L1example
sa-helam ākhaṇḍala-pāṇḍu-putrau
sa-helamplayfully, as sport adverbial accusative — sa- 'with' + hela 'sport'लीलापूर्वक, खेल-खेल में ('स' अर्थात् सहित + हेला अर्थात् क्रीड़ा)
ākhaṇḍala-pāṇḍu-putrauĀkhaṇḍala (Indra) and the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna) — the two of them dvandva in the dual, accusative object of vidhāya; ākhaṇḍala is a stock name for Indraइन्द्र और पाण्डुपुत्र (अर्जुन) — इन दोनों को (द्विवचन, विधाय का कर्म; आखण्डल इन्द्र का रूढ़ नाम है)
sa-helam — playfully; ākhaṇḍala-pāṇḍu-putrau — Indra and the son of Pāṇḍu (both, in the dual)
sa-helam — लीलापूर्वक; ākhaṇḍala-pāṇḍu-putrau — इन्द्र और पाण्डुपुत्र दोनों को
Playfully he handled the two — Indra and Arjuna, the son of Pāṇḍu. The verse is built as a double reading (śleṣa): every word will answer at once to Indra's story and to Arjuna's.
कृष्ण ने लीलापूर्वक इन्द्र और पाण्डुपुत्र (अर्जुन) — इन दोनों को (जैसा अगली पंक्ति में कहा जाएगा, वैसा) बना दिया।
An udāharaṇa of sudṛḍha-vratatā, Kṛṣṇa's firmness in keeping his vow — the guṇa defined at 2.1.94 (pratijñā-niyamau yasya satyau sa sudṛḍha-vrataḥ), here a quality that kindles rasa (uddīpana-vibhāva). This is the second example ('yathā vā').

vidhāya kaṁsārir apārijātau |
vidhāyahaving made [them into] gerund; takes the dual object of L1 plus the predicate apārijātauबना कर (पूर्वकालिक क्रिया; इसका कर्म पूर्व-पंक्ति का द्विवचन तथा विधेय 'अपारिजात' है)
kaṁsārirKṛṣṇa — the enemy of Kaṁsa (the subject of the whole verse) nominativeकंस के शत्रु अर्थात् कृष्ण ने (कर्ता)
apārijātauthe two 'a-pārijāta' ones — read one way, robbed of the pārijāta tree; read the other way, rid of enemy hosts dual accusative predicate; the śleṣa word Jīva and Viśvanātha split by pakṣa'अपारिजात' — दोनों को ऐसा बना कर (द्विवचन विधेय; यही वह श्लेष-पद है जिसे जीव और विश्वनाथ पक्ष-भेद से अलग-अलग खोलते हैं)
kaṁsārir — Kṛṣṇa, the foe of Kaṁsa; ākhaṇḍala-pāṇḍu-putrau apārijātau vidhāya — having made the two, Indra and Arjuna, 'apārijāta'
kaṁsārir — कंसारि कृष्ण ने; ākhaṇḍala-pāṇḍu-putrau — इन्द्र और अर्जुन को; apārijātau vidhāya — 'अपारिजात' बना कर
Kṛṣṇa, the slayer of Kaṁsa, made the two of them apārijāta. On Indra's side that means he left Indra without his pārijāta tree, having carried it off. On Arjuna's side it means he left the son of Pāṇḍu with his crowd of enemies gone. One word, both stories at once.
कंस के शत्रु कृष्ण ने इन्द्र और अर्जुन दोनों को 'अपारिजात' बना दिया। ('अपारिजात' पद यहाँ श्लेष है, जिसका अर्थ आगे टीका में खुलता है।)
L3example
nija-pratijñāṁ saphalāṁ dadhānaḥ
nija-pratijñāṁhis own vow accusative object of dadhānaḥअपनी प्रतिज्ञा को (धारण करने का कर्म)
saphalāṁinto a fruitful one, made good predicate accusative agreeing with pratijñāmसफल (प्रतिज्ञा के साथ अन्वित विधेय — अर्थात् प्रतिज्ञा को सफल करते हुए)
dadhānaḥmaking it so, bringing it to bear present participle, nominative, of Kṛṣṇaधारण करते हुए (वर्तमान कृदन्त, कृष्ण के लिए, कर्ता)
nija-pratijñāṁ saphalāṁ dadhānaḥ — making his own vow bear fruit
nija-pratijñāṁ — अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को; saphalāṁ dadhānaḥ — सफल करते हुए
And in doing it he made his own vow come true. This is the line that ties the example to the quality being illustrated — Kṛṣṇa keeps his word.
अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को सफल करते हुए कृष्ण ने (यह सब किया)।

