girijā — Girijā; śyāmam kaṇṭhaṁ aprekṣya — not looking closely at his dark throat [and mistaking it for Śyāma]; bhītā — frightened; rudraṁ tyajati — lets go of Rudra.
Girijā, Rudra's own wife, catches sight of his dark throat. Not looking closely, she takes the dark (śyāma) throat for Śyāma — Kṛṣṇa himself. Startled and embarrassed, she lets go of Rudra. The whole picture is set off by hearing Kṛṣṇa's fame sung (L4).
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, from Lalita-mādhava 5.18) in the vibhāva laharī: it shows Kṛṣṇa's yaśas — his glory or fame — working as an uddīpana-vibhāva, a stimulus that kindles the devotional mood. By poetic convention (kavi-samaya) fame is white and, sung by Nārada, floods the world; each figure then acts on what the whitening or the very name 'Śyāma' suggests.

Ananta, whose garment is dark-blue, looks and sees it turned white — the white fame has washed over everything. Astonished, he flings the cloth off. Viśvanātha names this dark-clad one as Ananta.

ābhīrikā utkā — the eager cowherd woman; yamī-nīram — the Yamunā's water; kṣīraṁ matvā — thinking it milk; śrapayati — sets it boiling.
A cowherd woman, all eager, looks at the water of the Yamunā — now white with the fame — takes it for milk, and puts it on to boil down. Viśvanātha spells it out: yamī-nīra means the Yamunā's water; thinking it milk, keen to reduce it as one reduces milk, she boils it.

All of this happens the moment your fame, O Dāmodara, is sung by Nārada on his vīṇā. The locative-absolute holds the whole verse together: the sung glory is the one cause, and the three marvels are its effect.

Jīva heads off a wrong reading. The 'bhītā rudram' passage is playful poetry, written to the poets' convention (fame is white, and so on). Do not take Girijā, Ananta, and the cowherd woman literally acting this way — it is sport, not fact.

So Jīva gives the real cause. What actually moves them to let go, fling off, and mistake things is nothing but hearing his fame. The absorption of hearing the glory is what drives them, not any literal whitening of the world.

Jīva records a textual variant: where the verse reads ābhīrikotkā, another manuscript reads ābhīra-rāmā — 'a cowherd wife'. A note on the received text, not a second interpretation.
pāṭhāntara = a variant reading transmitted in the manuscripts (a textual matter), distinct from a suspended yad vā, which offers a second interpretation of one settled text.

Viśvanātha unpacks the line word by word. Yamī-nīra means the Yamunā's water. The cowherd woman takes it for milk, and — keen to reduce it the way one boils milk down — she sets it boiling. He glosses utkā as utkaṇṭhitā, 'eager'.
