L1definition
sac-cid-ānanda-sāndrāṅgaś cid-ānanda-ghanākṛtiḥ ||
sac-cid-ānanda-sāndra-aṅgaḥwhose body is packed dense with being, consciousness, and bliss (sat-cit-ānanda) bahuvrīhi describing Kṛṣṇa: 'he whose body is…'जिसका अंग (श्रीविग्रह) सत्, चित् और आनन्द से सान्द्र (घन, ठोस) है — ऐसा वह
cid-ānanda-ghana-ākṛtiḥwhose very form is a solid mass (ghana) of consciousness and blissजिसकी आकृति चित् और आनन्द का घन (ठोस पिण्ड) है
sac-cid-ānanda-sāndra-aṅgaḥ — his body dense-packed with sat, cit, ānanda; cid-ānanda-ghana-ākṛtiḥ — his form a solid mass of cit and ānanda.
sac-cid-ānanda-sāndra-aṅgaḥ — जिसका श्रीविग्रह सत्-चित्-आनन्द से सान्द्र है; cid-ānanda-ghana-ākṛtiḥ — जिसकी आकृति चित् और आनन्द का घन है।
Kṛṣṇa's body is packed solid with being, consciousness, and bliss. Nothing else is in it. His very shape is a dense mass of consciousness and bliss.
कृष्ण का श्रीविग्रह सत्, चित् और आनन्द से ठसाठस भरा है। उनकी आकृति स्वयं चित् और आनन्द का घनीभूत रूप है।
This states quality (54) in the list of Kṛṣṇa's excellences, sac-cid-ānanda-sāndrāṅga (per the lead-in). The commentary now takes up each word of the verse in turn: sat, cit, ānanda, sāndra, then the second compound.
यह कृष्ण के गुणों की सूची में गुण (54) — सत्-चित्-आनन्द-सान्द्राङ्ग — को कहता है। अब टीका श्लोक के प्रत्येक शब्द को क्रम से लेती है — सत्, चित्, आनन्द, सान्द्र, फिर दूसरा समास।

sarva-kāla-deśa-vyāpakatvāt, yo’yaṁ kālas tasya te’vyakta-bandhoś ceṣṭām āhuḥ ity-ādy-uktam |
sarva-kāla-deśa-vyāpakatvātbecause he pervades all time and all place ablative of reason: this is why the word 'sat' fits himक्योंकि वह समस्त काल और देश में व्यापक है — इसी कारण उसमें 'सत्' शब्द लगता है
yo'yaṁ kālas tasya te 'vyakta-bandhoḥ ceṣṭām āhuḥ'this present time they call the activity of you, the friend of the unmanifest' — proof for pervading all time'जो यह काल है, उस अव्यक्त-बन्धु (कृष्ण) की चेष्टा को वे कहते हैं'
ity-ādy-uktamso it is stated, and the rest [Bhāgavata 10.3.26]इत्यादि (इस प्रकार) कहा गया है
sarva-kāla-deśa-vyāpakatvāt — because he pervades all time and place; yo'yaṁ kālas … āhuḥ ity-ādy-uktam — as stated in 'this time they call your activity,' etc.
sarva-kāla-deśa-vyāpakatvāt — सर्व काल-देश में व्यापक होने से; yo'yaṁ kālas tasya te 'vyakta-bandhoḥ ceṣṭām āhuḥ — 'जो यह काल है उस अव्यक्त-बन्धु की चेष्टा कहते हैं'; ity-ādy-uktam — इत्यादि कहा गया है।
The word 'sat', existent, fits because Kṛṣṇa pervades all time and all place. For time: the Bhāgavata (10.3.26) says even present time is called the activity of him, the friend of the unmanifest.
'सत्' इसलिए कि कृष्ण समस्त काल और देश में व्यापक हैं। इसी को 'जो यह काल है, उस अव्यक्त-बन्धु की चेष्टा को कहते हैं' आदि वचनों में कहा गया है।

