L1definition
kurvan kārayate dharmaṁ yaḥ sa dhārmika ucyate ||
kurvandoing [dharma] himselfस्वयं धर्म करता हुआ
kārayateand getting [others] to do it causative — the second act built into the definitionऔर दूसरों से भी कराता है
dharmamdharma, righteousness (the object of both acts)धर्म को
yaḥthe one whoजो (पुरुष)
saḥheवह
dhārmikaḥ ucyateis called a dhārmika, a 'righteous man'धार्मिक कहलाता है
yaḥ — the one who; dharmam — dharma; kurvan — doing himself; kārayate — and causing [others] to do; saḥ — he; dhārmikaḥ ucyate — is called a dhārmika.
kurvan — स्वयं करता हुआ; kārayate — और कराता है; dharmam — धर्म को; yaḥ — जो; saḥ — वह; dhārmikaḥ ucyate — धार्मिक कहलाता है
He who both practices dharma himself and gets others to practice it is called a dhārmika, a righteous man. That is the whole definition: two acts — doing, and causing to do.
जो स्वयं धर्म करता है और दूसरों से भी धर्म कराता है, वही धार्मिक कहलाता है। परिभाषा में दो क्रियाएँ हैं — करना और कराना।
The lakṣaṇa (definition) of dhārmikaḥ, the 30th quality in the list of Kṛṣṇa's qualities; the following verse (yathā—) is its udāharaṇa.
यह धार्मिक का लक्षण है — कृष्ण के गुणों की सूची में तीसवाँ गुण। आगे का श्लोक ('यथा—' से) इसका उदाहरण है।

pādaiś caturbhir bhavatā vṛṣasya
pādaiḥ caturbhiḥby its four feet instrumental of means; śleṣa — the bull's four legs / dharma's four quarters (tapas, śauca, dayā, satya)चार चरणों के द्वारा (श्लेष — बैल के चार पैर / धर्म के चार पाद: तप, शौच, दया, सत्य)
bhavatāby you [O Kṛṣṇa] instrumental agent of the passive abhyavardhiआपके द्वारा
vṛṣasyaof the bull — and, by śleṣa, of dharma genitive; dharma is pictured as a four-legged bullवृष (बैल) का — यहाँ धर्म चार पैरों वाले बैल के रूप में कल्पित है
bhavatā — by you; vṛṣasya — of the bull (= dharma); pādaiḥ caturbhiḥ — by its four feet; [tathā abhyavardhi — was so nourished].
pādaiḥ caturbhiḥ — चार चरणों से; bhavatā — आपके द्वारा; vṛṣasya — वृष का
Nārada teases Kṛṣṇa: the bull — which is dharma — was fed by you on its four feet. The pun rides on vṛṣa, 'bull,' being dharma's standard image, whose four legs are its four quarters.
आपने वृष के चार पैरों से — यहाँ श्लेष है। एक ओर बैल के चार पैर, दूसरी ओर धर्मरूपी वृष के चार पाद (तप, शौच, दया, सत्य)। सारे श्लोक में यही श्लेष चलता है।
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of dhārmikaḥ, quality 30; spoken as Śrī Nārada's playful words (narma-vacana) to Kṛṣṇa. The śleṣa runs through the whole verse.
यह धार्मिक (तीसवाँ गुण) का उदाहरण-श्लोक है, जो श्री नारद के विनोदपूर्ण नर्म-वचन के रूप में कृष्ण से कहा गया है। श्लेष पूरे श्लोक में चलता है।

gopendra — O gopendra; guptasya [vṛṣasya] — of the protected bull; tathā abhyavardhi — there was such a nourishing.
guptasya — रक्षित का; gopendra — हे गोपेन्द्र; tathā — उसी प्रकार; abhyavardhi — पोषण हुआ
O gopendra — the bull, guarded by you, was made to thrive so thoroughly. 'gopendra' is a pun: lord of the cowherds, and lord who protects the earth (a king).
हे गोपेन्द्र, आपके द्वारा रक्षित उस वृष का उसी प्रकार पोषण हुआ। 'गोपेन्द्र' शब्द श्लिष्ट है — गोप का अर्थ गौओं का पालक और पृथ्वी का पालक दोनों।