satyāṁ ca kṛṣṇāṁ ca sukhām akārṣīt ||
satyāṁ caand Satyā (Satyabhāmā), one figure; 'and' accusative; Viśvanātha reads satyā = Satyabhāmāऔर सत्या को (कर्म; विश्वनाथ इसे सत्या अर्थात् सत्यभामा पढ़ते हैं)
kṛṣṇāṁ caand Kṛṣṇā (the dark-hued one — the second figure); 'and' accusativeऔर कृष्णा को (कर्म)
sukhāmhappy — glossed as 'endowed with happiness' (an adjective agreeing with the two women) feminine accusative; the atypical form is what both commentators pause to justifyसुखी (स्त्रीलिंग कर्म; यही असामान्य रूप है जिसे दोनों टीकाकार रुककर सिद्ध करते हैं)
akārṣīthe made [them] aorist, 3rd sg., of Kṛṣṇaकर दिया (लुङ् / अद्यतन-भूत, अन्यपुरुष एकवचन, कृष्ण के लिए)
satyāṁ ca kṛṣṇāṁ ca sukhām akārṣīt — and he made Satyā and Kṛṣṇā happy
satyāṁ ca kṛṣṇāṁ ca — सत्या और कृष्णा दोनों को; sukhām akārṣīt — सुखी कर दिया
And he made Satyā and Kṛṣṇā happy. The two names carry the double reading through to the end: fetching the pārijāta pleased Satyabhāmā, and freeing the field of enemies pleased Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), the Pāṇḍavas' queen. The single Kṛṣṇa satisfies both sides at once by keeping his vow.
और उसने सत्या तथा कृष्णा दोनों को सुखी कर दिया।

apārijātatvaṁthe state of being 'apārijāta' nominative, the term to be glossed'अपारिजातत्व' — यही वह पद है जिसकी व्याख्या करनी है
pārijāta-rāhityammeans being without the pārijāta tree nominative gloss equating the twoपारिजात का न रहना, अर्थात् पारिजात वृक्ष से रहित होना (यही उपर्युक्त पद का अर्थ)
indra-pakṣe — on Indra's side; apārijātatvaṁ — being apārijāta; pārijāta-rāhityam — is the absence of the pārijāta tree
indra-pakṣe — इन्द्र-पक्ष में; apārijātatvaṁ — 'अपारिजात' होना; pārijāta-rāhityam — पारिजात से रहित होना
Jīva takes the first reading. On Indra's side, calling Indra apārijāta means: without the pārijāta tree — because Kṛṣṇa took it from him.
इन्द्र-पक्ष में 'अपारिजातत्व' का अर्थ है — पारिजात वृक्ष से रहित हो जाना। (कृष्ण ने इन्द्र से पारिजात हर लिया।)

pāṇḍava-pakṣeon the Pāṇḍava's side of the reading locative of the second alternativeपाण्डव-पक्ष में अर्थात् जहाँ यह अर्जुन-विषयक है (सप्तमी — दूसरा विकल्प)
apagata-śatru-samūhatvammeans the state of having one's crowd of enemies driven off nominative gloss; apagata 'gone away' + śatru-samūha 'host of foes'शत्रु-समूह का दूर हो जाना (अपगत अर्थात् दूर हुआ + शत्रु-समूह; यही 'अपारिजात' का दूसरा अर्थ)

pāṇḍava-pakṣe — पाण्डव-पक्ष में; apagata-śatru-samūhatvam — शत्रु-समूह का दूर हो जाना
On the Pāṇḍava's side the same word means: the son of Pāṇḍu whose crowd of enemies is gone. So Jīva unfolds the śleṣa word both ways — Indra loses the tree, Arjuna loses his foes.
पाण्डव-पक्ष में उसी पद का अर्थ है — शत्रुओं का समूह दूर हो जाना। (कृष्ण ने अर्जुन के शत्रुओं को हटा दिया।)

