L1definition
sādguṇyair nirmalaiḥ khyātaḥ kīrtimān iti kīrtyate ||
sādguṇyair nirmalaiḥbecause of his spotless good qualities instrumental of means — the ground on which one becomes knownअपने निर्मल सद्गुणों के कारण — क्योंकि उसके गुण दोषरहित हैं, इन्हीं के द्वारा वह प्रसिद्ध होता है
khyātaḥone who is widely known, renownedजो (सर्वत्र) विख्यात है
kīrtimān itias 'kīrtimān', the glorious one'कीर्तिमान्' इस नाम से
kīrtyateso he is proclaimed, is calledकहा जाता है (कर्मवाच्य — उसकी ऐसी संज्ञा की जाती है)
khyātaḥ — one who is renowned; sādguṇyaiḥ nirmalaiḥ — through spotless good qualities; kīrtimān iti — as 'kīrtimān'; kīrtyate — is proclaimed.
One who is widely known for spotless good qualities is called kīrtimān, 'the glorious one.' This is the lakṣaṇa, the defining line of the quality.
The definition of kīrtimān, the forty-third of Kṛṣṇa's qualities (the '(43)' in the lead-in); the illustrative verse follows under yathā.

tvad-yaśaḥ — your fame [is] kumuda-bandhu — the moon, friend of the night-lily; kaumudī — [and its] moonlight.
Your fame is a moon — the friend that opens the night-lily — and its light is moonlight.
An udāharaṇa of kīrtimān, the forty-third quality (2.1); a gopī addresses Kṛṣṇa, marveling at the paradox his fame produced.

abhitaḥ — on every side; śubhra-bhāvam — to a white state; nayanti — it brings [the worlds]; api — although.
That moonlight should be turning the whole world white on every side.

kṛṣṇa-bhāva-kalilaṁ jagat-trayam ||
kṛṣṇa-bhāva-kalilampervaded with kṛṣṇa-bhāva — 'blackness' on the surface, 'love for Kṛṣṇa' underneath the pivot-śleṣa: kṛṣṇa = the color black, and Kṛṣṇa; bhāva = state/color, and loving moodकृष्ण-भाव से व्याप्त — यहाँ श्लेष का धुरी-स्थल: 'कृष्ण' अर्थात् काला रंग, और स्वयं कृष्ण; 'भाव' अर्थात् अवस्था/रंग, और प्रेममय भाव
jagat-trayam — the three worlds; kṛṣṇa-bhāva-kalilam — pervaded with kṛṣṇa-bhāva.
—the three worlds kṛṣṇa-colored, black? Moonlight should whiten, yet your fame darkened all three worlds — an apparent contradiction. The whole verse turns on the pun kṛṣṇa-bhāva: on the surface 'blackness', but underneath 'love for Kṛṣṇa'.
The headline pun: kṛṣṇa-bhāva reads both as 'the color black' (kṛṣṇa = black) and as 'the mood/love for Kṛṣṇa'. The literal reading gives the paradox; the second reading resolves it — Viśvanātha draws both out below.

yathā anantaram evajust as in the immediately preceding qualityजैसा कि ठीक आगे (अगले श्लोक में ही)
sādguṇyair nirmalaiḥ khyātaḥ kīrtimān iti atrahere, in the line 'renowned for spotless good qualities, kīrtimān''सद्गुण्यैर्निर्मलैः ख्यातः कीर्तिमान्' इस (परिभाषा) में
sādguṇya-khyātiḥ eva kīrtiḥ iti pratipadyateit is established that fame is precisely the being-known-for-good-qualities eva restricts: kīrti = the renown itself, not what one is renowned forसद्गुणों की ख्याति ही 'कीर्ति' है — ऐसा प्रतिपादित होता है ('एव' सीमित करता है: कीर्ति स्वयं ख्याति है, वह वस्तु नहीं जिसकी ख्याति हो)
na tu sādguṇya-mātram tadvatbut not the mere good qualities themselves taken as such tu marks the contrast Jīva is pressing — quality vs. the renown of the qualityकेवल सद्गुण (स्वयं) कीर्ति नहीं है — 'तु' यहाँ जीव का बल दिया हुआ भेद दिखाता है: गुण और गुण की ख्याति में अन्तर है
yathā anantaram eva — just as just before; atra — here in 'sādguṇyaiḥ … khyātaḥ kīrtimān'; sādguṇya-khyātiḥ eva kīrtiḥ iti pratipadyate — it is settled that fame is the renown-for-good-qualities; na tu — and not; sādguṇya-mātram tadvat — mere good qualities as such.
Jīva sharpens the definition. Here, as in the quality just before, 'renowned for spotless good qualities' establishes that kīrti is the being-famous-for-those-qualities — the renown itself. It is not the good qualities on their own. Fame is the renown of the virtues, not the virtues.

Viśvanātha walks through the image. Your fame is the moon, friend of the night-lily; its light is moonlight; abhitaḥ means everywhere. Though that moonlight brightens the three worlds white on every side, how did it make them 'kṛṣṇa-bhāva'? By the force of a pun, kṛṣṇa-bhāva here reads as 'pervaded with the color black,' and kalila means pervaded. Moonlight should whiten, yet it blackened the worlds — Viśvanātha names this figure virodhābhāsa, an apparent contradiction.
Viśvanātha spells out the śleṣa (śabda-cchala): the surface reading of kṛṣṇa-bhāva is Kṛṣṇa's black color, which is what generates the seeming paradox against 'whitening' moonlight.
s2conclusion
vastutaḥ kṛṣṇa-viṣayaka-bhāva-bhaktyā kalilam ||
vastutaḥin reality — beneath the pun's surfaceवस्तुतः, यथार्थ में
kṛṣṇa-viṣayaka-bhāva-bhaktyāby loving devotion (bhāva-bhakti) directed toward Kṛṣṇa instrumental — this, not black color, is what actually pervaded the worldsकृष्ण-विषयक भाव-भक्ति के द्वारा — यही, न कि काला रंग, वस्तुतः लोकों को व्याप्त करने वाली है
kalilam[the three worlds are] pervadedव्याप्त (कर दिया)
vastutaḥ — in reality; kṛṣṇa-viṣayaka-bhāva-bhaktyā — by loving devotion aimed at Kṛṣṇa; kalilam — pervaded.
But really — Viśvanātha resolves the paradox — the worlds were flooded not with black color but with bhāva-bhakti, loving devotion aimed at Kṛṣṇa. That is the true sense of the pun: your fame did brighten the three worlds, and the 'blackness' is love for Kṛṣṇa. So the contradiction dissolves.
