The hero (śūra) is the one who is full of drive in battle and expert in wielding weapons. Two marks: fire for the fight, and skill with arms.
The lakṣaṇa (definition) of śūra, 'the hero', quality #31 of the nāyaka in the vibhāva laharī; the lead-in reads '(31) śūraḥ—'. The udāharaṇa illustrating it follows in the next four lines.

pṛthu-samara-saraḥ — the lake that is the vast battle: vigāhya — having plunged in, kurvan — performing [the sport named in the next line].
You plunge into the lake that is the vast battle and there you sport. The battlefield is pictured as a lake, and Kṛṣṇa as an elephant diving in — the whole verse runs on that one image.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, in the poet's voice to Kṛṣṇa) of śūra, 'the hero', quality #31, defined in the preceding line 2.1.129 as one full of drive in battle and expert with weapons. The lead-in 'tatra ādyo, yathā—' marks this as illustrating the first (ādya) type. The four lines are one sustained metaphor: battle = lake, enemies = lotus-forest, arms = trunk, Kṛṣṇa = the lord of elephants at play.

dviṣad-aravinda-vane — in the lotus-forest that is your enemies: vihāra-caryām [kurvan] — [performing] your roaming sport.
The sport you perform is in the lotus-forest that is your enemies. An elephant wading through a bed of lotuses — that is Kṛṣṇa moving through the ranks of foes.

You shine forth, your restless rod-like arms serving as the elephant's trunk. The picture is complete: a long swinging trunk is just his sweeping arms.

O destroyer of Agha, you are at play like the king of elephants. The address names a real conquest (the demon Agha), sealing the metaphor: this elephant's 'play' is the slaughter of foes.

udāharaṇa-vaicitrya-artham — to vary the illustration: ekasya eva śūrasya — of the one same hero, dvidhā nirūpaṇam — a two-fold description.
So Jīva explains why the hero gets described twice: it is to vary the illustration. One and the same hero is set out in two ways — not two different heroes.

The same principle, applied as fits each case, holds for the treatment that follows. Jīva is telling us to read the later heroes the same way.

Jīva flags a textual variant. Where the received text reads 'dviṣad-aravinda-vane', another manuscript reads 'avirala-śaivala-gām', and Jīva judges that reading the fitting one. It keeps the lake-picture going — an elephant moving through dense water-moss.
pāṭhāntara = a variant manuscript reading. Jīva does not decode the main text here; he registers and endorses an alternate. 'avirala-śaivala-gām' = 'going amid unbroken (avirala) water-moss (śaivala)', which sustains the lake imagery; the received reading 'dviṣad-aravinda-vane' names the enemies-as-lotuses instead. The two readings are left standing side by side.

mahā-yuddhaḥmeans a great warमहायुद्ध है
pṛthu-samaraḥ — 'the vast battle': mahā-yuddhaḥ — [it] means a great war.
Viśvanātha unpacks 'pṛthu-samara' as a great war.
Source prints 'māhā-yuddhaḥ'; the word is mahā-yuddha, 'great war'.

And that same great war is what the verse calls the lake. Viśvanātha spells out the metaphor's first term: battle = lake.

Viśvanātha construes the sentence: having plunged into that lake, and performing your sport in the lotus-forest of enemies — which he glosses as the forest of lotuses that are your foes — you shine forth. He is naming the metaphor's second term: enemies = lotuses.

So, O destroyer of Agha, on all this you have the play of the elephant-king. Viśvanātha closes the image with gajendra ('lord of elephants'), the same figure the verse calls vāraṇendra.
gajendra = 'lord of elephants', Viśvanātha's word for the verse's vāraṇendra; both name the elephant whose 'play' the whole udāharaṇa builds.