na cāntar na bahir yasya — 'जिसके न अन्तर है न बाहर'; ity-ādi ca — इत्यादि भी।
And for place: 'he for whom there is neither inside nor outside' (Bhāgavata 10.9.13), and the like. So 'sat' means all-pervading in both time and space.
'जिसके न भीतर है न बाहर' — यह और ऐसे ही अन्य वचन भी इसी को कहते हैं।
Why cited: adduced as proof that Kṛṣṇa pervades all space, grounding the word 'sat' as all-pervading existence.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह प्रमाण इसलिए दिया गया कि कृष्ण समस्त देश में व्याप्त हैं, जिससे 'सत्' शब्द सर्वव्यापी सत्ता के अर्थ में सिद्ध हो।

cid iti — the word 'cit'; sva-prakāśatvena ajaḍatvāt — because, being self-luminous, he is not inert.
cid iti — 'चित्' शब्द का यह अभिप्राय; sva-prakāśatvena — स्वयंप्रकाश होने के कारण; ajaḍatvāt — अजड़ होने से।
The word 'cit', consciousness: it fits because Kṛṣṇa is self-luminous. He shines by his own light, so he is never inert matter.
'चित्' इसलिए कि कृष्ण स्वयंप्रकाश हैं। स्वयंप्रकाश होने के कारण वे जड़ नहीं, अजड़ हैं।

tad uktaṁ — as stated; paśyato 'jasya tat-kṣaṇāt vyadṛśyanta iti — 'while the unborn watched, in that instant they became visible.'
tad uktaṁ — यह कहा गया है; paśyato 'jasya tat-kṣaṇāt vyadṛśyanta iti — 'देखते हुए अज के आगे उसी क्षण वे दृष्ट हो गए' इति।
As stated: while Brahmā, the unborn, was looking on, in that very instant the boys and calves showed themselves (Bhāgavata 10.13.46).
इसी को कहा गया है — 'देखते हुए ब्रह्मा के सामने वे उसी क्षण स्वयं प्रकट हो गए।'
Why cited: cited to show self-luminosity — they revealed themselves by their own power, illustrating 'cit' as self-manifesting.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह स्वयंप्रकाशता दिखाने के लिए उद्धृत है — वे अपने ही बल से प्रकट हुए, जिससे 'चित्' का स्वप्रकाश-स्वरूप स्पष्ट होता है।

atra hi ajasya kartṛtvādi-nirdeśād vyadṛśyanteti karma-kartṛ-prayogaḥ |
atra hifor here, in that verseयहाँ (इस वचन में) क्योंकि
ajasya kartṛtvādi-nirdeśātbecause Brahmā (aja) is the one specified as agent, and so on ablative of reasonइसलिए कि अज के कर्तृत्व आदि का निर्देश (उल्लेख) किया गया है
vyadṛśyanta itithe verb 'they were seen / showed themselves''वे दृष्ट हुए (व्यदृश्यन्त)' — यह क्रियापद
karma-kartṛ-prayogaḥis a karma-kartṛ usage — the thing seen spoken of as if it were its own agentकर्म का कर्ता के रूप में प्रयोग है
atra hi — for here; ajasya kartṛtvādi-nirdeśāt — since Brahmā is named as the agent; vyadṛśyanta iti karma-kartṛ-prayogaḥ — 'they were seen' is a karma-kartari usage.
atra hi — यहाँ क्योंकि; ajasya kartṛtvādi-nirdeśāt — अज के कर्तृत्व आदि के निर्देश से; vyadṛśyanta iti — 'व्यदृश्यन्त' यह; karma-kartṛ-prayogaḥ — कर्म-कर्तृ का प्रयोग है।
A grammar point. In that line Brahmā is named as the one doing the seeing. So 'vyadṛśyanta', 'they were seen', is a karma-kartari form — the thing seen is put as its own agent. The sense: the boys showed themselves, by their own power. That self-revealing is exactly what 'cit', self-luminous, means.
यहाँ अज (जिसे देखा जा रहा है) का ही कर्तृत्व निर्दिष्ट है, इसलिए 'व्यदृश्यन्त' में कर्म-कर्तृ का प्रयोग है।
karma-kartari-prayoga: the object of an action expressed as though it were the agent, like 'the rice cooks (itself)' — the thing cooked stands as the cooker. Here the ones seen 'get themselves seen,' i.e. reveal themselves by their own light.
कर्म-कर्तरि-प्रयोग — जहाँ क्रिया का कर्म ही मानो कर्ता के रूप में कहा जाए, जैसे 'चावल स्वयं पकता है' — जो पकाया जाता है वही पकाने वाला बन जाता है। यहाँ जो देखे जाते हैं वे ही 'स्वयं को दिखा देते हैं', अर्थात् अपने ही प्रकाश से प्रकट होते हैं।

