ से नहीं — 'तु' शब्द अन्तर दिखाता है, अर्थात् तात्पर्य में कोई विरोध नहीं
atra — here; śabda-mātreṇa eva virodhaḥ — the contradiction is by the wording alone; na tu arthena — but not by the meaning.
Viśvanātha answers the puzzle. The contradiction is only in the words, he says — not in the sense. On the surface it sounds absurd (spare foes, strike a friend, win nectar), but the real meaning holds no clash at all. The next line shows why.

evaṁ sati mitrasya sūryasya amṛtaṁ mokṣaḥ muktaḥ sūrya-maṇḍalaṁ bhittvā gacchatīti matānusāreṇa jñeyam ||
evaṁ satithis being so — on that footing locative absolute; 'once the clash is taken as verbal only'ऐसा होने पर (सति-सप्तमी) — 'जब विरोध केवल शब्दगत मान लिया जाए'
mitrasya sūryasya'of the friend' means 'of the sun' — Mitra is a name of the sun the śleṣa turn: mitra read as Mitra, the sun-godमित्र अर्थात् सूर्य का — श्लेष का मोड़: 'मित्र' को सूर्य-देव पढ़ा जाता है
amṛtaṁ mokṣaḥ'amṛta' means liberation (mokṣa) second śleṣa gloss: not the nectar but releaseअमृत अर्थात् मोक्ष — दूसरा श्लेष-अर्थ: अमृत नहीं, मुक्ति
muktaḥ sūrya-maṇḍalaṁ bhittvā gacchati itinamely the doctrine that 'the liberated soul goes piercing the sun-disc' this is where 'breach of the sun' comes from — the mukta's passage through the sun-orbमुक्त पुरुष सूर्य-मण्डल को भेदकर जाता है — 'सूर्य के भेद' का स्रोत यहीं है, मुक्त की सूर्य-मण्डल से गति
matānusāreṇa jñeyamis to be understood following that accepted doctrine (mata) instrumental of manner; anchors the reading in a received view, not invented ad hocइस (शास्त्रीय) मत के अनुसार समझना चाहिए (तृतीया — प्रकार) — यह अर्थ मनगढ़न्त नहीं, मान्य मत पर टिका है
evaṁ sati — this being so; mitrasya sūryasya — 'of the friend' = of the sun (Mitra); amṛtaṁ mokṣaḥ — 'amṛta' = liberation; muktaḥ sūrya-maṇḍalaṁ bhittvā gacchati iti matānusāreṇa jñeyam — it is to be understood by the doctrine that the liberated soul goes piercing the sun-disc.
Now Viśvanātha turns to the second reading and the clash dissolves. 'Friend' (mitra) is Mitra, the sun; 'amṛta' is mokṣa, liberation. So 'making a breach of the friend' means piercing the sun-disc — for, on the received doctrine, the liberated soul passes through the orb of the sun on its way to release. Read this way, the demons who fought Kṛṣṇa attain liberation by piercing the sun: no real contradiction, only the two layers of the pun. The śleṣa is the verse's whole point.