ity amara-koṣātso runs the Amara-koṣa — therefore on its authority ablative of source; iti closes the quoteऐसा अमरकोश से (सिद्ध होता है) (पञ्चमी — प्रमाण-स्रोत; 'इति' उद्धरण को समाप्त करता है)
atha ... ity amara-koṣāt — since the Amara-koṣa says 'pāpa, puṇya, sukha and the rest take all three genders when denoting a substance'
atha … sukhādi ca — 'तीनों लिंगों में पाप, पुण्य, सुख आदि'; ity amara-koṣāt — ऐसा अमरकोश से
He cites the Amara-koṣa: words like pāpa, puṇya and sukha are used in all three genders when they qualify a thing. So sukha can take a feminine form and agree with the two women — sukhām, 'happy'.
अमरकोश कहता है कि 'पाप, पुण्य, सुख' आदि शब्द तीनों लिंगों में तथा द्रव्य-अर्थ में प्रयुक्त होते हैं। (अतः 'सुख' का स्त्रीलिंग-रूप 'सुखा' सिद्ध हो जाता है।)
Why cited: Amara-koṣa authority that sukha functions as a three-gender adjective, licensing the feminine sukhām agreeing with Satyā and Kṛṣṇā.
क्यों उद्धृत: अमरकोश का यह प्रमाण दिखाता है कि 'सुख' शब्द तीनों लिंगों वाला विशेषण भी है — इसी से सत्या और कृष्णा के साथ अन्वित स्त्रीलिंग-रूप 'सुखाम्' उचित ठहरता है।

sukham aham asvāpsam ity-ādau triyāmāyāṁ tulyādhikaraṇatvād dharmi-paratvenāpi sukha-śabdasya dṛṣṭatvāt |
sukham aham asvāpsam ity-ādauin usages such as 'I slept happy' locative 'in cases like'; a stock example sentence"मैं सुखपूर्वक सोया" इत्यादि (प्रयोगों) में (सप्तमी — 'जैसे इन स्थलों में'; एक प्रसिद्ध उदाहरण-वाक्य)
triyāmāyāṁas with the word 'night' (triyāmā, feminine) locative; the co-referent noun the example turns on'त्रियामा' (रात्रि) के साथ (सप्तमी — वह समानाधिकरण पद जिस पर उदाहरण घूमता है)
tulyādhikaraṇatvādbecause sukha there stands in the same grammatical agreement [with its noun] ablative of cause; samānādhikaraṇa = shared case-and-referentक्योंकि वहाँ समानाधिकरण है — अर्थात् एक ही विभक्ति और एक ही अधिकरण होने के कारण (पञ्चमी — हेतु)
dharmi-paratvena apias also denoting the thing that bears the quality, not just the bare quality instrumental; api = 'even, also' — extending sukha beyond an abstract nounधर्मी (द्रव्य) का बोध कराने के रूप में भी ('अपि' अर्थात् केवल भाववाचक अर्थ ही नहीं, अपितु द्रव्यपरक अर्थ में भी)
sukha-śabdasya dṛṣṭatvātbecause the word sukha is actually attested [used this way] ablative of cause completing the reasonक्योंकि 'सुख' शब्द (इस प्रकार) प्रयुक्त देखा गया है (पञ्चमी — हेतु की पूर्ति)
sukham aham asvāpsam ity-ādau — in cases like 'I slept happy'; triyāmāyāṁ tulyādhikaraṇatvāt — because it agrees with the noun (night); dharmi-paratvena api sukha-śabdasya dṛṣṭatvāt — because sukha is seen denoting the thing qualified as well
sukham aham asvāpsam ity-ādau — 'मैं सुखपूर्वक सोया' आदि में; triyāmāyāṁ tulyādhikaraṇatvāt — 'त्रियामा' के साथ समानाधिकरण होने से; dharmi-paratvena api sukha-śabdasya dṛṣṭatvāt — 'सुख' शब्द का द्रव्यपरक रूप में भी दर्शन होने से
And he backs it with usage. In a phrase like 'sukham aham asvāpsam' — 'I slept happy' — the word sukha stands in agreement with its noun (as with 'night'), qualifying the thing itself and not merely naming an abstract 'happiness'. Since sukha is actually seen used that way, reading sukhām as 'happy' agreeing with the two women is sound.
"मैं सुखपूर्वक सोया" जैसे प्रयोगों में 'सुख' शब्द 'त्रियामा' (रात्रि) के साथ समानाधिकरण में आता है। इससे सिद्ध है कि 'सुख' शब्द केवल भाववाचक नहीं, अपितु धर्मी (द्रव्य) का बोध कराने वाला विशेषण-रूप में भी प्रयुक्त होता है।
