The wise say splendor (tejas) is of two kinds: dhāma and prabhāva. This line defines the two heads; the next lines take up the first, dhāma.
This is the lakṣaṇa-line: tejas, the fourth of the qualities being treated (see the lead-in 'tejasā yuktaḥ'), is split into dhāma (radiance) and prabhāva (power). dhāma is defined and illustrated in the lines that follow.

dhāma — dhāma; dīpti-rāśiḥ — a mass of light; bhavet — is.
Dhāma is a concentrated mass of light. That is the first of the two kinds of splendor.

marīci-kulaiḥ — with its floods of rays; ambara-maṇi-nikurambam — the host of suns; viḍambayan api — even while outshining.
This king of jewels floods out such rays that it mocks and outshines the whole crowd of suns in the sky. Grant it that much — that is the 'even while' set up here; the point turns in the next line.
An udāharaṇa illustrating dhāma, 'a mass of light' (defined in L2), the first kind of tejas of L1. The illustrative verse is in a devotee's descriptive voice.

ayam maṇirāṭ — this king of jewels; ruci-niviḍe hari-vakṣasi — on Hari's radiance-packed chest; uḍuḥ iva — like a star; sphurati — shines.
Yet set that same jewel on Hari's chest, which is already dense with luster, and it shows up like nothing more than a little star. The suns it outshone; against Hari's own glow it is a speck. That contrast is the whole point of the example.

ambara iti — [the verse] beginning 'ambara-'.

Jīva picks up the verse by its opening word, 'ambara-', to begin his comment on it.

yad api etat eva tattvam — though this alone is true; tathā api — still; śrī-bhagavān — Bhagavān; laukika-līlā-rakṣaṇa-artham — to guard his worldly pastimes; svasya tasya ca tejo-gopanam api karoti — hides the splendor of himself and of the jewel too; iti — hence; tatra — there; sūrya-ādi-tejasām api bhāṇam — the sun's and others' splendor too shining; jñeyam — is to be understood.
Jīva answers a worry. If the jewel really outshines every sun, why isn't the world blinded? Because, though that is the truth, Bhagavān hides the splendor — his own and the jewel's — so his human-like pastimes can go on. That is why, in that setting, the sun and the other lights are still seen to shine at all.

Jīva backs the concealment with Kṛṣṇa's own words in the Gītā: he is not shown to all, being veiled by yogamāyā.
Why cited: Gītā 7.25, cited as scriptural proof that Bhagavān deliberately hides himself — so his splendor and the jewel's can be concealed to protect the human-like pastimes.

kaustubha-maṇiḥ uḍuḥ iva iti vā pāṭhaḥ — 'kaustubha-maṇiḥ uḍur iva' is another reading.
Jīva notes a textual variant: some copies read 'the Kaustubha jewel, like a star' in place of 'maṇirāṭ ayam uḍur iva'. He records it without choosing between them.
The variant spells out openly that the maṇirāṭ ('king of jewels') is the Kaustubha, which the received reading leaves implicit.

ayam maṇi-rāṭ — this king of jewels; kaustubhaḥ — is the Kaustubha.
Viśvanātha identifies the jewel: the 'king of jewels' in the verse is the Kaustubha on Kṛṣṇa's chest.

Viśvanātha unpacks the verse's words: 'sky-jewel' is the sun, and 'nikuramba' is a whole crowd of them. So the point is: though the jewel's rays outshine a crowd of suns, on Kṛṣṇa's chest it shows up like just a star.