na cakṣuṣā paśyati rūpam asya — his form is not seen by the eye; yam eva … vivṛṇute tanūṁ svām — whom he chooses, to that one the Self unveils its body; iti śruteḥ — so the śruti.
na cakṣuṣā paśyati rūpam asya — नेत्र से इसका रूप नहीं देखा जाता; yam evaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhyaḥ — जिसे यह वरता है उसी से प्राप्य; tasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanūṁ svām — उसके प्रति यह आत्मा अपना स्वरूप प्रकट करता है; iti śruteḥ — इस श्रुति से।
The śruti confirms it. His form is not seen with the eye (Śvetāśvatara 4.20). He is reached only by the one he chooses; to that person the Self unveils its own body (Kaṭha 1.2.23). He is known only by revealing himself — that is what 'cit', self-luminous, means.
'इसका रूप नेत्र से नहीं देखा जाता; जिसे यह आत्मा स्वयं वरण करता है, उसी को वह प्राप्य होता है; उसी के प्रति यह अपने स्वरूप को स्वयं प्रकट करता है' — ऐसी श्रुति है।
Why cited: scriptural proof that Kṛṣṇa is known only by his own self-revelation, not by sense-perception — grounding 'cit' as self-luminous.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह श्रुति-प्रमाण दिखाने के लिए कि कृष्ण केवल अपनी स्वयं-अभिव्यक्ति से जाने जाते हैं, इन्द्रिय-प्रत्यक्ष से नहीं — जिससे 'चित्' का स्वप्रकाश-स्वरूप सिद्ध हो।

nirupādhi-prema-āspada-sarva-aṁśatvātbecause in his every part he is the object of unconditioned love — love with no ulterior condition ablative of reason; compound: 'because he is, in all his parts, the abode of unconditioned love'इसलिए कि वह अपने समस्त अंशों में निरुपाधि (शर्तरहित) प्रेम का आस्पद (आश्रय) है
ānanda iti — the word 'ānanda'; nirupādhi-prema-āspada-sarva-aṁśatvāt — because in every part he is the object of unconditioned love.
ānanda iti — 'आनन्द' शब्द का यह अभिप्राय; nirupādhi-prema-āspada-sarva-aṁśatvāt — निरुपाधि प्रेम के आस्पद रूप में सर्व-अंशता होने से।
The word 'ānanda', bliss: it fits because Kṛṣṇa, in every limb and part, is the object of love that has no condition or ulterior motive. He is loved for himself alone — that is his bliss-nature.
'आनन्द' इसलिए कि कृष्ण अपने हर अंश में निरुपाधि प्रेम के आश्रय हैं।

tad uktaṁ — यह कहा गया है; kim etad adbhutam iva vāsudeve 'khilātmani — 'अखिलात्मा वासुदेव में यह कैसा अद्भुत सा है'।
As stated: 'What is this wonder in Vāsudeva, the Self of all?' (Bhāgavata 10.13.36) — the astonishing surge of love felt toward him.
इसी को कहा गया है — 'सबके आत्मा वासुदेव में यह कैसा मानो अद्भुत प्रेम है।'
Why cited: cited to show he is the object of spontaneous, unconditioned love — supporting 'ānanda'.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह दिखाने के लिए उद्धृत कि वे सहज, निरुपाधि प्रेम के विषय हैं — 'आनन्द' का समर्थन करता है।

