L1definition
sadyo nava-navollekhi-jñānaṁ syāt pratibhānvitaḥ ||
sadyaḥon the spot, then and thereतत्काल, उसी क्षण
nava-nava-ullekhistriking off ever-new turns of expression -ullekhin, 'sketching/expressing', qualifies jñānamजो नित नये-नये उन्मेष (उक्ति) प्रकट करता है — जो ज्ञान का विशेषण है
jñānaman intelligence, a flash of insightबुद्धि, ज्ञान
syātis, would beहोता है
pratibhā-anvitaḥthe one 'endowed with pratibhā (ready wit)' — the term being defined bahuvrīhi in the nominative; the lakṣaṇa names its subjectप्रतिभा से युक्त (पुरुष) — यही इस लक्षण का विशेष्य है
pratibhā-anvitaḥ — the man endowed with ready wit; [tasya] jñānam — whose intelligence; sadyaḥ — on the spot; nava-nava-ullekhi — keeps striking off ever-new expressions; syāt — is such.
sadyaḥ — तत्काल; nava-nava-ullekhi — नित नये-नये उन्मेष वाला; jñānam — जो ज्ञान (हो); syāt — वह हो; pratibhā-anvitaḥ — तो वह प्रतिभा से युक्त कहलाता है।
This defines pratibhā, ready wit. The man who has it produces, on the spot, an intelligence that keeps throwing up ever-new turns. So 'one endowed with pratibhā' is the man whose mind answers instantly and always freshly.
जिसमें उसी क्षण नित नये-नये भाव और उक्तियाँ स्फुरित करने वाली बुद्धि हो, वह प्रतिभा से युक्त कहलाता है। यही प्रतिभा नामक गुण का लक्षण है।
Lakṣaṇa of pratibhā ('ready wit'), one of the guṇas catalogued in this laharī; the four lines that follow (L2–L5) are its udāharaṇa, quoted from Padyāvalī 283.
यह प्रतिभा (हाजिरजवाबी) का लक्षण है — इसी लहरी में गिनाये गये गुणों में से एक। आगे की चार पंक्तियाँ (L2–L5) इसका उदाहरण हैं, जो पद्यावली २८३ से उद्धृत हैं।

vāsaḥ samprati keśava kva bhavato mugdhekṣaṇe nanv idaṁ
vāsaḥyour vāsa — the pun-word: dwelling / garment / fragrance the śleṣa pivot of the whole verse; here Rādhā means 'dwelling'वास — यहाँ राधा का अभिप्राय है 'निवास-स्थान'; यही समस्त श्लोक का श्लेष-मूल है
sampratinow, just nowइस समय, अभी
keśavaO Keśava (Rādhā addressing him)हे केशव!
kvawhere isकहाँ है?
bhavataḥyourआपका
mugdha-īkṣaṇeO bewitching-eyed one (now Kṛṣṇa answers, addressing Rādhā) vocative feminine — the speaker flips to Kṛṣṇa mid-lineहे मुग्ध नयन वाली! (सम्बोधन स्त्रीलिंग में — यहाँ वक्ता पलटकर कृष्ण बन जाता है)
nanuwhy, surelyअरे, यह तो
idamthis — [here it is]यह (सामने) है
keśava — O Keśava; samprati — now; bhavataḥ — your; vāsaḥ — dwelling; kva — where? // mugdha-īkṣaṇe — O bewitching-eyed one; nanu idam — why, this here [is it].
keśava — हे केशव; samprati — इस समय; bhavataḥ vāsaḥ — आपका निवास; kva — कहाँ है (राधा का प्रश्न); mugdha-īkṣaṇe — हे मुग्धनयने; nanu idam — अरे, यह तो सामने ही है (कृष्ण का उत्तर)।
Rādhā: 'Keśava, where is your vāsa — your home — now?' Kṛṣṇa hears vāsa in a second sense, as 'garment', and shoots back: 'O bewitching-eyed one, why — this is it,' pointing to what he is wearing. Viśvanātha supplies that Kṛṣṇa means his yellow cloth (pītāmbaram).
राधा पूछती हैं — 'हे केशव! इस समय आपका वास (निवास) कहाँ है?' और कृष्ण उसी 'वास' शब्द को दूसरे अर्थ में सुनकर उत्तर देते हैं — 'हे मुग्धनयने! यह तो सामने ही है।'
Opening of the udāharaṇa (Padyāvalī 283) illustrating pratibhā, ready wit: to every barb of Rādhā's, Kṛṣṇa instantly hears her pun-word in a second sense and answers on that. The word vāsa carries three senses across the verse — dwelling, garment, fragrance.
यह प्रतिभा (हाजिरजवाबी) को दर्शाने वाले उदाहरण (पद्यावली २८३) का आरम्भ है — राधा के हर व्यंग्य-बाण पर कृष्ण तुरन्त उनके श्लेष-शब्द को दूसरे अर्थ में सुनकर उसी पर उत्तर दे देते हैं। 'वास' शब्द इस श्लोक में तीन अर्थ धारण करता है — निवास, वस्त्र और सुगन्ध।

