sauśīlya-saumya-carito dakṣiṇaḥ kīrtyate budhaiḥ ||

āviṣkaroti piśuneṣv api nābhyasūyāṁ

sauśīlya-saumya-caritaḥ — जिसका चरित्र सुशील और सौम्य हो; dakṣiṇaḥ — वह दक्षिण नायक; kīrtyate budhaiḥ — ऐसा विद्वान् वर्णन करते हैं।
The wise call him dakṣiṇa — the 'gracious' hero — the one whose conduct is soft and gentle because his very nature is good.
जिसका स्वभाव सुशील और कोमल हो, उसे विद्वान् 'दक्षिण' नायक कहते हैं। यही इस भेद का लक्षण है।
The lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of the dakṣiṇa hero, the type now being defined (lead-in '(34) dakṣiṇaḥ—'); the illustrating verse follows under 'yathā—'.

वह अपने सेवक के बड़े अपराधों को भी नहीं देखता। 'भी' शब्द बताता है कि छोटे तो दूर, गम्भीर अपराध भी वह अनदेखा कर देता है।
The udāharaṇa (illustration) of the dakṣiṇa hero defined in L1. Both Jīva and Viśvanātha identify it as the wording of Śrīmad-Uddhava's message sent to Akrūra, who had gone to Kāśī with the Syamantaka jewel — so the hero portrayed is Kṛṣṇa.
यह L1 में परिभाषित दक्षिण नायक का उदाहरण है। जीव और विश्वनाथ दोनों इसे श्रीमद्-उद्धव के उस सन्देश के शब्द मानते हैं, जो स्यमन्तक मणि लेकर काशी गए अक्रूर के प्रति भेजा गया — अतः यहाँ चित्रित नायक कृष्ण हैं।

bahudhā abhyupaitihe acknowledges and repays many times overअनेक प्रकार से (बहुत बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर) स्वीकार करता है
manāk api kṛtāṁ sevāṁ — service rendered even slightly; bahudhā abhyupaiti — he acknowledges manifold.
manāk api kṛtāṁ sevāṁ — थोड़ी-सी भी की हुई सेवा को; bahudhā abhyupaiti — अनेक रूपों में स्वीकार करता है।
Even the tiniest bit of service done for him, he rewards many times over.
किसी ने ज़रा-सी भी सेवा की हो, तो वह उसे बहुत बड़ा मानकर अनेक प्रकार से स्वीकार करता है।

Jīva unpacks the compound of L1: sauśīlya means a good disposition, and saumya conduct means very gentle conduct; the hero who has such conduct is the one intended.
जीव कहते हैं — 'सौशील्य' का अर्थ है उत्तम स्वभाव, और 'सौम्य चरित्र' का अर्थ है अत्यन्त कोमल आचरण। जिसका ऐसा चरित्र हो, वही दक्षिण है।

Jīva sets the scene: these words are Śrīmad-Uddhava's written message sent to Akrūra, who had carried off the Syamantaka jewel to Kāśī.

varṇa-dūta, literally a 'messenger made of written syllables', i.e. a letter; Viśvanātha renders the same as patrī, 'a letter'.
'वर्ण-दूत' का शब्दार्थ है 'लिखे हुए अक्षरों से बना दूत', अर्थात् पत्र; विश्वनाथ इसी को 'पत्री' अर्थात् पत्र कहते हैं।