svairam — स्वच्छन्दता से; carann eva — विचरता हुआ ही; yathā — और (च के अर्थ में); trilokyām — तीनों लोकों में
So freely does it now roam through the three worlds, unchecked, that — (leading into the next line) it devours all it meets.
स्वच्छन्दता से तीनों लोकों में विचरता हुआ ही। यहाँ 'यथा' को टीकाकार 'च' अर्थात् 'और' के अर्थ में लेते हैं।

adharma-sparśāṇi — अधर्म-स्पर्श वाली वस्तुओं को; haṭhāt — बलपूर्वक; jaghāsa — खा गया
It forcibly ate up everything tainted by adharma. Nārada's joke: you fed dharma so well that the bull grew fat and strong enough to graze down all unrighteousness — the reverse of how dharma usually fares.
अधर्म के स्पर्श वाली वस्तुओं को उसने बलपूर्वक खा डाला। वृष के रूपक में बैल जो चरता है, वही धर्मरूपक में अधर्म का नाश है।

Jīva: in 'yathā vā', the vā does not mean 'or' — here it carries the sense of ca, 'and'.

gopendra iti — 'गोपेन्द्र' यह; śliṣṭaḥ — श्लिष्ट है
Jīva: 'gopendra' is a śleṣa — it means both lord of the cowherds and (as he explains next) protector of the earth, a king.
'गोपेन्द्र' शब्द श्लिष्ट है — इसमें श्लेष है।

gām pṛthivīm pāti iti — 'he protects the earth'; gopaḥ — [so he is] a gopa.
gām pṛthivīm — गौ अर्थात् पृथ्वी की; pāti iti — रक्षा करता है इसलिए; gopaḥ — गोप
Jīva gives the second sense by etymology: go here means 'the earth,' pā means 'protect' — so gopa = one who protects the earth, i.e. a king.
जो गौ अर्थात् पृथ्वी की रक्षा करता है, वह गोप कहलाता है।

gopaḥ bhūpaḥ iti — 'gopa = king'; amara-nānārtha-vargaḥ — [says] the Amara-kośa's nānārtha section.
gopaḥ bhūpaḥ iti — 'गोपः भूपः' ऐसा; amara-nānārtha-vargaḥ — अमरकोश का नानार्थ-वर्ग
Jīva backs the second sense from the dictionary: the Amara-kośa, in its list of words with several meanings, gives 'gopa = king.'
'गोप का अर्थ भूप (राजा) भी है' — ऐसा अमरकोश का नानार्थ-वर्ग कहता है।
Why cited: Cited from the Amara-kośa's nānārtha (multiple-meaning) section to establish that gopa can mean 'king,' grounding the pun in gopendra.
क्यों उद्धृत: अमरकोश के नानार्थ (अनेकार्थ) खण्ड से यह प्रमाण दिया गया है कि 'गोप' का अर्थ 'राजा' भी हो सकता है, जिससे गोपेन्द्र का श्लेष आधार पाता है।

Viśvanātha: so that this bull, roaming the three worlds, devoured the crops and grasses of unrighteousness. He reads the verse's 'adharma-sparśāṇi' as grasses that are adharma, which the fattened bull of dharma grazes down; and glosses jaghāsa by the plainer bubhuje, 'ate.'
जैसे यह वृष तीनों लोकों में विचरता हुआ अधर्मरूपी शस्य और अधर्मरूपी तृण को खा गया — अर्थात् भोग कर गया।
Viśvanātha's verse text here reads adharma-rūpa-śasyāni / śampāṇi where the mūla line L5 has adharma-sparśāṇi; he is unpacking that phrase as 'grasses of adharma,' not reporting a different reading of the base word.
विश्वनाथ का यहाँ श्लोक-पाठ 'अधर्म-रूप-शस्यानि / शम्पानि' है, जबकि मूल पंक्ति L5 में 'अधर्म-स्पर्शानि' है; वे इसी पद को 'अधर्म की घास' के रूप में खोल रहे हैं, न कि मूल शब्द का कोई भिन्न पाठ बता रहे हैं।