vāsaṁ brūhi śaṭha prakāma-subhage tvad-gātra-saṁsargataḥ |
vāsaṁ brūhitell me your vāsa (dwelling)! — Rādhā pressing againवास (वस्त्र) की बात कहो
śaṭhaO rogue (Rādhā to Kṛṣṇa)हे धूर्त!
prakāma-subhageO you who are beautiful as one could wish (now Kṛṣṇa answers, addressing Rādhā) vocative feminine — speaker flips to Kṛṣṇaहे अत्यन्त सौभाग्यवती! (सम्बोधन स्त्रीलिंग में — वक्ता पलटकर कृष्ण बन जाता है)
tvad-gātra-saṁsargataḥbecause it comes from touching your body ablative of source — the -taḥ carries 'from / because of'तुम्हारे शरीर के संसर्ग के कारण — '-तः' प्रत्यय 'से / के कारण' का भाव देता है
śaṭha — O rogue; vāsaṁ brūhi — tell me your dwelling! // prakāma-subhage — O you beautiful as one could wish; tvad-gātra-saṁsargataḥ — [my vāsa comes] from touching your body.
śaṭha — हे धूर्त; vāsaṁ brūhi — वास (वस्त्र) की बात कहो (राधा); prakāma-subhage — हे परम सौभाग्यवती; tvad-gātra-saṁsargataḥ — तुम्हारे अंग के संसर्ग के कारण (कृष्ण का उत्तर आरम्भ)।
Rādhā, not satisfied: 'Tell me the vāsa, you rogue!' Kṛṣṇa now hears vāsa in yet a third sense, as 'fragrance': 'O beautiful one, my fragrance comes only from touching your body.' Viśvanātha spells out that here vāsa = sugandha, fragrance.
राधा कहती हैं — 'हे धूर्त! अब वास (वस्त्र) की बात करो।' कृष्ण उसी शब्द को तीसरे अर्थ (सुगन्ध) में लेकर कहते हैं — 'हे परम सौभाग्यवती! तुम्हारे अंग के संसर्ग से ही…'
The line runs into the next: the reply-phrase 'my fragrance is from touching your body' is completed in Viśvanātha's gloss at s3.
यह पंक्ति अगली पंक्ति में चली जाती है — उत्तर-वाक्य 'मेरी सुगन्ध तुम्हारे शरीर के स्पर्श से है' विश्वनाथ की व्याख्या में s3 पर पूरा होता है।