iti śruteḥso runs the śrutiऐसी श्रुति होने से
ānandaṁ brahmaṇo rūpam iti śruteḥ — because the śruti says 'bliss is the form of Brahman.'
ānandaṁ brahmaṇo rūpam — आनन्द ब्रह्म का रूप है; iti śruteḥ — इस श्रुति से।
And the śruti: 'ānanda, bliss, is the form of Brahman.' So bliss is his very form, not just an attribute he happens to have.
'आनन्द ही ब्रह्म का स्वरूप है' — ऐसी श्रुति है।
Why cited: scriptural proof that bliss is Brahman's own form — grounding 'ānanda' as Kṛṣṇa's essence, not a mere quality.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह श्रुति-प्रमाण कि आनन्द ब्रह्म का अपना स्वरूप है — जिससे 'आनन्द' कृष्ण का सार सिद्ध हो, मात्र एक गुण नहीं।

sāndra iti — the word 'dense'; tad-itara-aspṛṣṭa-rūpatvāt — because his form is untouched by anything other than these.
sāndra iti — 'सान्द्र' शब्द का यह अभिप्राय; tad-itara-aspṛṣṭa-rūpatvāt — उससे इतर से अस्पृष्ट रूप होने के कारण।
The word 'sāndra', dense: it fits because his form is untouched by anything other than being, consciousness, and bliss. No foreign matter is mixed in — that is what 'dense' means here.
'सान्द्र' इसलिए कि कृष्ण का रूप अपने से भिन्न किसी भी वस्तु से अछूता है।

tat-samānārtha-sac-chabda-prayogaś cātra tat-tad-rūpatvenopalakṣitatvān na kṛtaḥ ||
tat-samāna-artha-sat-śabda-prayogaḥ caand the use of the word 'sat', which here means the same thingऔर उसके समान अर्थ वाले 'सत्' शब्द का प्रयोग
atrain this second compoundयहाँ (इस दूसरे समास में)
tat-tad-rūpatvena upalakṣitatvātbecause 'sat' is already flagged indirectly through his being of those very forms (cit and ānanda) instrumental + ablative of reason: 'because it is indicated by way of those forms'क्योंकि वह उन-उन (चित् और आनन्द) रूपों के द्वारा उपलक्षित हो जाता है — इसी कारण
na kṛtaḥwas not made — the poet did not repeat 'sat'(इसलिए 'सत्' शब्द का प्रयोग) नहीं किया गया
atra — in this second compound; tat-samāna-artha-sat-śabda-prayogaḥ — the use of the equivalent word 'sat'; tat-tad-rūpatvena upalakṣitatvāt na kṛtaḥ — was not made, since 'sat' is already indicated through those very forms.
tat-samāna-artha-sat-śabda-prayogaḥ ca — और उसके समानार्थक 'सत्' शब्द का प्रयोग; atra — यहाँ; tat-tad-rūpatvena upalakṣitatvāt — उन-उन रूपों से उपलक्षित होने के कारण; na kṛtaḥ — नहीं किया गया।
Why does the second compound say only 'cit-ānanda' and drop 'sat'? Because 'sat' means the same as what is already present, and it is silently flagged (upalakṣita) by 'cit' and 'ānanda' themselves. So Rūpa did not repeat the word 'sat'.
यहाँ (दूसरे समास में) उसी अर्थ वाले 'सत्' शब्द का प्रयोग नहीं किया गया, क्योंकि 'सत्' चित् और आनन्द रूपों के द्वारा ही उपलक्षित हो जाता है।
upalakṣaṇa: a mark that points to a thing without being part of it — like 'the house with the crow on it,' where the crow only helps you find the house. Here 'sat' is upalakṣita: pointed to by 'cit' and 'ānanda' without being spelled out, since being is inseparable from consciousness and bliss, so naming those already flags it.
