karuṇaḥis [called] karuṇa, the compassionateकरुण (करुणामय) कहलाता है
saḥheवही (पुरुष)
nigadyateis named, is spoken ofकहा जाता है — कर्मवाच्य
yaḥ tu para-duḥkha-asahaḥ — the one who cannot bear others' suffering; saḥ karuṇaḥ nigadyate — he is called karuṇa.
The one who cannot stand to watch others suffer — he is called karuṇa, the compassionate. This line is the definition (lakṣaṇa); the verse that follows illustrates it.
The lakṣaṇa of karuṇa, the compassionate character-type, item (32) in this laharī; the following stanza (L2–L5) is its udāharaṇa.

magadha-indra-kārā-the prison of Magadha's lord (Jarāsandha) — compound runs on into L3 (kārā-duḥkha…)
rājñām — of the kings; magadha-indra-kārā-duḥkha-andhakāra-paṭalaiḥ agādha-gatibhiḥ — by the thick, unfathomable coverings of the darkness that is the suffering in the prison of Magadha's lord…
Now Bhīṣma's stanza. Think of the kings whom Jarāsandha, lord of Magadha, had thrown into prison. Their suffering there was a thick darkness, its workings too deep to measure.
An udāharaṇa of karuṇa, 'the compassionate', defined just above at 2.1.132. Per Jīva and Viśvanātha these are Śrī Bhīṣma's words spoken at the hour of his passing.

duḥkha-andhakāra-paṭalaiḥ svayam andhitānām [rājñām] — of the kings blinded, by that very darkness, by the thick coverings of the darkness of their suffering.
That darkness of suffering had itself left the kings blinded. So they sat in Jarāsandha's dungeon, sightless in their misery.

yaḥ ghṛṇī — he who, compassionate; [rājñām] akṣīṇi sukha-mayāni vyatānīt — spread the eyes of the kings wide with joy.
He who is compassionate spread those same eyes wide open, now full of joy. The blinded eyes of the prisoners he opened, as the sun opens closed lotuses at dawn.
ghṛṇī is glossed 'compassionate' on Amara's authority (see Jīva s3); the same darkness/eyes imagery sets up the sun-śleṣa of L5.

tam yadu-nandana-padma-bandhum — him, the lotus-friend who is the delight of the Yadus; adya vande — today I praise.
Him I praise today — the delight of the Yadus, the friend of the lotus. Here is the śleṣa the verse turns on: 'friend of the lotus' is a name of the sun, which opens lotuses at dawn and drives off darkness. Kṛṣṇa is that sun for the imprisoned kings: he drove off the darkness of their suffering and opened their eyes, as the sun opens lotuses. So Bhīṣma praises Kṛṣṇa as the very sun of the Yadu line.

rājñām iti — the verse 'rājñām…'; niryāṇa-samaye śrī-bhīṣma-vacanam — is Śrī Bhīṣma's utterance at the hour of his passing.
Jīva sets the scene: the stanza beginning 'rājñām' is spoken by Śrī Bhīṣma as he lay dying.

svayam iti karma-kartṛtva-dyotakam |
karma-kartṛtva-dyotakamsignals the reflexive construction, where the object is treated as its own agent karma-kartṛ: the acted-upon (the blinded kings) is grammatically made the agent of the blindingकर्म के कर्तृत्व को द्योतित करता है — अर्थात् कर्म ही कर्ता बन जाता है
svayam iti — the word 'svayam'; karma-kartṛtva-dyotakam — signals the karma-kartṛ construction.
Jīva notes the grammar: the word 'svayam' ('of itself') marks the karma-kartṛ construction — the kings, who are really the ones acted upon, are spoken of as though they blinded themselves.
karma-kartā: a construction in which the logical object is put as the grammatical agent — the deed happens 'of its own accord' upon the sufferer, e.g. 'the pot cooks itself'.

jugupsā-karuṇe ghṛṇe — 'ghṛṇā means disgust and compassion'; iti amaraḥ — so the Amara-koṣa.
Jīva cites the Amara-koṣa: the word ghṛṇā carries two senses, disgust and compassion. So ghṛṇī in the verse is to be taken as 'the compassionate one', not 'the one who feels disgust'.
Why cited: Lexical proof from the Amara-koṣa that ghṛṇī here means 'compassionate' (karuṇa), fixing the verse's word to the quality being illustrated.

Viśvanātha construes the whole verse. The kings, unfathomable in their ways, were marked/afflicted of themselves by the massed darkness that was the misery of Jarāsandha's prison. 'svayam' marks the reflexive construction. The compassionate one spread their eyes wide with joy. Him — the sun, friend of the lotus, whose very form is Kṛṣṇa the delight of the Yadus — I praise. Viśvanātha spells out the śleṣa: padma-bandhu is the sun, and that sun is Kṛṣṇa.
Where the mūla reads andhitānām 'blinded', Viśvanātha's gloss gives aṅkitānām 'marked'; his construe is kept as he wrote it and not harmonized with the printed line.