yāminyām uṣitaḥ kva dhūrta vitanur muṣṇāti kiṁ yāminī
yāminyām uṣitaḥ kvawhere did you spend the night (yāminyām, locative 'in the night')? — Rādhāरात में कहाँ ठहरे थे? (यामिन्याम् सप्तमी — 'रात्रि में')
dhūrtaO cheat (Rādhā to Kṛṣṇa)हे धूर्त!
vitanuḥbodiless (now Kṛṣṇa's retort begins) Kṛṣṇa re-reads yāminyām as yāminyā, instrumental 'by Yāminī', a woman — so the night has no body to do the deedजिसका शरीर न हो, अशरीरी — (कृष्ण यामिन्याम् को यामिन्या, तृतीया 'यामिनी के द्वारा' अर्थात् एक स्त्री, पढ़ लेते हैं, अतः रात्रि का कोई शरीर ही नहीं जो चोरी करे)
muṣṇāti kiṁdoes she [really] steal / carry off?क्या चुराती है?
yāminīthe night — heard by Kṛṣṇa as a woman named Yāminīयामिनी (रात्रि)
dhūrta — O cheat; yāminyām uṣitaḥ kva — where did you pass the night? // vitanuḥ yāminī — the bodiless Yāminī / night; māṁ — me; kiṁ muṣṇāti — does she then steal away?
dhūrta — हे धूर्त; yāminyām uṣitaḥ kva — रात में कहाँ ठहरे थे (राधा); vitanuḥ yāminī — अशरीरी यामिनी; kiṁ muṣṇāti — क्या चुरा सकती है (कृष्ण का उत्तर)।
Rādhā: 'Where did you spend the night (yāminyām), you cheat?' Kṛṣṇa twists yāminyā into 'by a woman Yāminī' and retorts: 'The night is bodiless — how could a bodiless Yāminī steal me away?' Viśvanātha notes he takes yāminyā as an instrumental ('by Yāminī'), and glosses the bodiless night that cannot carry anyone off.
राधा पूछती हैं — 'हे धूर्त! रात में कहाँ ठहरे थे?' कृष्ण 'यामिन्याम्' को 'यामिन्या' (यामिनी नाम की स्त्री के द्वारा) सुनकर कहते हैं — 'जिसका शरीर ही नहीं, वह यामिनी भला क्या चुरा सकती है?'
The pun turns on hearing the locative yāminyām ('in the night') as the instrumental yāminyā ('by Yāminī'); Viśvanātha makes the grammatical re-parsing explicit at s4.
श्लेष सप्तमी 'यामिन्याम्' (रात्रि में) को तृतीया 'यामिन्या' (यामिनी के द्वारा) सुनने पर टिका है; विश्वनाथ इस व्याकरणगत पुनःपाठ को s4 पर स्पष्ट करते हैं।

The benediction that closes the verse: 'May Śauri — Kṛṣṇa — who teases the cowherd woman with wordplays of just this kind, protect you all.' The whole exchange is the poet's example of Kṛṣṇa's ready wit.

The āśīr (pātu vaḥ) that rounds off the udāharaṇa; 'chalaiḥ evaṁvidhaiḥ' points back to the three puns just played out.
यह आशीर्वचन (पातु वः) उदाहरण को समाप्त करता है; 'छलैः एवंविधैः' अभी-अभी खेले गये तीनों श्लेषों की ओर संकेत करता है।

Viśvanātha frames the verse as a running exchange between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. Rādhā's line, he says, means: 'Keśava, where is your vāsa — your home?' Kṛṣṇa deliberately hears vāsa as 'garment' and answers: 'O bewitching-eyed Rādhā, this — my yellow cloth.' This is the first of the puns.
विश्वनाथ बताते हैं कि यहाँ राधा और कृष्ण का प्रश्नोत्तर है। राधा पूछती हैं — 'हे केशव! आपका वास, अर्थात् निवास-स्थान कहाँ है?' कृष्ण 'वास' शब्द के वस्त्र-अर्थ को पकड़कर उत्तर देते हैं — 'हे मुग्धनयने राधे! यह पीताम्बर ही तो है।'

Viśvanātha: this time Kṛṣṇa hears vāsa as 'fragrance' and replies, 'O lovely one, my scent comes only from touching your body.' The one word vāsa has now served him as dwelling, garment, and fragrance in turn.
कृष्ण 'वास' शब्द के तीसरे अर्थ (सुगन्ध) को पकड़कर प्रत्युत्तर देते हैं — 'हे मनचाही सौभाग्यवती! मेरी यह सुगन्ध तो तुम्हारे ही अंग के संसर्ग से है, और किसी कारण से नहीं।'

yāminyā iti tṛtīyā-anta-padam abhipretya āhataking 'yāminyā' as a word ending in the third case (instrumental), he says the pun is grammatical — reading the locative yāminyām as the instrumental yāminyā, 'by Yāminī' (a woman)'यामिन्या' — यह तृतीयान्त पद अभिप्रेत करके कहते हैं; अर्थात् सप्तमी 'यामिन्याम्' को तृतीया 'यामिन्या' (यामिनी नाम की स्त्री के द्वारा) पढ़ लेते हैं

Viśvanātha spells out the last pun, which turns on grammar. Rādhā's 'yāminyām' is a locative, 'in the night' — 'Where did you spend the night, you cheat?' Kṛṣṇa hears it as the instrumental 'yāminyā', 'by Yāminī', as if a woman: 'The night has no body — how could a bodiless Yāminī steal me away?'
